"I was impressed" (about: 2010)

For the first year, I thought there were few, if any, kinks in the organization. I've found that a good expo (this one had a smaller one, but it was still nice), an interesting course (this one had a variety of hills, roads and even some trails), a cool shirt (this is one of the better ones I've received) and a fun post-race party (food and massage) make for the best marathons. This race exceeded my expectations. It was my 12th overall. The course was kind of tough. Hilly and lonely at the end, but I had a lot of fun and would recommend it. Kudos race director(s).

"Great first-time event" (about: 2010)

This event was tremendous for an inaugural year. I thought the course was hilly but manageable with only 2 TOUGH hills, and another 2-3 longer, steady rises. Much of the course was on the scenic Pheasant Branch Trail and was pretty and very easy on the legs. I have no complaints about the course layout except to reiterate the mile marker spacing that others have mentioned. Aid stations were adequate and gel seemed to be at almost every other one - usually you MIGHT find gel at like mile 13 and 19 or something similar. The medal was a neat design, but it was tiny; they say this was because the race was so inexpensive. I hope next year that they increase the price by $5 and give us something to be more proud of. I thought the packet pickup and expo were especially great for a small race. Overall, it was a very impressive event and I'll be back every year.

"Beautiful but hilly course" (about: 2010)

The course was beautiful and winding through town and the countryside. However, there were big hills around miles 13, 23 and 25 that were killers. The organization and overall set up was good for a first-year event. Perfect time of year for this event. We have already recommended it to several friends.

"Fantastic Debut" (about: 2010)

I've run 70 marathons and loved this race. It was very well organized and there was a parking ramp right next to the start/finish area. We had perfect weather. It was Halloween weekend and many of my fellow runners wore fun and creative costumes - as did most of the volunteers and many of the spectators. There weren't a lot of spectators in many places, but they were very enthusiastic. There are plenty of hills on the course, but they were balanced by several beautiful long stretches of trails through woods and a pheasant conservation area. Water and sport drink stations were about every mile and gel was offered at least 8 times. A real bonus for me was the high quality WOMEN'S-sized shirt. I'll be back next year.

"Scenic with hills" (about: 2010)

The course was tough and had lots of rolling hills. The aid stations were great with lots of stuff and help. The only really bad comment I have - and everybody said the same thing - was the mile markers were not even close to being where they should of been. The finish line refreshments were great.

"Very well organized, scenic and fun race." (about: 2010)

For a first-time race, this was a terrific event. The race was very well supported with frequent aid stations that didn't scrimp on gel. The spectators were extremely enthusiastic, and plentiful for a small race. The halloween theme contributes to a very festive atmosphere. The recovery area was well set out, with a tent, tables and plenty of chairs. The food offerings were not particularly enticing, but the presence of the Capital Brewery beer station more than made up for the lack of other appetizing carbs. Slight negatives: this was a hilly race, which I ordinarily think makes the course more interesting, but having to run up three pretty good inclines in the last 3 miles was brutal. The course is beautiful but not particularly fast. A few of the mile markers seemed out of place, which can be a little disconcerting if you're trying to monitor your pace. On balance, though, I would heartily recommend this race for anyone looking for a fun fall marathon and who isn't overly stressed about nailing a PR or BQ.
