"Nice course, but get up front to avoid the walkers" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Ran the full anticipating a 7:30 average pace. Corral wrist bands were "on your honor" at the expo. Start was a mess. I got stuck back with the 12:00 pace runners and it was a mess for 3-4 miles. Also, shuttle bus back to Union Square was a joke. There was a one-hour wait in the rain and many were stranded. RD needs to advertise that Muni goes to the finish and take that for only $3.00. I realize it was a big TNT event, but it got annoying dodging the walkers who started up front. Need to do colored bibs like NYCM and patrolled corrals.

Course is beautiful though. Aid stations and volunteers are extremely helpful and there were plenty of them.

"The start needs to be in waves" (about: 2010)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon

The start was horrible! Everyone was cut loose all at once. You need to start in waves of the timed groups with a 3 to 4 minute separation. We were cattle, bumping into everyone, not able to run our pace due to slower runners upfront and people tossing clothes to the side, but unfortunately there was nowhere where there were no people. Runners were on the sidewalks, etc.

"Not worth the hype!" (about: 2010)

I totally agree with the previous post. Having run marathons and halves in major cities with big sponsors and small-town races with few spectators, I was very disappointed in this race! I will say that they allowed me to switch from the full to the half as I am running another marathon in 3 weeks and I'm glad I didn't waste all my energy on this race!

Considering how much they spend to advertise and promote this woman-power thing, you'd think things would be clearly marked as there seemed to be more first-time walkers/runners here.

Top disappointments:
Too big of a race not to have starting corrals. All the TNT people were in huge packs and it was hard to get into the area.

Baggage drop off. Why not do it the way all other races do it? Just have buses/drop-off areas organized by the last number of your bib. Don't make people hunt around frantically at 6:30 a.m. trying to find an open window on a bus to get a sticker from, hoping you'll see your stuff at the end.

Mark areas at the start and end! Start of the race, where bathrooms are, shuttles, etc... simple. Spend the money on signs, not big, bright spotlights in the morning.

Costly shuttle buses!! I found it insane to have to pay 15 bucks for a shuttle and then heard there were hour-long lines! Take the public bus back for 2 bucks.

Tracking???!! As a huge race with many first-time people, you'd think a major sponsor like Nike would offer athlete tracking. Nope.

To sum it up, very disappointing. Glad I didn't do the full; I would have also have been disappointed if this were my first race, as it was disorganized and very hilly (that is, mountainous)!

"Expo a Disappointment" (about: 2010)

I was really excited to get into the Nike Women's Marathon. The idea of running a race with the majority of participants being women and for such a great cause was exciting. However, I was extremely unimpressed with the expo. There was nothing there. Most expos have vendors selling running essentials. Also, in my opinion, the half marathoners should have begun before the full marathoners (i.e. half-hour headstart). As usual people did not slot themselves according to pace and shortly after starting I ran into walkers who should have been at the back with other walkers. Also, many of the racers had poor race etiquette and did not shoulder check before passing and/or run to the side on the hills to let others pass. On a positive note, the course was beautiful and I really like the finisher shirt; however, I don't think I should have had to run the race to get the shirt - the necklace yes, but the shirt no. I would run the race again, but only the half.

"Better than what most people say" (about: 2010)

OK. I'm a dude and I didn't run this with Team in Training. So, I think I have a good perspective as an "outsider." First of all, I didn't run this for the necklace (OK, it made my wife happy) or the hot pink finisher's shirt (OK, it made my daughter happy). Nonetheless, the support on the course was awesome. The first half is the most scenic and also the most difficult. Lots of hills. There are no cable car hills, but you begin to wonder if the entire course is uphill. The second half is pretty flat and you do get to see quite a bit of the Pacific Ocean. Pretty cool if you live in Oklahoma. Lots of support along the way. The pacers are awesome and they don't care if you're a guy or a girl, just so you finish strong. I wasn't as impressed with the firefighters as many of my fellow runners were, but I saw quite a few swoons by the ladies at the end. Yeah, there were walkers at the start that line up in the wrong pen, but that happens in every race. It's no big deal if you do the full. Consider it your warmup. I started slow, but still finished under 4 hours. I would do this race again.

"Loved the Marathon" (about: 2010)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This is my first marathon and I enjoyed it a lot. Loved the gospel group outside the Ferry Building and would have liked to have seen them again toward the end. Enjoyed the swag toward the end and thought it was well organized. Would like to exchange my finisher's t-shirt but can't figure out how to contact anyone. Email on contact page doesn't work.

"Tiffany - NOT Nike - disappointing" (about: 2010)

1 previous marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I finished the marathon (full) in plenty of time; however, I was very disappointed to be handed a Tiffany's box that included a necklace from 2007 and was shortly handed a note that told me my finisher's necklace would be mailed to me in 3 weeks. Also, I don't feel half marathoners should have received the same gift. Sad ending to a great day!

"Course definitely designed for half marathoners" (about: 2010)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon

This race received so much hype, but did not live up to its standards. It's very commercialized, given that it's run by Nike. There were so many walkers and people stopping in the middle of the race to take pictures, while other walkers were texting and just getting in the way. Nike needs to have a later start for walkers. The support was not impressive and the website offered little information. For those running this race next year, do not buy the $10 shuttle ticket! You will wait in line forever. Take the #5 bus into town. It's free! This race is all about Nike making money. I will never run it again.

"Great race; where are results?" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 6+ Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 4

I ran the full marathon and it was a great race as always. I've run it since it started in 2004. This year it was raining in the end but it made for a fast time to have it cooler. Nike always puts up a well organized race and the Tiffany's necklace is a nice treat. Poor firefighters got wet in their tuxes today.

The website is horrible again, and again Nike couldn't get any results online. How can it be so difficult to post results that have been timed with a timing chip? Even much smaller races (and much larger ones) manage to do this in real time, not within days. Hence my 2-star rating for organization.

Get a better website and post the results right away!!!!

"Best half marathon ever!" (about: 2009)

3 previous marathons | 2 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I've run the full marathon on this course twice and the half marathon 3 times. Hands down, this is the best running event of the year. The Tiffany necklace is my motivation along with the opportunity to get together with my best friends for the weekend.

The half marathon course is beautiful and I agree - it's not worth doing the full only to get to the halfway point, see everyone celebrating and then realize you have another 13 miles to go.

And for everyone who says they won't run this event again, please don't! There will be more spots open for the rest of us. For the last two years I have missed out getting in through the lottery, but I manage to gain entry through Nike+ challenges throughout the year.

I love this race! And I love that they encourage walkers to participate.
