"Needs an improvement in organization" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I did this marathon and I was quite disappointed at the lack of assistance for foreigners. Nobody spoke english or french which made it difficult to get help when I had a problem. Hope this improves in the future.

"A well-run small race with few spectators." (about: 2001)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

The Turin Marathon included about 2000 runners. The course started in the city but quickly moved into charmless suburbs and small towns, and passed factories and large stores as well as the centers of the towns. The spectators were often sparse, except for a few towns that had turned out in force with welcoming bands. Some spectators were very supportive but many just seem to cheer for people they knew. There is only one serious hill, but it is steep and seemed to run from about km 16 to km 21. Then the course heads for many miles along a wide street into Turin with some supportive spectators. The police did a good job keeping back the angry motorists who wanted to get across. Returning to central Turin, the race goes past many of the important sights. However, running on pedestrian malls of large stones was uncomfortable and shoppers were not kept separate from the runners, at least when we four-hour folk arrived. The pedestrians at that point seemed totally oblivious to the race. The final run by the Po River leads back to the start.
Organization was good, with water stops every 5k, with both cups and bottles of water, Gatorade and other choices, and many volunteers. The only problem was no toilets anywhere on the route.

A Runner from Brussels, Belgium (4/3/2001)
"A nice run in the North of Italy." (General Comments)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

The run is nice, but it's not an easy one: the first half is going up hills and the second half is going down hills. The people are very supportive (Italians do it better). One remark is that you need to speak the native language because -almost- no one speaks English...
