"Lots of Rolling Hills and Nice Ocean Views" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

If you like rolling hills and no flats, with inclines/declines lasting about three miles at a stretch, then this is your race.
The ocean views keep it visually interesting, as there is little else in the way of supporting crowds or music.
It's definately a small race, with part of the road reserved for runners and the rest for regular traffic. The police held cars at intersections, and their horns blaring weren't meant to encourage the runners.
For hill climbers that don't like crowds, this is a race to consider.

I love smaller races. Overall I was very happy with this one. It was definitely a very challenging course for me - lots of rolling hills. My complaints would be that there were definitely not enough port-a-potties, traffic got very close in many areas, minimal crowd support, and no timers at the mile splits. I would definitely recommend this marathon to those who want a fairly challenging and beautiful course.

After LA I wanted to try a smaller marathon. I was very pleased with this event. The organization was perfect; every volunteer was enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful. Although I bettered my LA time by nearly 10 minutes, I found this course to be far more challenging. As tough as the hills were, the views and the ride down were well worth the effort. We ran through some pretty nice neighborhoods and all the folks there were friendly, if still somewhat sleepy! I'll definitely run this race again.

"A true challenge" (General Comments)

Perfect day for a long run. This was my first time running Palos Verdes. My friend had warned me that this was a hilly course, but easier than the Big Sur Marathon of just a few weeks earlier. He lied! This run had a very challenging 'never ending hill' near the end. Other than that, for a small marathon, things went great. Very few spectators. But the few I passed were very enthusiastic. The organizers did a very good job. Only complaints... Gatorade was mixed too thin or over saturated. When I finished (4:02) I found no water until I searched around and saw a stash under a palm tree. Other than those minor mishaps, I managed to have a fun time. I would recommend to give this one a try.

"Great Run" (about: 2002)

I ran the marathon - first time for this race. Very nice course - the hills were a challenge but not too tough. Great time of year to run near the ocean - weather was relatively cool. Plenty of water stations - need more porta-potties.

Few toilets, much traffic, time yourself.

"Tough but scenic course - well supported." (about: 2002)

I've run this marathon 4 times. The course is beautiful with ocean views and fabulous homes, but is quite challenging with several long hills, the last from miles 21-23. The support and volunteers are the best I've seen for a small race. The organizers do a great job getting the local community involved. Don't expect any spectators other than the volunteers at the water stations and a few seagulls and pelicans. Start and finish location is right on the ocean at Point Fermin Park, what a great spot! The Palos Verdes Amateur Radio Club does a great job providing communications and keeping track of the runners.

"Great local half marathon" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I did the 1/2 marathon and everything came together just right for a PR. The weather was perfect--high 50s and misty/drizzly the entire race. There are some hills but the big one in mile 2 wasn't too bad. I think the hill just before the 1/2 marathon turnaround was steeper, but wasn't as long. Since it's an out-and-back course you get to run the same hills downhill on the way back. The course was beautiful, spending most of it at on the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean. There was water at every mile and Gatorade every other mile and free GU at a couple of the aid stations. And lots of goodies at the finish line! At $25 registration, the price was certainly right. Overall, it was very well organized. I will definitely do this one again next year.

Only complaint is that there were no porta-potties on the course (at least not for the half marathon). We did find one public porta-potty around mile 6 which was nasty.

"Beautiful small marathon but watch out for hills!!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

As a flatland trained midwesterner the hills were excruciating, especially the 2 mile uphill around mile 20. Regardless, the smell of ocean air and wild mustard along with the views makes it worthwhile. The crowds were small but so were the number of entrants. Those who were out were enthusiastic. My two minor complaints: by the time the marathoners were on the return of this out-and-back some of the aid stations had run out of Gatorade. Also, GU at mile 23 does no good...try it a little earlier in the race next year.

"Great views, challenging, and fun." (General Comments)

How could you design an unattractive course in PV? Very nice course, I didn't even mind running up the big hill at around mile 3 because you get to go down it...I gave organization a 3 because there were not enough porta-potties, lotsa people were in line when the gun went off...I myself opted to hold it the entire 13.1 miles (I only did the half). Otherwise, organization was good. I rated spectators 4 because they were few and far between but the ones who were there were awesome, a couple even had cow bells. Would recommend this for a training run, or for locals. Also, the aid stations were nice...they even had GU.
