The course was an eight-loop, flat, u-shaped trail along the shore. This was a great course for the weather; it was extremely windy, but you knew exactly where the worst of it was. Not many spectators out in the conditions, but it was wonderful to pass through the arcade, which was full of people cheering and clapping.

This first-time event was well organized and run. The course was well marked and very flat, with well placed water stations. A scenic route through the heart of Asbury Park and on the boardwalk along the ocean. The host hotel (Berkley) was very accommodating. There were lots of cheering spectators in the relay team transition zones (I ran as a team of one). This was a great event and I hope to run it again in the future.

From the registration to the finish line, this marathon was wonderful. The weather was the only question mark and it was better than the forecast. This was a flat, eight-loop race that ran past the Atlantic Ocean and inland canals - plus you were able to catch the re-gentrification of a seashore town, which has a great future.

Two well placed water and snack stops that were supervised by the nicest volunteers made it a pleasant run.

"Excellent First-Year Marathon" (about: 2009)

I have completed 58 marathons and rate this among the best in spite of extreme weather, with two northeast storms back to back, causing 35-mile-per-hour gusts and a constant 25-mile-per-hour wind. The race was extremely well organized and runner-friendly. The race director was out on the course, setting up mile markers that were constantly being knocked over by the winds. The aid stations were well manned and had plenty of water, real Gatorade, GU, and various energy snacks. I have never run an eight-lap race, but this course was nicely laid out and did not get boring. I highly recommend this race for a BQ, as it is fast and flat.

"Outstanding first-year marathon." (about: 2009)

This was the first year of this event (and my 58th marathon), staged on a weekend that saw two northeaster major storms strike the area. The boardwalk stretch ran straight into 30- to 35-mile-per-hour winds. In spite of this, the event was excellent. The finish line was moved indoors, and the covered area provided an area for spectators and transitions for the marathon relay. The race director could be seen throughout the event setting up mile markers that had been blown down by the winds. The two water stops were perfectly situated for the eight loops, had plenty of Gatorade and water (plus GU and a variety of other energy snacks), and were manned throughout the race in spite of the adverse weather. The eight loops were laid out in such a way that they were far from boring and provided a timing challenge for the runners. In nice weather, this course will be fast and a joy for participants and spectators alike. I plan to return!

"Not bad" (about: 2009)

This was this race's first year. It was a nice and easy start. Easy to get to, easy packet pickup, and easy parking, so bonus there. The course itself was ok. It's flat, but relatively boring, though for a team relay, it shouldn't really matter. I was a team of one, so eight loops got boring. The amenities were nice. My only major complaint is the finish. I had to stop dead from running 26.2 miles! This is tough, I normally walk around a bit. I didn't have that option. There was no water, no bananas, no bagels.
It was WINDY on the boardwalk, but that is totally out of the race organization's control. The volunteers were AWESOME!

Not sure I would do it again solo, but I would come back as part of a relay team. Just get some food and water at the end for next year, please.

"Cold, rain and wind made for one tough marathon" (about: 2009)

The race director did an excellent job (as always) - too bad the weather was so lousy! I didn't know how running eight loops was going to feel - and at a few points I have to say that it was difficult running past my car knowing that I'd have to face the wind gusts along the boardwalk.

It was a nice break to run through the convention center (after most of the run along the boardwalk) and the crowds there were energetic.

The volunteers were the BEST ever - especially considering that they were standing out in the cold.

The rewards for completing this marathon were bragging rights (facing the horrible weather conditions), and a beautiful tech t-shirt, hat and medal.

Let's hope for better weather next year!!

"Probably Better as a Relay; Hence the Name" (about: 2009)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Asbury Park Relay Marathon

Let me start by saying there is nothing any race director can do about the weather. The cold, rain, and wind that others might complain about is just the breaks.

This was a decent first-time race. The flat course was clearly marked and the police and cones were in the right places to keep cars away. For those running it as a relay, the transition was in a great spot - under cover and warm. The two aid stations that runners passed each of the eight times around were well stocked, and the volunteers were very supportive.

There are a few things I'd like to see next time, though. There was no bag check. For those running the full marathon, having warm, dry clothes nearby is very helpful. Those with a team probably had teammates manage their clothing.

Also, the race-day number and packet pick up was great, but I felt bad for the sole lady who was left to manage all three tables that morning.

While I also don't expect a smorgasbord at the end, the post-race food at the finish line was rather sparse. I'd like to give the organization 3.5, but I'd rather round up.

Again, because of the lousy weather, there were very few spectators. However, the transition station was very loud each time through.

Last, I would have liked to run in the opposite direction, going clockwise. Coming up the boardwalk, the windiest part of the course, was very tough with the wind in your face.

I will most likely be back, though. Those items that I thought could be better do not make this event a poor one. Those close to a BQ time might be able to get it here because of the flat terrain.
