 "Not Impressed!" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Lots of problems at this 'inaugural' Rock n Roll race. It began with the fiasco of trying to get into the Expo. The police and outside staff were completely overwhelmed with the traffic which stretched in gridlock over the island bridge. They eventually parked us in a grass field well away from the Convention Center. Inside went like clockwork however. The course was, well, not scenic at all. They ran the full and half marathon folks through the 'hood' and next to a garbage truck depot. Then the full marathon folks got routed on a long deserted section of highway- Yuk! I expected to see at least some of 'historic' Savannah along the way- Not! Guess the 'historic Savannah' coalition squashed that idea huh? A couple of the bands I passed belted out some good music. Most were just local mediocre musicians trying to appease the runners. I will say the neighborhood crowds were supportive and cheery. Plus there was an over abundance of medical support and plenty of port-a-pottys the entire course. But I heard so many runners say they would never come back and I agree. I never ran a Rock n Roll marathon before and expected better. Savannah needs to get their act together next year or maybe even consider making this a 1/2 marathon only city. It definitely can't support a full marathon. BTW, did I mention they ran us along a desolate section of highway? | |

 "Decent Race with Some Inaugural Experiences" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This was my first Rock 'n Roll race and it was decent overall but clearly some first time mistakes. Transportation was a problem as we had to park at a mall and catch a bus to the start. The bus drivers were not from the area and the directions they had did not get us to the start. We had to tell the driver to just let us off so we could get to the start on our own. The shirts were nice and the expo was well organized. I liked the corral start and one-minute intervals between releasing each group. The course was flat but some of the neighborhoods were not the most scenic and several miles of the full marathon were run on a closed parkway, with more concrete being the only thing to focus on. Food at the finish could be better as there were only bananas, fruit cups (with no spoons) and mini-bagels in addition to water and Cytomax. Music and fan support on the course were good as many local residents watched and cheered runners from their homes. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 Visiting Savannah for the first time, I was excited to see the picturesque and historic blocks it is famed for. And I did afterwards. Most of the 26 miles (21-ish) took runners through a range of sad environs industrial, foreclosed, and in a major no-no for so late in the race, along a windswept highway from Miles 20-24. What possible reason could there be for failing to showcase such gorgeous tree-lined architecture? I can only figure the city refused to give permission to the inaugural marathon to run too heavily through the best, historically landmarked part of the city. And while the volunteers and staff were great, logistical and traffic issues made the expo and day-of shuttles 90 minute-plus nightmares. Hopefully Year 2 will improve enough to honor such a wonderful, friendly, delicious-tasting city. | |

| 1 Rock 'n' Roll Savannah Marathon
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Ran the inaugural Savannah R & R and it was the worst experience of my 21 marathons. I like Savannah however this marathon is organized and ran from San Diego making it a nightmare for runners to work with the organization. Savannah is NOT a city like the larger ones with a R & R marathon and cannot handle the numbers of people. Facts, packet pick up ended at 7PM on Friday night (had to be extended to 8PM because the directions to the packet pickup were horrible, put the runners on a 2 hour parking lot of traffic-unnecessary. No buddy pickup of packets with photostat ID. Race parking/shuttle from mall parking 35 min. Bus ride from start was so crowded that est. Over 2000 runners never made it to start line within 30 mins. Of race start. Course was run with 3-4 miles in slums, less than 2 miles in the nice part of downtown, then two legs on an interstate out and back totaling about 6 miles including 3.5 miles into the wind slightly uphill miles 21-24 until the last 2 miles turned off into the city park are to finish. 4 hairpin switchbacks on the course. Again, I've run 21 including 3 Marine Corps, this is by far the biggest rip off. Standing in the mall parking lot in 40 degree temps with 15 MPH winds for an hour? 2-3000 runners can stay downtown near start (number of close hotel rooms) if you make reservations 9 months ahead of time-i tried reservations 5 months out and was laughed at. What do the other 20,000 do? Stay miles away and sweat getting into a 'river blocked city' on one side, arrive an hour late at the start etc. | |

 "Well Organized, Especially for 1st Race" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 First of all, hats off to all of the volunteers. They made for a great race. Aid stations were well manned and well stocked. Plenty of water and Cytomax. The course as good and well planned out. Flat course, except for that miles 20-24 were on a freeway and seemed to be all uphill (and that stiff head wind didn't help matters). Nice hefty medal (like what you'd expect from a RnR marathon). The post race food and support was also adequate/sufficient. Personally I prefer smaller races for theirs post race support because they seem a little more personal. But it's hard to be personal with 23,000 runners. My only complaint was that it was a bit of a pain getting to the expo. We sat in traffic for over an hour the final mile trying to get to the expo. I talked to others who used the ferry and they had similar comments. I would have also like to have seen a different shirt for the marathon versus the half. All in all, a well put together race. Good course, good fans, great volunteers. | |

COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 4 It you are thinking of coming to run this race to see the beauty of the city, then think again! Most of the race runs through all the roads that cross a railway and if you do the full, you run about 5 miles on the freeway! And fit the expo!! We sat on the bridge for an hour, stood in line inside and then the same getting out!!! |
