COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I've run about 25 marathons, and this is in the top 25%. In terms of organization, it was among the best! Nice to run back and forth between two best friends (U.S. and Canada) across the bridge and along the waterfront. Not too hilly, except for the bridge, but that's early in the raise, so we are all wise enough to conserve energy going up and down this. Through some nice neighbourhoods in Detroit,.. and when I ran it, nice weather and friendly crowds. For a midsize marathon, excellent choice!! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I've run 5 marathons and this by far was the best race. First, the social facebook page kept the upcoming event exciting. The organizers were active and kept the runners engaged. The expo was pretty awesome. Overall, the entire event was well organized. Plus, you get to run to another country. I highly recommend this marathon. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I have run 7 marathons and this is the best organized. The expo was the best and largest I have seen (better than Marine Corps, Boston and Philadelphia). The course was pretty good but I would have like to have run past the baseball and football stadiums (since there was a game that day I completely understand that is not possible but if the Lions are off that day, it would improve the course). The bridge and tunnel crossings are interesting but 1st timers should be prepared for the sauna experience in the tunnel with several thousand runners. The water stops during the 1st half do need to be bigger. I would also throw my kudos to the pace groups. I was helped by the 4:00 hour pace group until leg cramps at mile 24 made me drop back in speed. Our pacer was right on schedule for the entire run I was there. And what other course has belly dancers to cheer on the runners? | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 In regards to P.H. in Metamora, I wanted to let her know that my name is Bill Preston, and I am the pacer of the 4:30 team (and have been since the inception of the pace team at Detroit). I would encourage you to check my results in Detroit (I average 4:29:35). Our entire pace team takes tremendous pride in accuracy and maintaining an accurate pace for the entire race. We are not a local running club and some of our team comes from across the country to work this event. We coach and motivate our runners the entire time, but unfortuantely I never had the pleasure of meeting you since you were not following me. We ask our runners to put their name on their back as well as their goal time with hopes that the group can strike up a conversation and stay together. I could see how this may have caused confusion but a simple question of 'hey are you the pace leader?' could have resolved that. Detroit (in my opinion) is a fantastic race. I hope that you will consider stopping by our booth (we are right beside packet pick up) and chat with us, or look for our 3 foot tall signs that we carry for the duration of the race. I always work the expo on Friday (open to close) and welcome your visit. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I don't know what P.H. from Metamora is complaining about. Pacer Bill (male) was the pace leader for the 4:30 group was spot on and a joy to run with. I finished just in front of him at 4:29:02 and he finished at 4:29:15. The only thing I can think is P.H. was looking at clock time at the finish and not chip time. Clock time was approx 4:45 when I crossed the finish line. The corrals and stagered starts meant there was about 15 minutes from the first gun until the gun for our corral. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Another wonderful Free Press Marathon!! To the person who thought the 4:30 pacer was way off...I ran with the 4:30 pace group from start to finish, and the I finished in 4:28. Pacer Bill was awesome and inspiring throughout the race, encouraging the group and sharing post marathon recovery tips as well. You must have mistaken another group for the 4:30 one. Thanks again Pacer Bill. | |

"Blame Canada!" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Everything was great except for 1 thing. If you have had a DUI at any point in your life do not run this race. I talked with the race officials in April about getting a timely response if Canada would not let me into their country because of this. They assured me I would know in 2 weeks and I did not find out that I was 'criminally inadmissable' until 9 days before the race. I had to change my travel plans at the last minute and travel to Detroit with no way of knowing if I would be able to run the marathon. After going to immigration in Canada I discovered that if I paid the $200 fee (ie bribe) that I could run. While crossing the border my girlfriend forgot about her mace and that almost cost me $500 and a night in jail. Canadian officials blamed the marathon for the late notice. Marathon officials blamed Canadian immigration. Love Detroit! Loved the marathon, but that was a lot of unnecessary stress. I will not be back. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Course is flat, though true flatlanders may be challenged by the long-ish bridge approach and the upward part of the tunnel. Roads are generally in good condition. Bridge had 2 lanes open to runners which was still crowded. I did not lose time but those farther back may have had more bunching. Crowd support is sparse in most areas, though good downtown, in Windsor, and in Indian Village. Some parts are rather industrial not scenic. However, bridge/tunnel run makes up for that. Medal is very nice quite heavy, too. Shirt is good nice design and distinguishes half from the full in the text. Seemed to be sufficient food at the end, though not a lot of variety that I saw. Overall, it is a good race. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 This was my first marathon so I have nothing to compare it to but I know for certain that two of the mile markers were incorrect. That's pretty frustrating. The pacers were a joke. I finished in 4:44 ahead of the 'pacer' whose pace was to finish at 4:30! The spectators were enthusiatic in parts of the course but completely absent on many areas of it. The medal and jersey are both nice enough. The course was super easy, no hills to speak of, a good first time course. The run over the bridge was great but it was hot and claustrophobic through the tunnel. And people on their cell phones...that was hilarious. You can't be away from your phone for 4 hours...pretty pitiful!! All in all it was nice run, the weather held out which made for a great day. |
