"Poky has it all..." (about: 2008)

I picked this race as my 50th, and I'm glad I did. This race has it all: great race director, friendly volunteers, a downhill course that is manageable - and it's all delivered at a rock-bottom price. Excellent tech, long-sleeve shirt, duffel bag (with a 5-pound sack of spuds included), well-stocked and placed water stops (with Gu, fruit, and chilled water), clearly marked mile markers, and a great finish line area stocked with ice cream bars, a baked-potato bar, bread, cold drinks, and other goodies. Nicely done award trophies are given soon thereafter. Bus transport is easy and the race started promptly at 6:30. Mild temps through the first half with full sun (to your back) for the second half. Run it smart and you can put down a fast time; the course record was broken again this year and many repeat this for the well-deserved accolades it has received. Hotels in the area are inexpensive. Not a lot to do in Poky, but surrounding areas offer outdoor options close by.

Thanks to all for a terrific race and weekend.

And what a great day it was! Great weather, inspiring scenery, smiling volunteers, flawless organization! Oh, and those new women's t-shirts are the best! Thanks for yet another great event! See you next year at the 10th Poky Marathon!

"First race and very impressed" (about: 2008)

This was my first race experience (I ran the half) and everything was great. The course was great with plenty of aid stations. I was especially impressed with the number of friendly volunteers helping with everything from check-in to aid stations to the end celebration! The only detail I would have liked explained is how there are two mats that you cross before you are actually finished. Who knew? :)

First Marathon

The volunteers were terrific, everything flowed and was on time, and my kids had a blast with all of the family stuff at the finish. What a great day! This will become an anual event for my family.

Lots of aid stations; the volunteers are friendly and enthusiastic. I love this year's shirt for the women's finishers - it's a real running shirt with a women's cut! My husband and I have run the half marathon for the past few years. We liked that it started a mile back this year so we could run straight to the finish line rather than looping down 5th street and back up 2nd. Yaa hoo, that makes all the difference! The only downside: we've never liked that fact that the half starts so late. The 8:30 a.m. start means that by the time we get to the finish line, it's in the 90s and HOT.

"I really enjoyed the race and was happy to BQ." (about: 2008)

This course was almost exactly as advertised. The first half was very downhill and I was able to qualify for Boston in large part by running my fastest first half ever. The course was much more scenic the first half than the second. The support was great and the baked potatos at the finish were great. This was a good small race. I prepared by running long runs on a treadmill downhill and my quads never locked up. I would recommend this race. The altitude did not bug me very much, although I am from Houston, at sea level. The fans were great, but you should not expect very many (hardly any.)

I came back to my home town to run this marathon, and I wasn't disappointed. Everything is great, from the race director, to the course, to the volunteers, to the atmosphere at the finish. This will be on my schedule every year.

Well organized event. Great post-race party. It was nice that the marathoners were able to receive their awards first. Thank goodness for the people who came to cheer for their runner and followed the runner on the course since that was about all of the crowd support we had. Looked forward to seeing them along the route. The race director is a top-notch guy and should be commended.

Loved the race; may be back again. Glad the sun was at our backs.

"Great Marathon; Even Better Value" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Pocatello Marathon

This is a great marathon. The course is beautiful but challenging. You really have to manage your pace for the first 14 miles to save enough for the last 12.2. The organization is excellent and the volunteers were great; it is obvious that they take pride in running this event, from the top down. You can't beat the value of the long-sleeve technical shirt, gym bag, bag of potatoes and great post-run food for $45. The pre-race pasta dinner was good and also a good value. After the race is a time to celebrate. I think it's a good idea to encourage the runners (and their family) to stay for the awards ceremony (raffle and timing of bus schedule). It's a great party atmosphere and adds to the fun. I strongly recommend this marathon.

"Good solo running; definitely cool schwag" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Pocatello Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This marathon is for the type of person who likes to run alone and doesn't need the constant cheering from fans. From miles 3-26, I saw and passed only two other runners.

But I felt like royalty when I reached the aid stations because I was the only runner there! All the volunteers cheered and offered plenty of water and Gatorade, and sometimes fruit or Gu. And there were PLENTY of aid stations (maybe even too many?).

The course is virtually all downhill. This is not as easy as you might think. But, if you train properly (i.e., make sure some of your long runs are downhill continuously), then you'll have a great run!

Cool things: the awards were nice and I like the duffel bag and potato sack. The race shirt is a unique fit. The bread at the end was perfect nourishment. The free showers were soooo nice. (Can we get access to the pool for next time?) Also, we have FREE access to the race pics!!

Indifferent: The pre-race dinner was unimpressive, and I thought the post-race potato bar was kind of gross (good idea though, and the servers were VERY friendly).

Bad things: I got off course near the end. I followed traffic cones into a parking lot, but thankfully a helpful citizen directed me back to the course.

All in all, it was a great time!
