"I really enjoyed running this hometown marathon." (about: 2013)

I ran this race in it's first year in 2013 and am so glad I did. You get a good mix of roads and even a few miles of a soft trail. The volunteers were amazing and so many locals came out and cheered me on - that was amazing. There were a good number of water stops and even some great policemen and firemen! You get a nice medal from a very organized crew. I'm really happy I ran this one. This is a great race for locals and marathon maniacs alike.

Fun, well-organized race on a very flat course. The course was very well marked and there were plenty of aid stations, with many wonderful volunteers. The spectators were incredibly supportive and high energy. The only reason I gave the spectators a 4/5 is because there were not a lot of them on the course (relative to some big races), but those who were there were awesome. This was my 94th marathon and now one of my favorites. The race director was kind enough to re-open registration for those of us who were not able to run in the Towpath (due to gov shutdown). He was very prompt with responses to email and phone inquiries. I highly recommend this race and will definitely run it again.

Very pleased with the race. You would never know it was a first-time event.

"Effort was there, but course was not enjoyable" (about: 2013)

We originally had signed up for another nearby marathon (Towpath) that was scheduled to take place the same day. About one week out, we were informed that Towpath was being rescheduled to due to Government shutdown. Northern Ohio opened up additional spots to accommodate those runners who had planned to run Towpath, which was admirable considering the close proximity time-wise.

The good: The willingness of Northern Ohio to accommodate last minute entrants (Many runners I spoke to had entered last minute as we did).

The bad:
1. The course had a 1.5 mile stretch around mile 17 that took you on a loose gravel/stone trail. I was wearing running flats so the stones gnawed into my feet, not to mention the feeling that I was running on ice. I increased my effort greatly to get through this stretch and my pace never recovered as I was spent once I returned to the pavement.

2. Course poorly marked: There was a 'down and back' stretch along the beach which was not marked and had NO volunteers directing runners. I only knew I was going the right direction as I could see the backside of the signs for the 'back' portion of the 'down and back'. There were stretches of cones placed either on the shoulder of the road, or right down the middle. Cars were actually travelling in both directions along the road even in sections where cones were placed down the middle of the road.

3. Lack of restrooms at start: There were only 14 Port-o-potties situated at the start/finish line. With 1200 runners present between the marathon, half marathon, and 5K (not too mention spectators), at least 30 restrooms should have been present as all the runners head to the bathrooms for their last potty break 15-20 minutes before race-time.

4. Lack of bathrooms along route: There were 4 bathrooms stations along the entire 26.2 mile course. Each location had exactly one port-o-potty, which was completely inadequate.

5. No hose water, please: As I was near the front of the pack, I was taking water from the aid stations that was initially served. It was very apparent that I was drinking old water that had sat in a garden hose. If it is necessary to fill water stations from a hose, at least run the old water out. Water sitting in a garden hose can contain bacteria and other micro-organisms.

Marathon 50 for me on tired legs so felt much harder than it probably was. But great inaugural marathon. I enjoyed it. Also people came out. It was fun.
