"Friendly fast somewhat boring but good overall" (about: 2018)

If you like a flat course and having to use the same muscle group ALL day then this is a race for you. Great organization. Easy packet pick up, easy close by parking, bus transport on time as was race start. Rained all day but temps comfortable. Somewhat boring route until you get back to Greenville-some beautiful residential areas. Huge finisher medal and great shirt. Volunteers were great and plenty of water stops. Nice to have shorter races available for others in your group not doing the full. I'd do it again.

Such an awesome experience. First class organization. I've seen smaller expos at much larger races. Everyone was SO friendly. Packet pickup was a breeze, the shirt is outstanding and I love a string bag for additional swag! It rained (SO MUCH RAIN) the entire day but EVERY aid station was manned and the people were awesome.

My friend won Grand Master Champion, 2 other friends set PRs and I was 2nd in my age group - extra swag! SO MUCH FOOD at the end (and beer). SUPER race. Would highly recommend.

"Impressive Small Race!" (about: 2018)

I was very impressed with the Mississippi River Marathon. The race packet pick up, and transport to starting line was super easy. The weather this year was not the best, rained the entire race and temps in the 60's. However, the race started right on time. The middle of the race 7-20 was on the highway, but it's super flat and the miles seemed to fly by. Running over the Mississippi Bridge was very cool. I was a bit concerned about running up hill for one mile, but it was not very steep and not near as difficult as anticipated. This is a small race, so there was not a lot of spectators cheering you on. But, all of the volunteers were super nice and water stops every mile. I was able to get the print out of my results and pick up my award immediately after the race. The race shirt and medal were very nice, much better than some larger marathons. Free race photos is also a great bonus. Kudos to the race director. Excellent Job! I highly recommend this race!

"What a gem!" (about: 2017)

As part of my 50 state completion, I chose to do the Mississippi River race and am so glad I did! The race organizers are superb as was their choice of an awesome medal and one of the best shirts I have ever received! Had considered Jackson but instead did MS on Saturday and was able to do the race in Birmingham, AL on Sunday. It's a 5 hour drive but straight across & easy. The course is FLAT, crossing a lovely bridge over the Mississippi was neat and the police were SO welcoming at all cross streets. Few spectators but my husband was easily able to drive the course and catch me several times. Some variation in the course might make it more interesting but easy to PR. We were given bottled water at our hotel and really, it's the delta of the Mississipppi that causes the coloring. Great band at the end and good food in a large tent. VERY WELL DONE!!

"the good the bad and the ugly" (about: 2017)

The good: the volunteers, the shirt, the overall organization of the race, free pictures to download, and 12 miles of the course. The bad: water the color of mud and the rest of the course. Would I run this race again with this course again, probably not. Change the course to remove all of the miles on the highway and use bottled water instead of Mississippi water, definitely.

I am attempting the 50 States and DC, and tried my hand at MS here, and I was glad I did. It was a great marathon, well organized and unique. Would recommend it to anyone! Flat, scenic, interesting race - point to point from Arkansas to Mississippi across a beautiful bridge. So many water stations, more than I've ever encountered in my 45 marathon experiences. The medal and shirt were great, and since it is a small town, low key race, your supporters can easily meet you along the way. Starts and runs along a lake for the first 10 miles, then across the Mississippi River at the half way point, and glides along flat delta land right to the end. If there wasn't a heavy wind that day, it would be a definite PR opp. There were very few spectators, but those who raced and the people you encounter in town are very friendly. As this marathon could count for Arkansas or Mississippi, I would certainly give it a try!

"Fast (but windy) small town race" (about: 2016)

This was a great small town marathon and perfect for 50 staters looking to knock off either Arkansas or Mississippi. Im from Saint Louis and had no trouble driving down on Friday and back on Saturday after my run. Packet pickup was at the Greenville Mall and easy to find once you entered, and there are plenty of local choices for pre-race dinners. (I had a nice meal at Keplers Italian Kitchen.) Id highly recommend staying at the Rodeway Inn as it is literally across a parking lot from the bus loading and the finish line.

I was very impressed with the organization and the overall helpfulness of the race organizers. We got tons of e-mail communication before our race, the bus loading to the start line in Arkansas went very smoothly, and there were bonfires to keep runners warm before we made or way to the start line. (It was 33 degrees outside in 2016.)

I had read several comments that this course was long, but my Garmin measured it at almost exactly 26.2 miles. The run through Lake Village for the first six miles and Greenville through the last six was lovely. The rest of the race is pretty much run on the highway. You get some nice views of the river, but aside from that it isnt terribly scenicwith the exception of the three or four miles that are run on the bridge crossing the Mississippi. This was a very cool portion of the marathon with some spectacular scenery. I can see this being a very fast race most years, but we had winds of up to 15 MPH in 2016, and I really felt it during those 14 miles of highway running. There were no natural wind barriers, and since this is a point to point course, it pretty much slammed us for the entire middle portion of the run. (This is, of course, nothing that can be helped.) Aid stations were plentiful and spaced roughly a mile apart, and while there was little crowd support along the course, the post- race celebration was well- run with plenty of food and drinks for the runners. Our race shirts and medals were lovely, as were the trophies for the top finishers.

The only small suggestion that I would make would be to put mats down over the grating on the bridge if possible. Aside from that, I enjoyed this run and love the cause that it supports!

"Good but change the start!" (about: 2016)

The bad: ALL the buses left at 6:30, so even though buses start loading at 6:00, we sat on the bus for 1/2 hour before leaving. We got to start at 7:30; only FIVE porta-potties. Start was a 5-minute walk. LOTS of people still at portapotties at race start. Otherwise, great organization. Loved the portapotties and aid at every mile really great 'visualization' of the miles, as you could see the porta potties from a ways away. The course is what it is beautiful for the first few miles; along the shoulder of a highway for lots of miles; appreciated the miles through the gated community before reaching town. Great after-party beer, pizza, tamales. Volunteers were spectacular. Holiday Inn Express lets you check out late (we asked for 3 pm and got it).

Small race with good people everywhere.
Getting my bib at the mall was very low key.
I appreciated the quick prayer, the quick welcome from the mayor and they nicely recorded national anthem at the start.
Running over the beautiful bridge was definitely the highlight of the course. Was it long? They are always long. :)

Very well organized race. Plenty of water stops and porto johns along the course. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and they had breakfast available at 5 am, which was a nice benefit. Agree that the course was long but I cannot recommend this marathon enough.
