"'True grit' starts here" (about: 2005)

This is a challenging course. If you looking for a flat and fast course, look elsewhere. The first five or six miles are through Baylor University. Then the course follows trails and roads to the airport and dam area. The three miles on top of the dam gives you plenty of time to think. After a couple of miles after the dam you turn into the park. Then the run begins. Couple of the hills are long and steep. Very few runners make it to the top without walking. But, crossing the wood planked bridge to the finish line gives one a feeling of complete satisfaction. If you want to prove your 'true grit,' you will do it here.

The only negative I found was starting at approximately mile 18. Course marking were very poor or missing. Several times it was very difficult knowing which way to turn. But I'm sure they will have this corrected.

Overall, this is a great marathon. This is what running is about. I enjoyed it and will do it again.

"Awesome but challenging" (about: 2005)

This is a truly a beautiful course to run. It winds through Baylor University, then along numerous hike and bike trials along the river. No word of warning though can do justice to the hills at the end of the marathon. There are only 3 or 4 but they are steep and will bring the best runners to a near walk. Course was marked very well except for around the 21/22 mile area.. then it was partically a scavenger hunt to look for the arrows. All in all, it was a great fun and the finish across the pedestrian bridge was fabulous. Would definitely do it again.

"If I weren't injured, I would be back this year!" (about: 2004)

One of the most scenic Texas marathons besides those done on trails. Through the Baylor University campus, across the Lake Waco dam, and through the biggest municipal park in Texas (as well as one of the prettiest), the course was easy & mostly flat until the last 6 miles or so and then WATCH OUT! I recommended that they reverse the course for 2005. Electrolytes were scarce, but they figured that out near the end of the race and started handing out bottles of Gatorade to the runners from their vehicles. This was the first year and considering all that, they did a great job. Sponsored in part by M&M Mars -- Marathon Bars at every aid station! Attendance was scant since it's early in the season and it was a first-year event.
