"Beautiful Course but organization needs some work" (about: 2014)

I have now run this race three times and it has been one of my favorites&. until this year. The first year I ran it (2010) there was a lot of attention to detail, David Lee (the race director) sent out informative emails on a regular basis, giving encouragement and updates on the everything from the course condition to the weather and while the expo wasnt big it had neat little touches. For instance in the drop bag there were gloves and other fun things plus they gave out homemade cookies. The race was well supported they knowledgeable volunteers on the course and water stops were well stocked and well-spaced. The finish medals and awards were made from handmade pottery. This year however there was hardly any communication from David even in the week before the race. The expo was basically pick up your packet and shirt and we were given race bags dated 2013. On the course the waters stops were placed very sporadically, for instance, the first water stop was at two miles but the cups were shot glass size and there wasnt another water stop for 4 miles. When I asked why the cups were so small, I was told someone forgot to get the cups. It was not unusual to have the water stops 3 miles or longer apart and the cups sizes varied from water stop to water stop. The finish the medals were inexpensive and not original at all. The only reason I am making these comments is I love this course and this race and I think David is a good guy but it just seems like this race could be so much better than it has become this past year with more attention to detail. Having said all this I do plan to run this race again hoping for a better experience &.. while the course is challenging it was one of the prettiest anywhere and the volunteers were still first class.

"Really great small event." (about: 2013)

Hope these comments help, a bit about myself: I entered the race with the intention of getting a BQ. If you want or need massive crowd support and other runners, this is not the race for you. If you want a fantastic small race, a great (unusual) course, and wonderful personalized organization, this IS the race for you. Few spectators, but those are encouraging. Every detail is attended to: many water and Gu stations, excellent post race. Luxury buses to the start. Beautiful scenery. Challenging course, but with the potential to be fast if you run it right.

"Well-done, not as fast as it looks." (about: 2013)

What a nice, well-organized race. Good pasta dinner and number pickup. Nice warm coaches with bathroom that took us to the start line and stayed until the race started. That was important this year as it was really cold (low 20's) and we stayed warm on the buses.
This is a fast, pretty course, but you must train for downhills. It looks very fast on paper but because it's a rough, rocky gravel road, not as fast as you might expect. Still, a most excellent race with great organization. However, If you need spectator support or bands every mile, this isn't the race for you.

A beautiful fast course that will leave you very sore and happy. 4 min PR for me and I loved loved the course. If you need crowd support this is not the race for you. Only negitive thing, hated the last 1/2 mile thru the camp grounds! I will run this again

My hat goes off to David for organizing this perfect race: perfect instructions, super efficient packet pickup, buses to the start, aid stations and signage on the course, volunteers super helpful. Gorgeous run in the mountains through the woods, away from the crowds and cars, you have to stop a few times just to enjoy the cascades and rivers! Tough but fast - fast but tough. a prime celebration at the finish line, superb atmosphere. Did I mention that the organization is perfect? David is one of the best race directors I have met. Thank you and your volunteers, so much.

Great race. Great organization. Wish the out and back at 6 miles was a little longer so the finish could be as soon as you leave the road. Running through the cars to the finish is brutal. Make sure you train for the race. The hurricane messed with the weather this year

"Beautiful course;down hill hard on legs" (about: 2012)

Race was well organized and food and support was great; course seemed rockier and ruttier than previous times and warmer also which made my legs very sore after down hill and had to walk run last 7 miles which I rarely do in a marathon; Surpassed my goal in training but missed it by 8 minutes in race. Even with that its one of my favorite marathons and I will be back again next year!

I am glad I was able to get in and made the trip for this one. The downhill part of the course is tough for a few reasons: 1) keeping yourself paced and steady, 2) Slipping on loose gravel/dirt (I almost fell once) 3) running the 'good lines' (there are a lot of curves and switchbacks, so you will run 'extra'. I'm pretty good about running the shortest lines & I still added almost 1/2 mile to the 26.2 distance.)
Also be aware the last 8 miles are more rolling hills then just a 500ft elevation drop, and after 18 miles downhill any hill seems like a 'big' hill.
Overall I would highly recommend this race for anyone looking for a nice quiet marathon that is very different from the huge city races most of us run.

If you can drive the course before hand it will help. One other suggestion if you are looking to do this race - I searched and was able to find a cabin to rent for the weekend- it was 5 min. from the start and about 15 min. away from the finish. It was a bit more then a hotel room, but we brought our own food (no eating out) and it had beuatiful views and was very relaxing.

"A fun fast well organized small marathon." (about: 2012)

A fun fast very well organized small marathon with a personal touch. Fast course IF smartly run. Gave the course 4 stars for the fact there was much more med/lg gravel & uneven surface than expected on the hard packed dirt road. It made for some sore feet and treacherous footing at times. Aid stations & volunteers were great. Not many spectators but that is expected through a national forest with a small marathon so no complaints. The spectators that were out get 5 stars. The downhills will beat your body up & temps were warmer than normal but I BQ'd & PR'd so I'm happy. Would definitely recommend this race.

Be prepared for dirt roads with a lot of rocks and dips from runoff. The leaves were beautiful (however I was looking down most of the time to keep from tripping!) and many times I was running by myself. Being that the race is in the middle of nowhere, there weren't any spectators aside from the volunteers at the few water stations and the cars passing by. But I must say they did a great job cheering us on! As I said, the road is not closed so be prepared to move over and breathe dust for awhile. The downhill really makes the miles go by fast, I actually was finally looking forward to an uphill stretch! No bathrooms along the way. The finish area was small but in a beautiful location. Also, bring the Dramamine for the ride to the start. This felt like a really nice small community event. I'm glad I ran it for my NC race.
