"Nice Course, But Extremely Poor Organization" (about: 2006)

The day of the marathon was very poorly organized. The half-hour delay at the start line was unacceptable. I recognize that events can be challenging but having only a very few mile markers on the course and several water stops with no volunteers was nothing more than poor planning. There wasn't even a sign at the marathon and half marathon turn. Runners were sent the wrong way due to uninformed volunteers and no signage. I can understand few spectators but this marathon was billed to have music throughout the course and there was one duo performing on the whole course. Where was the finish-line clock? The course was great and I also thought Saturday evening's dinner was nice. The keynote speaker was excellent, along with the finisher medal. This marathon has so much potential but my guess is that non-runners were managing the event. The biggest flaw was the absence of numerous mile markers and lack of aid stations. Due to the lack of organization I was thankful I didn't bring my entire running club.

"DEAL OR NO DEAL?!" (about: 2006)

"NO DEAL" is the best that can be said for this sub-par marathon. The organization at best missed all of the extremely important points like double checking the course to be sure every water station was staffed. There was no staffing between about 9 miles and 14 miles. They promised gels on the course - none. They promised ice on the course - none and it was a hot, high altitude, sunny day - thank you for the 2nd degree burns without relief.

As for amenities missed.... They promised 5-mile interval timing - there was not even a clock at the finish line. Mile markers were way off or non-existent. And, if the printed map is correct, we ran about .9 miles too far on race day - or more or less (one cannot be sure, as the overall race was so sloppy). Based on my time it was about a mile long. They ran short of medals - "because they were broken." They started 30 minutes late. And a fast course - checkout the winner's finish time... another indication of either the difficuly of the course, or length or both!

This was my 15th marathon in the past 12 months - there have been some wonderful small marathons but this was not one. If you want a Reno race go to the Silver State in August - it is less expensive and fun. If you want a May race - go to Vancouver or Avenue of the Giants for two early May races that appreciate runners and the effort it takes to get to a race. As the saying goes, "Deal or no deal" - this is a NO DEAL.

"Better luck next year" (about: 2006)

I will give this race a couple of things. The scenery through the course was amazing. The people at the aid stations were very helpful and energetic and I saw somebody in a van drive by and offer the runners Gatorade. The part that made me want to quit the run was the sheer lack of organization. The run started late, there were "water stations" that looked like somebody had dropped off a case of bottled water and left. I hate to be the one to point this out, but there were more than 24 runners. I went 6 miles with out water, which shouldn't have happened because the site showed an operating water station every couple of miles. Distances were not clearly marked; I didn't see a marker for 5 miles, then another 4 after that coming back. The course didn't remain closed either. There were points toward the end that I was dodging traffic if I didn't want to rub my leg on the curb. In the end, all I could think about was the medal, but when I got there they told me they had run out. Seriously?!? In the end, this race has a lot of potential. I would probably run it again if the organization was improved.

"miles 8-12 had no water" (about: 2006)

First Marathon

Starting 30 min. late was frustrating, and not having water at miles 8-12 was upsetting. I will probably not enter this race again. That is too bad because Reno really needs an event like this.
