I have run 24 marathons from big (+10K) to small (200). This was well organized. The course went from city to farmland. I had a lot of fun. The 18 to 20 mile route hit hard winds (+20mph) which was difficult, but would be ideal in normal spring weather. The finish at the captital was nice. Ideas for next year would be to reduce some of the roads with 2-WAY traffic and incorporate more of the river trail.

Ran the Half.
PROS:
Great course. In Lansing, out to East Lansing and Michigan State grounds and back along the river trail. Just enough hills to make it interesting. Enough flats to give me a good time.

Well organized start and finish. Nice to be greeted at finish line by race director, Dr Owen and a hug from the volunteer who gave me that great medal!

Medal probably the best I've ever received. Rave reviews from family and friends who have seen it!
We stayed in downtown Lansing at the Radisson. Perfect location. Clean, safe and friendly.

CONS: Sorry, but there's a few 'opportunities for improvement' I'd like to offer.

Expo. The mezz of the stadium sounds neat in theory but April is not the time of year for an outdoors expo. Any other vendors available for running merchandise? We bought a few items from the vendor there but we saw only one selling anything.
The website had late, insufficient and inconsistent information. If I were to pre-judge the race by the website I would be really worried about the organization of the whole race. On race day, everything went just perfect from what I experienced. The website needs to provide timely (ie early),complete and accurate info.
We booked early at the Radisson to make sure we had something. It was perfect for a location within blocks of the start, the finish and the expo. Not the host hotel? Not even a 'partner' hotel?
Really, the pros greatly outweigh any cons. Had a great race and really enjoyed our experience in Lansing.

"A decent marathon" (about: 2012)

Well, the wind was vicious but I don't hold that against the race. The course was hillier than I expected and the biting wind didn't help. The race seemed pretty well organized. I registered at the last minute and still was able to participate. There was no free parking and no signs telling you where to find the start finish line, packet pick up, or gear check. The gear check was a block away from packet pick up and then it was two blocks from the finish. I didn't fell like there were enough water stations. Not enough power gels either. It was a confusing finish as you finish with halfmarathoners and the relays. I got the wrong medal and had to go back and get the correct one. The food at the end was nice and event staff was friendly. I was a rather boring course, but I don't really run for the scenery. I don't think I would run this again... but you never know.

"Great first marathon with room to improve" (about: 2012)

*The course was wide enough to never feel packed in or crowded
*Have race day packet pick-up - two trips to Lansing this weekend wasn't exactly ecological and green, much less inexpensive with gas - if there isn't race day pick-up next year, I won't be participating.
*For after race snacks, perhaps some fruit or protein (expensive I know) and not so much sugar
*Start the pre-race announcements earlier with a better sound system - couldn't understand one word said
*Great traffic control and signage marking the course
*The aid stations were perfectly spaced with wonderful volunteers
