"7 Boston Marathons run, they keep getting BETTER!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my 35th marathon, my 7th Boston, and for the 2nd consecutive year I set a marathon PR running this race. The race just gets better, and though at 40 I don't know how many more of these I will get to run, I enjoy each and every one like a visit to a precious friend. The course has become a friend and so are those who put this race on though I have never met them. Liked the narrower starting bins...made for better start once you hit the mats. Also the changes to the athlete's village were nice and that gets better every year as well. As always the crowds define the course, and I loved every step. Can't wait to see you again next year.

"Time of my life!!!" (about: 2002)

April 15, 2002 is a day I'll never forget. This was my first Boston and only my third marathon, yet the third time was a charm because it was the most incredible experience! I accomplished both of my personal goals--breaking 3 hours and enjoying the entire experience. The crowds were AMAZING throughout the entire course and the organization was superb. I will always remember turning onto Boylston...what an awesome feeling. I thank God for the opportunity to have participated in such an awesome race! Thanks to the BAA for all of their hard work!!!

"An Amazing Experience" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first Boston Marathon and it was absolutely an amazing day. It was extremely difficult and was a long day. The wait in the morning at Hopkinton was, in of itself, exhausting. I wonder if is really necessary to have to board the buses in Boston at 6:30AM? I cannot say how incredible the crowds were- and they stay to see everyone and cheer until they cannot speak! Boston fans were amazing- and you really do need the encouragment- even when you see the Citigo sign there is still a long way to go! The organization was superb. I hope to have the privledge to run this again.

"What is all the hoopla about?" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

For me, the negatives in this race almost outweight the positives. There are the hours of waiting around in Hopkinton, with very little to do. The long lines for the port-a-johns got to be figuratively and literally a real pain. The degree of crowding at the start and at the finish were distressing. Claustrophobia was a tangible feeling. The race course is a fast course, but the downhill nature of it is hard on the quads. The shirt is nice, and so is the medal, but they are fairly standard. Getting food and drink at the finish? Forget it! For the 4 hour runners (I was 4:00:23) the streets were so crowded as to be virtually impassable. I have no plans to return to this race anytime soon.

"The Granddaddy Of Them All" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Boston was the most fiendishly difficult marathon I've ever raced, and I've done NYC(4) and Chicago(2). In hindsight, those two marathons don't hint at the difficult terrain that is Boston, but once you cross that finish line, you know you just accomplished something very special indeed. The organization of the expo was first-rate and the crowd support was the very best. Everyone out there shows such respect, passion, caring, and concern for the runners and it is truly inspiring. I would like to qualify for this race every year.

My first Boston I touched the girl's hands at Wellesley College, I listened to men who were hoarse from screaming encouragement attempt yet again to cheer us on, I was moved by the shear enormity of support and unwavering emotion showered upon us by hundreds of thousands, I was humbled again and again by the sight of others at once flying by me, and then,on the hills, the sight of the broken, and the crushed, showing no signs of recovery, I saw Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, and finally the Citgo sign. You have to be there to understand the pride. You finish and now you are a runner no more, you are a marathoner. Boston, it's just so awesome.

"Hard Course...the best Marathon there is." (about: 2002)

Flawless organization. Incredible fan support the WHOLE way. Fistfuls of Powergel, oranges and anything you need were everywhere. A hard run but worth the extra effort.

"Boston is Awesome!" (General Comments)

I love this marathon! I love the city! It's my favorite marathon to run and my favorite U.S. city to visit. The run itself is so incredible for so many reasons...the support along the way is way cool, running point to point from Hopkinton to Boston is way cool, and Athlete's Village is BEYOND way cool. I felt like an Olympian of sorts walking into the village my first year running Boston (2000). I was nervous and didn't know what to expect with all the hype heard about the 'Boston Marathon.' But that's what made it so great at the same time. In fact, even though the weather wasn't ideal with the cold and the headwinds I was just happy to be there, running THE marathon. I think it's a combination of the people, the course, the organization and the city that makes Boston so memorable and a marathon that marathoners want to do again and again. This will be my third year running Boston and my seventh marathon and by far it's the best of them all. I agree that the course is pretty tough, but I think it expects its runners to rise to the occasion...and I think most do! My PR's have been in Boston both years and I hope to get another one this year. Carpe Diem!

"MARATHONERS DREAM" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I have run boston 8 consecutive years. I have ran a couple other, but without a doubt, boston is the superbowl of all marathons. I've struggled up heartbreak hill many a times, but with the urging of the crowds that don't thin out for 26.2 miles I climbed to the top of not just the hill, but the world. If you run, you must attempt this beautiful course. Myself, I have no idea when I will stop running this event.
