"A nice long run......." (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

My friend and I ran this race in 2002.We both enjoyed the run and we agreed that it wasn't the best marathon in any category but nobody ever said that it was. It's a good course with a nice hill at the end and a few water stations but the scenery was nice and the folks running it were nice, too. This is a good marathon for those runners who run marathons just for the challenge of the marathon and it's completion. There are no annoying spectators,no fanfare at the finish,no live bands to spur you on...nothing like that just trees and birds and the mountian.

"Micro Marathon" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

Just over 100 finishers makes this a micro marathon. But it was well organized for such a small race. Good water and traffic control. Weather was a little warm so I was glad I brought water for myself, but there was adequate water for normal conditions. The course is a bear. Very pretty and low key loops around the reervoir to start, then you head out to the roads around mile 10. Pretty scenic country back roads looping around Mount Tom leading to a 2 mile straight ahead uphill finish.

Very nice finishing medal and club finishing photos posted on the marathon web site. A HUGE buffet at the end provided all the real food I could possibly handle.

I'd run it again and recommend it to anyone other than first timers. It's a great 2nd marathon.

"Great Small Race" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

Was my first 26.2 and would have gone for flatter course but wanted something closer to home. First eight or so miles, looping around beautiful reservoir under Mt. Tom, were nice way to ease in. Course was fine until the last four miles (all uphill getting steeper as it goes) which killed my time. Well organized (good volunteers) and the informality and small size were refreshing.

"2 thumbs up" (about: 2002)

Enjoyed the race. It's well organized and run, course is decent (like the trips around the lake). The last couple miles are a little challenging but not terrible. Plenty of water stations. Nice buffet following the run. Would recommend and will do it again.

"Great low key marathon" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

This was my first marathon, so it is hard to compare it to the Mega marathons, but I have done a number of road races. First off, don't expect a lot of extras here. Basically it is a great race with NO frills, except the food. Awesome buffet after the race. My friend and I both ate our fill (my friend didn't run, but they didn't mind!). We're talking grilled chicken, meatballs, coldcuts, lasagna, potato salad, the works! I was amazed at the amount of great food! Next time I run this race I'm bringing a doggie bag! The course was well policed with enough manned water stops to get anyone through the race. The course is tougher than I expected. Nothing crazy, but by no means pancake flat. The end is tough with a steady climb the last two miles with a killer climb the last 1/2 mile. Still a great course, very little traffic, beautiful area. As for organization, lets face it, a huge amount of organization is not needed for a low key event such as this. Again no frills, showed up got my number, told me where to start. Got there, told us where to line up, then 'bang' we were off - just the way a race should be! A word of advice is bring some water and gatorade for yourself for after the race. Seems that there wasn't much at the end. No spectators except at the end and the volunteers along the course. Volunteers were top notch. They did their club proud.

Low key event, good race management and volunteer support! Nice course. Flat, rolling with downhills. The last couple of miles a good steady climb to the finish. The race has been going for 39 yrs!

"Cool course" (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

I ran this race more than twenty years ago when Susse Chalet was the sponsor and it was called the Holyoke Marathon. Maybe the course has changed but it ended going up Mt. Tom which made it hard to smile at the finish.
