"Poor. VERY poor. Can you say ZERO stars?" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 1  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

Please let the Cape Cod Athletic Club take this race over and do it right! Poor organization, lack of volunteers, and unsafe course conditions. Need I say more? I think this may have been the race directors first event ever! Next time try a 5k first before jumping into the big leagues.

"Great Time, despite some wet conditions" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

The race was wet, then cold, then foggy....dry clothes never felt so good. However, the entire course was well marked and they stopped traffic every time. There was plenty of gaterade and food to follow. I read a post below about it being disorganized, but I saw none of that (I signed up for early start when I sent in my application) and my time was accurate (compared it to my watch at the end) and it was posted. The tshirt is great and the medal was very cool. I met a lot of great runners along the way. Thanks Paulie!

"What the heck...its winter in New England!" (about: 2003)

What a wild run! Mother nature threw everything she had at us...rain, fog, sleet, 38 degrees, a finisher medal to be proud of...I was even prouder to be running with so many enthusiastic racers. This is why I run marathons...its the people, its the conditions, its the finish line. Much better organization than prior years. This race has future promise if it remains personable.

"marathon running is not supposed to be easy" (about: 2003)

PLEASE! On any given day the weather is what it will be. As runners we only ask for a accurate course and proper directions. EVERYTHING else is gravy. In the old days they only got a time if that. As for cheering throngs, maybe you all should take up a different sport if you need that to feel satisfied. Besides look at the calendar this race is in FEBURARY in MASS. What do you expect Hula dancers?

"Hyannis gets better every year" (about: 2003)

In 2001 this race was the most maligned (ever?), in 2002 it wasn't bad, in 2003 it wasn't bad at all. Paulie puts a ton of effort into this race and it is very obvious. I did not do the early start this year and the crowd of 1/2 folks was no big deal. I paced a friend through his first mara here and it was an excellent experience for all. The t-shirt is excellent. The volunteers were excellent. The veggie soup was excellent. Rick & Dick are excellent. The water crossings were even excellent. Two complaints: Save bagels for 4 hour finishers and give the water stops vaseline (best I've seen is a board with post-it notes (blob in the middle) for EZ self service - Memphis 2002).

"Great First Marathon Experience!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

This was my first marathon ever. As far as I can tell, the RD did an excellent job. There was chip timing this year. More than enough water and gatorade at every aid station. Great after race food. Plenty of police and volunteers on the course directed where to go. Traffic was never a problem, it was always stopped.

The race did not start on time due to a lot of people arriving late. This turned out to be a good thing since the horrible rain stopped soon after the start.

The crowd itself was great too, for such a wet day. I was surprised how many people were watching the race. At one point, around mile 23 I believe, my throat was very dry (I had a cold), so I ate some snow. One of the spectators ran over with a bottle of water, which was very nice.

One annoyance about the course was a few deep puddles. The only way to avoid them was to run through equally deep snow. It was just bad luck with the recent snow fall, and the high temperatures this week.

The course was very flat. The 'hills' were virtually undetectable. Didn't hurt my pace at all, no extra effort required.

One thing that could have been an improvement was the mile markers. They were white signs placed on the side of the road. Due to the white snow, and the large mass of people, they blended in. They were easy to miss unless you were staring at the side of the road. One thing they could have done was just put a little red flag right next to them, to catch your eye.

All in all it was a great race. I'm glad I ran it as my first.

"Poorly Organized - Nice Course" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

The course was scenic and well done, but the race organizers seemed to have no clue how to do the race. Having done 29 marathons in 26 states, I have only seen one worse run marathon. I started early and turned in my time at the end. I even got a divisional medal, but my time wasn't even listed. The early start was a complete joke and was a manual signup five minutes before the start. The weather was good, but that is unusual. I did the race with a friend so he can vouch for my finishing. I would not do this one again.

"Poor follow through on race results" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 2

The race offered an early start but failed to post results for those that did. We were told to self time and to turn the time into the timing company which I did, yet I was not included in the results. Other runners that I met who also did this were not listed either. The race director then promised that I would receive a finishers certificate so I could have verification that I did run, but never bothered to send me one. The course is nice and was pretty well supported with plenty of water/aid stations. Since it is a small marathon, there are not a lot of spectators but that is to be expected at a marathon of this size. At this point, I am very disappointed in the management of the race since I spent a lot of money to come to Hyannis to run and don't even have a result or finishers certificate, or anything to verify that I completed the marathon.

"Lots of effort - OK Race" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

The RD definitely put in a ton of effort to make this race better than last year - the volunteers were great & even the weather cooperated, but trying to juggle early start, marathon, 1/2 marathon & 10K makes for a lot of confusion (especially if the RD routinely shoots from the hip). Not a great race, but for Feb. in MA (if you're not willing to travel) this is the only long show in town . . .
