Marathon #97 and Blue ridge #2. A great course despite the 3 mountains. Gives the runner a great deal of satisfaction at the end. Good aid stations, enthusiastic volunteers, beautiful scenery, well organized, lots of liquid (not rain) and plenty of GU and munchies. Great effort in the rain by both volunteers and runners. Will return again next year.

What a great race in a great town with so many nice people. Themla Chicken and Waffle sum it up for me. "Welcome to the Family." You feel like it's your home town. Tough course; still feeling it today.

Awesome run! I loved everything about the event but my quads aren't as happy.

+ Tough course. Very challenging. You finally come off the last hill and hit more up and down rollers.

+ Great organization. Awesome volunteers. Well stocked aid stations. Well policed roads. Can't say thanks enough.

+ Roanoke is really nice. What's in the water that makes everyone so nice? Enjoyed the long drive through Virgina.

+ Perfect weather. (wink) Made it more of an accomplishment.

+ I know for a fact which marathon is toughest road marathon in the world.

After only 2 years, this is a model for other marathons. THANKS TO ALL!

"Awesome race." (about: 2011)

The Blue Ridge Marathon is a must-do race if a scenic, challenging course is what you are looking for. The course is scenic as well as brutal. There are three major climbs during this race that will have your calves and lungs begging for mercy, and the downhill sections will punish your quads and the soles of your feet to even out the abuse.

The 2011 race was well organized and, despite the wet weather this year, the volunteers were plentiful, upbeat and cheerful. The entire course had police at the intersections and volunteers at almost every turn (markers too). The aid stations were abundant and supplied with ample water, Heed and porta-potties. Crowd support on the mountain sections is limited by the nature of the course, and I'm sure this year the rain kept the crowd support down in the residential areas. The race expo was small, but that is sure to change as the event grows in popularity.

There is plenty to do and see in Roanoke before and after the race. Hotel rates were reasonable, with plenty of choices within a mile or two of the start.

There's a reason I've driven to Roanoke from Michigan the last two years to run this marathon, and will continue to do so as long as possible: The race, the city, and the people of Roanoke are awesome! Thank you for a perfect weekend.

That was an incredibly well done marathon - especially considering the weather conditions. The first 15 miles are extremely challenging, but remember, what goes up must come down, so there are lots of downhills to navigate with the ups. The final 20 miles trended down and made for the best final 20 I've ever had. So much fun! Yet so hard!

Despite the rain and wind, the course was beautiful. It had the most aid stations I've ever seen at a race. The gummy bears made me happy. :) Plenty of bathrooms and a very well marked course. The climbs were brutal but it's called the toughest road marathon - it's not like we didn't know what we were in for. Awesome volunteers and spectators - especially the group of ladies who stayed in the rain all day cheering us on. I must have seen them at least 5-6 times and it really helped my mood! Met some cool people and overall had a great experience. I'll be back.

This is my 4th marathon for the year, and my experience was great. This marathon was well organized, and the course was so beautiful. I had no problems with the hills; I prefer the downhill to the uphill. I've run ultra trail marathons that were much harder. This was a fun run for me. I am definitely looking forward to running again next year. I enjoyed every bit of it - the people and the volunteers were wonderful. The neighborhood people came out of the homes and cheered us on, which made the event worthwhile. The rain/storm did not stop the fun. See everyone next year.

"2011 half marathon - amazing race" (about: 2011)

First Marathon

This was my first half marathon (was signed up by a friend as a birthday gift). Forecast was rain and thunderstrom all the way. Had thought many times to call it off but showed up and it was worth it all the way. Best day of my life. Amazing supporters - they cheered all the way, and it never felt like I was running alone. Very difficult, so don't be shy if you have to walk. Well supported race. I know what I am doing in the second weekend of April next year (job/family permitting).

This event lived up to its name as America's Toughest Road Marathon, and I cannot wait to run this again. First of all, Roanoke is a awesome town and very welcoming. The race itself a mixture of unreal climbs and fast, very fast declines. The course was absolutely beautiful and the volunteers and the town supported this race with pride. It rained this year, then poured, and then we were deluged - and it all added to the mystique of this unbelievable race. Don't run the Blue Ridge Marathon if you are looking for a PR, but run it if you want one of the best marathon experiences you could ask for.
