 "Friendly Small Town Marathon" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I like small town runs and this was no dissapointment. The people were so friendly though not many out on the course except the water tables because it ran out into the country. I lot of nice touches, the 'Yeehaw' start, the homemade pasta dinner in the local church, the free pancake breakfast post-run, the horseback patrol checking on us. The course had more hills than I thought it would, but it is was run in the Flint Hills region of the state so I should have guessed. This was a well organized run, nice town and we got to spend a day in the Eisenhower Memorial/Library/Museum at a reduced rate. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Unseasonably hot day, but the race was very well-organized and super volunteers. The course is pretty much a straight out and back along rural highways (closed, thankfully). Very little shade, and not much to look at, but if you're used to training in those conditions, it's not bad at all. With only about 200 people doing the full-marathon, by the time you pass the halfway turnaround, you're likely to be running alone most of the way. I like that, but might not be for everyone. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Let me preface by saying that I definitely didn't 'have it' for this race. (Simply put, I wasn't really in the mood to run.) This was the first marathon I've run (out of 26) that started earlier than scheduled! Not cool. The weather was insane, which is obviously out of anyone's control. It was so humid that the roads were wet. The headwind felt great but being an out-and-back course, 13miles worth was a bit frustrating to run against. The heat was just plain dangerous. As I witnessed a spectator collapse near the finish line, I knew it was just plain h.o.t. Once again, nobody's fault but it sure made it difficult to enjoy! The course was nice, rolling hills and lots of horses keeping watch over the runners. The portion in the park was nice: full of turns (and shade!) but all perfectly labeled. Organization and participant perks were fine with no complaints. If you are looking for a smaller event that fits into your race schedule, this one is fine. Thank you to the volunteers. I was humbled when a kind, 80-ish man asked if I was alright when I finished. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I really enjoyed this race, despite pretty bad weather conditions! With a 20 mph headwind for most of the first 13.1 miles, no PR here. When the sun came up, it got HOT, but unlike St. Louis and Evansville (IN), the race organizers were prepared. Great pre-race breakfast staffed by some wonderful volunteers. Water 'buffets' at every mile with snacks and sunscreen, horse patrols along the road, and a closed course really made the difference! The course starts/ends in town, and it's 13.1 miles out over rolling hills through Kansas prairie, around the cone, and back to the finish. A bandanna was included in the packet in case of dust storms, but thankfully, it was not needed. There was plenty of pancakes, bagels, fruit, etc., left for even those at the back of the pack. Nice tech shirt and medal. A BIG THANKS again to the great organization and awesome volunteers!! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 In 2011, it was very hot. I'm a slow runner anyway, and ran into the wind the first half of the out-and-back course. I was counting on the wind to push be back to the finish, but as soon as I turned around midway, the wind died down and it got miserably hot. I think it was 91 degrees when I crossed the finish line. I ended up crossing 15 minutes after course closing - but volunteers were still there cheering, and there were still pancakes waiting for me. The course was nice, and if it hadn't been so hot, it would have been a nice run. Race organizers and volunteers were great. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Loved the pasta dinner the night before. All homemade sauce and salad by a local family! The race started about 4 minutes early with no warning, so if you were in the porta-potty you were scrambling. Wish the route ran through the town instead of down the highway but it was a great view of the countryside! Awesome food afterward for all race finishers. Would've preferred a technical shirt for all racers (the 1/2 runners got cotton), especially for the price they paid. Overall, good, small-town race! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I ran the half at Eisenhower this year. It's a nice course, on a closed road, with a nice loop through a local park. Slightly uphill to the turnaround, then retracing back to the finish line. Overall great organization. The pancake and sausage breakfast were awesome. I got a huge PR on this course. Overall, just a really awesome race - a true, hidden, small-town gem that you should put on your calendar. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Great race for a first-timer! Very walker-friendly. The course was flat. Drink stations were plentiful, and the portable toilets were numerous and clean. An incredible group of organizers in a very supportive community. Spectators make up in enthusiasm what they lack in quantity. Terrific experience!! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was a great course! The uphill parts weren't too bad, and the downhill parts were the reward. The pasta dinner was just what every runner needed. The people serving the food and drinks were really pleasant and made everyone feel welcome. The only part that was stressful about this race was the portion that was run in the park. I didn't feel like we received real clear directions on which way to go once we entered the park. On the way out we (my friends and I) were told to go one way and others behind us were told to go another way. The same thing happened on the way back. Better/bigger sign placement or possibly more volunteers in this area would definitely help this situation. This was my 9th marathon and I set a PR! The weather was perfect and I liked the technical shirt we were given. By the way, I also think that friends should be able to pick up the medals for others if possible. | |

 "Great Small Race" (about: 2010)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The organization and support for this race were incredible, as the town embraced the runners and thanked us for being there. If you travel here, be sure to book a room early as there are only a few hotels. I stayed in Salina about a half-hour away, and it was still a breeze on race day to get there and park. Where else can you pull up in your car with less than a half-hour to go and find parking, clean bathrooms and food and drink! The pasta dinner at the church was great - thank you, Knights of Columbus. The pancake breakfast at the finish hit the spot. Thank you to all of the water stop people. The Boy Scouts even camped out to be there in the morning. The rural course was a bit rolling and at times a little lonely, but it is nice to see that we still have so many farms in this country. Be prepared to listen to the birds, smell the smells and enjoy a very peaceful run on a Saturday morning. I am from the East Coast and ran my fastest time in more than 10 years, so yes, the course is fast; 50-Staters, keep your eye on this one! |
