These guys got it right the first time. This was a wonderful, well organized race. Plenty of water, GU, and port-a-potties as well as a nice medal and shirt. Plenty of post-race food as well. Not many spectators, though it is on a wooded path, but those that were there were very supportive. I will definitely do this one again in the future.

Considering this was the inaugural year for Tobacco Road, I think it was a complete success and very well organized. I ran the full and my previous experiences are with much larger races like Chicago. I agree that the parking situation wasn't ideal (why I ranked the organization a 4 not a 5), but I was able to get a parking pass and it made parking a snap. The course was really nice and while I was worried about all the runners on such a narrow trail, it really didn't impede anyone. One note of caution: the course is sneaky hilly. There are no monsters to crest, but there were lots of long uphill 2% or so graded hills that seemed to go on forever between mile 18 and 23... just when you want them! I'll either run or volunteer next year since I had such a great time this year. BTW, the aid stations were very well run and well stocked.

"Great trail marathon" (about: 2010)

This was the inaugural event. I had some concerns about the fact that 20 out of the 26+ miles were on the American Tobacco Trail (ATT) which is only about 10 feet wide. They limited the course to 900 marathoners and 2000 half marathoners. At the end, the course was not crowded and the organizers did a good job in separating the full from the half marathoners. Aid stations were nice and well stocked. I would just get rid of the plastic cups and switch to paper cups. The finish was nice and it was nice to hear your name read in the speakers as you cross the line. Great race, I highly recommend.

REGISTER NOW! If you want to run this one, I wouldn't wait too long. This is a great race - once word gets around, this will fill up fast. It was limited to only 900 runners this year. I usually avoid first-time races (ever since Rock 'n' Roll San Diego), preferring to let them work the bugs out, but this was exceptionally well organized. This is a GREAT course - a flat, well maintained trail with plenty of water stops and supporters. Also, nice shirts and medals, with pizza and fresh bread at the finish, and a beer tent! My compliments to the organizers.

"Fast, scenic course on wooded trail" (about: 2010)

For this race's first year, things went off relatively smoothly. The two biggest problems I identified were: 1) that the Port-A-Johns were too few in number as many people were still in line when the race was about to stop. I actually went to the woods because I was running out time. and 2)The last three miles on the road was like a traffic jam due to the half marathoners. The running lane was very narrow which required zig-zagging through traffic to pass people. If they could get a whole road lane it would be much better.

Overall, I will say it was a nice event with a few, understandable first time kinks to be worked out. The mile markers were great and water stops were adequate.

"Great course, great staff, poor parking" (about: 2010)

I ran the half marathon and I thought the course was awesome! There were a few mild hills in the first and last 3 miles, but the whole middle was mostly flat. The trail was wide enough that you were not crowded and the aid stations were abundant. The only negative was the parking situation. The buses that shuttled the runners from the parking lot to the start/finish (5 miles) GOT LOST and the ride took almost 30 minutes!! And then at the conclusion of the race, there were not enough vans to take the runners back to the parking lot. Overall, it was a terrific race and I would love to run it again next year.
