COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Just a couple thoughts - very organized expo and packet pickup. The course is good - I saw a couple people turn their ankles due to potholes and there were some lengthy concrete sections, but overall the surface was good. The water stops were well staffed but really 'short' - it was easy to miss the Powerade handouts since there were only 2-3 people providing that fluid. Luckily the protesters were not there this year. Nice post-race amenities but it was a long walk down the hill to the food station. Even with these feedback items - it is an event that I will consider repeating. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my third marathon and the smallest one I've done. Because of the enthusiasm of the crowds, I'd never have known it was a small race. The course was interesting, the bands were fun, the water/energy drink stops were perfect, and at mile 23 (?) when I was wishing for a coke, *POOF* there was a stand with pretzels, gummy bears and coke! The downhill finish was wonderful too! | |

"Great Marathon, Again" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Windy day for running but an excellent showing (again) by the organizers and supporters of this perfectly-sized marathon. The scenic urban/rural course was well-marked and aid stands were well-staffed. The pre-race pasta dinner was average but Bart Yasso was a good speaker. Race t-shirt and medal were nice. I will be back. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my first marathon and I selected it largely based upon the reviews and comments on this site. I found the reviews to be helpful. It was a well-organized race. There was sufficient parking in downtown Richmond. The water/powerade/gel stations were well-manned. The course was generally flat. The crowds and fans were supportive. I especially liked all of the signs and banners of support that were posted. This made a difference especially during those last six miles of the race. I would definitely like to run this race again! | |

Weather a bit on the cool side, but not a lot you can do about that!! Loved the contrast between city streets and country roads along the river. Overall an excellent race. | |

"Gradual Rolling Hills With Descents - Scenic" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my 25th marathon. On a scale of 1 to 10, with the Chicago Marathon being 0, having virtually no hills, I would describe Richmond as a '3'. There were many gradual uphill climbs followed by a lot of downhills. The finish this year was into the wind for about 7 miles but was on a downhill grade. Fantastic bathroom support (port-a-potties at every water station) & plenty of water, Gatorade and even junk food! The course is very scenic. Excellent crowd support & race organization. It also featured the best pasta dinner yet but wished we could have eaten it earlier instead of 6pm. This was a great race but I was not prepared for the hills. | |

"Great scenic course." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I was pleasantly surprised by this race. The directors did a great job in all respects. Packet pick-up was pleasant and the expo was worth going to. Rarely do I shop at the expos, but this time I actually bought several new pairs of shoes (older models though ? 2070?s etc) at discount prices. The bus tour of the course was organized, fast, and efficient. The course itself was entertaining. The portion near the river was relaxing and beautiful, and almost made the race seem like any other scenic weekend long run. The bridges were a bit tedious, but I guess you need those to get over the river. Music and spectators were spread out along the entire course. Miles 21 through 24, north of downtown Richmond, weren?t the most exciting, but few cities can offer 26 miles of entertainment. Overall the weather was perfect and the course was perfect. I really had no one but myself to point to when I ended up 5 minutes shy of qualifying for Boston. |
