This race has great potential but needs work. Some streets were in bad disrepair and had you focusing on not stepping into potholes vs. running. The International part of the race was great...with great views of the Detroit Skyline. Belle Isle was nice as was the Indian Village part of the run. Finishing inside Ford Field was unique and exciting. Crowds were sporadic at best and appeared to stay in the downtown area. More 'spirit stations' and music would help. (get advice from the Indianapolis Mini -- over 30 stations on the 13.1 mile course). Water stops were plentiful - thanks! A few mile mile markers were way off or hard to see making pacing efforts difficult. No designated 'reunion' area made finding family members challenging.

The course was very interesting with nice diversions to a scenic island park (Belle Isle) and to Canada via the bridge and tunnel. The lakefront path in Windsor afforded good views of the Detroit skyline. The Indian Village neighborhood was also a nice touch. Finishing in Ford Field was an exciting end to the race. The course was mostly flat with the exception of two moderate climbs during the bridge and tunnel portions (I set a PR). The weather this year was a perfect 58 degrees and mostly overcast.

Organization was very favorable with aid stations virtually every mile. I did encounter a couple of rude volunteers at the expo and at the finish line and there was some confusion at the start regarding the location of bag checks, etc. I also believe that there was a misplaced mile marker in the tunnel that led me to believe I was running out of steam at mile 9! Both the race shirt and medal were quality with nice designs.

Crowd support was about average for a mid-sized marathon, with many enthusiastic supporters, but several stretches with few spectators. Several viewers did hand out goodies such as oranges, candy and beer. My last comment is that it would nice to have a post-race party with a sponsor other than low-carb Michelob Ultra (we need carbs after running 26 miles)!

"A great race!" (about: 2004)

This was my third marathon (I have run Marine Corps and Flying Pig) and had a great time. I foud the course a little hard on the knees - there was a lot of concrete instead of ashphalt that I am used to running on. The climb into and out of Ford Field at the end were a little painful, but it's nice to finish on the field! I really enjoyed the Ambassador Bridge and the Tunnel - they, to me, were unique to this course. One thing I would not recommend - the race hotel (the Marriott and the Renaissance Centre). We had a number of issues with them and I personally would not book back in there if we came for a second time.

"fun race, I recommend it" (about: 2004)

Friendly people in Detroit. The expo could use some speakers, but it was a very nice course - some roads are a little rough but most of the course interesting and was run on a nice route.

On the downside, we ran past the Detroit Free Press building and there was not a soul there; since it's their marathon, I thought there would be a band and a group of well wishers. Also I was so excited about running into Ford Field, but my family and friends weren't allowed on the field AT ALL, and had to stay outside to try to find me after the run. It was very confusing. I hope next time they have it so the spectactors can be on the sidelines of the course on the field, as that was disappointing.

But I would definitely put this race on your list to run sometime.

"Tacking up the Detroit River" (about: 2004)

I use to have a sailboat, but with kids in hockey and dance can't afford the sport any longer. Now, I tack my way up the Detroit River by running. I realized my progress on the Belle Isle bridge and reflected. I'll have these memories for a lifetime. I've done four Port Huron to Mackinaw races, even 1985, but the sense of accomplishment I get from running a marathon is wild.

This marathon was an extraordinary experience for me. Running across the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor, Ontario, then along the waterfront with the Detroit skyline across the river, then back to Detroit through a mile-long tunnel, around Belle Isle, and finishing inside Ford Field -- it was a fantastic marathon with lots of spectators lining the course. I could do this one again.

"Good Race for ALL" (about: 2004)

The course was good and kept your interest as you crossed into Canada twice. The ending in Ford Field with thousands of people watching and screaming was incredible. I thought that running with the half marathoners for 13 miles would cause a problem with congestion but there was plenty of room for all. Great run!

"Awesome Race that needs some fine tuning" (about: 2004)

This is the second time I've run the Marathon in Detroit, and the third year in a row I've run an event here (5 person relay last year). I loved modifications to the course, and spectators were pretty good throughout. My only question is, why is it so hard to have accurate mile splits? This is the second year in a row where some of the miles markers were off (or not there at all like mile 4 on the Bridge where I was trying to find my pace). Also, some of the people giving splits were way off. Some were fast, some were slow. They should all be right on! That would be enough to freak me out if I didn't have my own watch. Detroit really put on a great event, but those two things DEFINITELY need to be addressed for next year.

"8 mile fans were FANTASTIC" (about: 2004)

After crossing back into the US through the tunnel, you are greated by hundreds of screaming fans! Gave me the encouragement I needed for the rest of the race. Belle Island was a bit quiet, but the last 1/2 mile was again wall to wall fans. Great Race Detroit! See you next year.

This was a great first time marathon. The course was mostly flat and the spectators were fabulous! The weather was perfect, and running into Ford Field at the end was awesome!
