After thinking I was going to run the 10k race 4 years ago and finding out at the last minute that I was running the whole marathon, I have done it every year, and every time it has been an exiting and daunting experince every time. The crowds are great the entire race. The support from the Marines and Corpsman is awesome. As for those who didnt get a finisher medal....run faster. The worst part by far about the course is the bridge, but after that its almost over. Finishing at the Iwo Jima Memorial is a great thing, but nothing compaired to what the Marines had accomplished in the island hopping campaign.

"An AWESOME Experience" (about: 2013)

This race is huge. It is what I call the total experience you need to do at least once in your lifetime. The expo was great. Had tight security and a fast moving longer than hell line for packet pick up. The weather was a perfect sunny 50*F. The entire experience was the crowds...millions of people showed up to cheer us on. The course was filled with runners and the course through town and country was amazing. The run down the National Mall past the Capital and Smithsonian and out towards the Pentagon and Crystal city were the most memorable stretches I have ever run in my life. Everybody was a star that day. Marathon photo did an amazing job and the Marines were the best! I plan to run this monster every year of my life that they will allow me!

The 2014 race had its hiccups (registration, power outage and worst of all-lack of finisher's medals) For whatever reason 2014 was the year to adapt and overcome, make changes and move forward. Maybe too much had gone right for too long. The race is terrific. I've run it a few times now and the motivation, fan fare and excitement can not be topped for a marathon. The moment I crossed the finish line I said that I wanted to do it the year after. Not because of the mileage, but because of the people surrounding me. People are running for their lost children, hope in humanity. People are pushing their wounded warriors who can't run themselves. It's inspirational, it's emotional. The course takes you through DC and some of the burbs. There are a couple long stretches of suck but they climax with the best crowds the Marines can offer. Highly recommmed this race. I've got 45 more years to live...I want to do it 30 more times.

"Lots of love for this race" (about: 2013)

This was, by far, the largest marathon I had run. We went to the expo late Friday to pick up my bib and the line wasn't too bad at all and NO line for the shirt. The course was fairly flat and interesting, and the spectators and Marines were terrific. The MCM app came in really handy to track runners and figure out the metro. Definitely one to download. For me, this race was one and done. There was a lot of hype around it and 30,000 runners made me claustrophobic. The finish area was chaos. I'll stick to the smaller, west coast races.

The weather was perfect. Running this route is beautiful. I think this may be one of the very best marathons for first timers. However, if you are an experienced runner and looking to set a PR be aware that this course can be very congested. I had to bob and weave on this course more than any other. I frequently had to run slower during the first half because there was no space to pass people. As others have noted, registration was problematic and packet pickup was one of the worst I've ever participated in. I won't come back, but I will recommend it to people who are going to run their first.

"You can't beat the Marines" (about: 2013)

The only significant 'con' to this race is how large it is. The Expo is gigantic, and so is the line. The race itself is crowded. Don't expect to PR here, unless you exert substantial effort to get through the crowds. BUT the race is otherwise phenomenal, every other aspect. It's a good, fair, and challenging course towards the end in particular, like 20-26.2.

The Marines do it right. If you showed up at the Expo at off-peak times, there was no waiting. Course was well marked, Marines ran it like clockwork, spectators were more than plentify. It really is The People's Marathon.

"Below standards from past MCM's" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 4-5 Marine Corps Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 5

I have participated in four of the last five MCM's and this one did not match the quality of my previous three. In my previous experiences this marathon ran like clockwork. Everything from registration to the post-race celebration was outstanding.
Cons:
1. The registration process was extremely frustrating as the registration site kept crashing from the moment it opened. Left many, including myself, very frustrated with partial registrations/non-registrations/did I register?
2. The packet pick up at the Expo was horrible. Had to stand in line, which weaved around the Bib tent, for more than an hour due to only two security tables checking bags. The tent was nearly empty inside with most booths empty. Then had to wait another 15-30 minutes or so to get shirts and bags.
3. I was lucky to finish early, but I understand that they ran out of medals for the late finishers. Although many of us don't run for the 'Bling,' it adds to the frustration many of us experienced from registration day.
Pros:
1. Marines support at the start, along the course, and at the finish was outstanding.
2. The food and drinks provided.
3. The Finisher's Medal (while they last).
My past three MCM's were outstanding and I hope they fix the problems they experienced this year otherwise I might have to find another favorite marathon in the future.

This was my second USMC Marathon and there is a reason why is top 3 in the U.S. and top 10 in the world. The Marines did an outstanding job, great course, excellent expo, and to run along all the vets priceless.

11-50 previous marathons | 3 Marine Corps Marathons

This is a great event, from the start with parachutists carrying huge American flags, to the Marines organizing and working the water stops to the finish at the Iwo Jima Memorial. The Crowds are amazing and supportive, the course is hard, hilly. The course is crowded at the start, they went back to one wave with people self organizing themselves by time markers (unsurprisingly not that effective). Needless to say a lot of military running and supporting. The day was perfect, the people on the course are so nice. The medal is so cool. I can't express this well - but you really feel good running with this crowd. The finish area is a little tight, but the line of Marines congratulating you, and the salute as the give you the medal make it well worth it - Semper Fi! Oorah! do this one at least once.
