"Challenging race with awesome volunteers!" (about: 2014)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Blue Ridge Marathon

The toughest marathon in America by far - but great course, gorgeous views, friendly runners, the BEST volunteers and a real sense of community in the organization, administration, and execution. While I'm not sure my knees can even handle those mountains again, I wish all the marathons I run are as friendly and down-to-earth as this one.

"The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly..." (about: 2014)

Now that I have come out of my daze a bit from the Blue Ridge Marathon ...... The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly..... What a gorgeous day! Donna Nixon said it well.... The day was a blessing. The first eight miles for me were extremely beautiful and peaceful as far as the scenery goes. Extraordinary views. It is an odd feeling to feel like you have already done a half marathon only to see the 3 mile marker coming at you. The course is UP. I am not sure what was up with the race crews and volunteers. They all LIED. I think everyone of them said, 'This is the last hill.' Ummm...no... There really was no last hill until the finish. I have no way of expressing how beautiful it was. You will just have to do it for yourself. Although I decided to do the full literally the day before....I felt pretty good and never thought about quitting. I realized after a few (lies) that I was going to continue to see hills so I just accepted it. The aid stations were frequent and the volunteers and everyone were great. I swear though....there was one aid station that must have ran out of water and started dipping it from their swimming pool. That water was NASTY! To make it worse....I contaminated my only water bottle with it so I couldn't drink until the next aid station. If I were a drinker the 'Moo Mosa' and Champagne/Beer stations would have been a welcome sight. I found myself calculating (when) I could stop running and just walk the rest. I miscalculated a little bit, but it turned out ok. You shouldn't try to do math when your brain doesn't work right and you are cross-eyed.
All-in-all....a very well done event. Beautiful and deserving of the 'America's Toughest Road Marathon' phrase until somebody can knock it off the top. I tip my hat to the strong folks that finish it fast and strong and I don't forget the Ultra-Runner's and Double Marathoner's who make it seem like a walk in the park.

Having run 70 marathons, this is near the top of my favorite marathons. I thought I was doing fine until a lady runner who had completed Boston on Monday, ran the course at 2:30 AM passed me during the regular marathon. I am already eager to run it in 2014 for my 5th year.

I knew that this would be 'America's toughest road marathon'. I was not disappointed, there were hills, hills and even more hills. They almost killed me but fantastic volunteeres kept me alive. Thank you Roanoke for a great race!

"A challenging, fun course with great volunteers" (about: 2013)

This is a very challenging, fun course with spectacular views from the top of the mountain. The volunteers and organization of the race were great. I have run this race twice and they make improvements each year. The water stations and volunteers along the way were wonderful and they had great refreshments at the end - loved the chocolate milk :)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first half marathon, I have to say I did not train for it I am not a runner that runs everyday, I work out alot cardio and weights. I ran 3 miles 4 weeks before the event I did not train for it I don't recomend doing the race with out traning like I did It is a hard race.I had so much fun the staff was wounderful to work with the runners were so nice and incouraged me when they would pass me.I had the best time it was hard I will say that I even finished with a time I was proud of sence I did not train for it. I will do this race again because the people were so nice and I have never seen so much help and incouragement in a sport as I did this marathon. I have started running this race gave me a passion to do so. Thank you all I loved the race for my first half marathon I picked Americas Toughest Road Course I am glad I did it was a wounderful experience.

"Very Tough, Very Scenic and Very Worthwhile" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Blue Ridge Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This is a TOUGH course with three major climbs and multiple smaller climbs, but it was worthwhile. The scenery is gorgeous with mountain views of blooming dogwood and redbud trees. The race organization is excellent and the spectators are enthusiastic. This race course is challenging but it was worth the extra effort to reach the finish line. I want to thank the RD, staff, volunteers and spectators for making this a great race.
