"First marathon, hometown, what an experience!!!" (about: 2004)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I just finished my very first marathon. I am still numb. A good numb. I wanted my first one to be special, and it was. Right here in my own backyard. Everyone was so help full from the volunteers in the parking lot, to the guys handing out chips, people walking by asking if I needed anything. I must have looked a little obvious, as a first timer. The park is beautiful.

While we missed the full color of fall, it was still something running along the river and through the woods. The fans were amazing. Braving the cold and wind. Everyone giving encouragement. Calling out your number or catching your name from friends or family. Even remembering it next time around. That was awesome.

The finish was something. My kids (Cassidy & Carter) came out and ran the last 20 yards. We finished holding hands - or were they holding me up? The staff at the end was amazing also. The lady putting the medal over my head and looking into my eyes and saying 'You did it!' That was cool. I did do it and I will do it again. This will become an annual thing for me. My hometown marathon. Great job, Don!!!!!

Some logistics problems caused a 20 minute delay to the start. Due to the way the course was laid out, runners were meeting other runners several times on the course and no one to guide who should be on the left and who should be on the right. Can't find online results. However, a wonderfully flat, scenic course. Great aid stations and lots of encouraging spectators along the way. This run definitely has potential.

This was the most organized race I have ever run in. The staff/volunteers were the best I've ever seen. Every single person involved was AWESOME and strived to make it a great day for all involved. Mission accomplished!!!! I intend to run this one every year it is available. Beautiful course as well, especially since they removed the wall at the 18th mile!! Much appreicated. Thanks again guys. You are the best!!!! Also, thanks to all the 'little helpers' who were passing out food and picking up our cups. They made me smile every time. :-)

I'm going on a few years now that I have run this great race in Grand Rapids. I love coming back to see Grand Valley State University, nice college. I can't wait for what is going to happen when I complete for the 10th year. Great course, loved the chili dogs after the race. Warm showers right at the finish line, over did it... thanks.

This was the best! Great course, great crowds, nice weather, great organization...I especially liked the fact the race paid for everyone's hotel rooms, and offered free one-hour messages after the race. I'll definitely be back.

"Great fun; just drifted along with no effort." (about: 2004)

Great fun, course easy, aid stations many, registration smooth, didn't hit the wall, just floated along with little effort and finished strong with a PR. I'd like to run this one again! All in all, a real dream of a race...

Hey, maybe it was a dream since the race hasn't been held yet...
