"Well done!" (about: 2009)

I liked just about everything at this marathon. For a smallish, 2nd year race, the organizers did a fantastic job. A hilly and varied course made for a challenging and strategic race. The volunteers all seemed happy to be there and more importantly, happy to have us there. The reason I gave the fans a 3 rating is because there were so few of them, but I train alone, so any support at all is a bonus. Nice goody bag with technical hat and shirt. My only criticism would be that the nice furniture-themed medal is one of the smallest I have received. All in all, this race deserves to grow and prosper.

Well organized, very scenic race, but oh, those hills! Definitely a quad-buster, but you feel like you have accomplished something when you are through. Cool hats in the goody bag. If you are looking for a smaller race with lots of rolling scenic hills, this is your race.

"Great race! Very challenging!" (about: 2009)

This was a great race! I loved it... you know... the only way distance runners can like it. The course was tough, but that is to be expected in the "Piedmont." I loved the enthusiasm of the spectators... few and far between. If you want a great race for the "run," I would definitely consider putting this race on your calendar. I loved the M&M's after mile 13. Those really helped me! Being in the back of the "pack," so to speak, I was worried a little about running out of water and PowerAde. But no worries! They had it covered. Very well organized! Thank you, North Carolina, for a great experience.

"Fun marathon, hard course" (about: 2009)

It's a pretty tough course, with rolling hills most of the way. My biggest suggestion would be to change the plastic cups into paper cups (much easier to bend and drink out of), but other than that it was well run and organized. There aren't too many fans, but in a race with under 2,000 people, you can't really expect much more than there were.

"Not bad for a 2nd annual race in a different town" (about: 2009)

The event was very organized, with lots of help at the packet pickup and very friendly volunteers and police doing traffic control. Thanks to the City of High Point for offering their services (free!) after Greensboro was going to charge a lot! The course is much hillier than I expected from the description, although I live on the coast... so any hill is a big deal for me. A good route, as it had a mixed bag of neat neighborhoods and scenic rural roads. The crowd was basically non-existent throughout, with a few friendly people cheering us on. Water/aid stations were manned by friendly and enthusiastic folks, with plenty of fluids, gels, and even M&M's to keep you going. This is a good, small race if big crowds aren't your thing.

"A great marathon for the right person" (about: 2009)

This was the second year for the race, and first year in High Point. Overall, the race organizers did a great job for a small marathon. With a few small improvements, this race could be first-class. A few comments:

Price: I late registered, but I felt the race was expensive for a small marathon.

Course: Extremely hilly - I cannot remember a single flat spot the entire course. Course was well-marked, but the volunteers and police were not giving directions. With each turn/corner I had to look ahead to see the "Marathon Course" signs (which were very visible, though after 20 miles, I would rather be told where to turn rather than figure it out for myself). Again, very challenging course.

Pre-race, post-race: The start/finish were great, with lots of parking, and no confusion. The expo was organized, but very small; the post-race party was good, with lots of food, a band, and nice, brief awards ceremony.

Overall, it was a fun morning - I would really like to see this marathon grow in years to come.

"Good Job, volunteers; nice race" (about: 2009)

This was a great race. It has potential to be a BIG marathon someday. I must say first that the volunteers where the best I've ever seen at a marathon. There were plenty of them and they were always happy to help. Great job to all who gave up their time to be out there! It was also nice to see a few other snack choices at the water stops... for those of us who can't eat GU. The goody bag was very nice, with a running hat, water bottle, reusable bag and lots of other goodies. The shirts... nice look! Good job, High Point. One change: Let the host hotel know that, if you "host," you should make some kind of effort to have coffee and something to eat available - before the marathon people leave for the race. Also, a beautiful course, though it has some hills! Outstanding job for your second year, and first year in High Point.

"Small Marathon with lots of heart and HILLS." (about: 2009)

3 previous marathons
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This is a well organized event with lots of enthusatic volunteers. The course was very hilly; be ready for rolling hills with a few long climbs. The shirt and goody bag were very nice! Anther nice plus was the food at the finish. The medal is not that great. And they lacked sufficient port-a-potties at the start. Oh, they could use more water stations at the beginning of the race. The first one and second one were at around 2.5 miles and 4.5 miles, respectively. You need water early and often in a marathon.

For a new event, they really try to make it great! Kudos to the race directors.

"Great Marathon for First-Timers Like Myself" (about: 2009)

1 previous marathon | 1 UHC North Carolina Marathon

This marathon was on a beautiful course with supportive fans. The beginning of the course stretched through an affluent area and then through High Point University. The course was relatively flat and great for first-timers like myself. The drink stations along the route were top-notch. The volunteers were extremely helpful and positive. The only criticism I have was the too few port-o-johns at the start of the race (with very long lines). That aside, I would definitely do this race again next year.

"Great up and coming marathon!" (about: 2009)

This is a great up-and-coming marathon. The packet pick-up was organized and efficient. They provided 100% recycled technical running shirts. They healthy living expo was small, but it was the second year for this event. I am sure more vendors will get involved. I really enjoyed the pasta dinner with Joan Benoit Samuelson as the keynote speaker. The location for the race in downtown High Point at Showplace proved to be a perfect choice. They just need to make sure there are plenty of portable toilets. I would definitely run this race again; it gets a strong recommendation.
