(Blue Ridge Parkway Guide) Steve Cowie from Greensboro North Carolina won the forty-second annual Grandfather Mountain marathon with a time of 2 hours 46 minutes and 31 seconds. Cowie, a civil engineer, trained about one-hundred miles a week getting ready for the event.

Grandfather Mountain Marathon Couple who runs together stays together
(Chron.com) Ron and Karen Berglund plan to celebrate their thirty-fifth marathon on their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary at the 2008 Grandfather Mountain Marathon. The couple began walking marathons in 2004-2005. They ran three more marathons in 2005 and ten in 2006. To meet their 35th-anniversary goal, the couple had to run fifteen marathons in a year.

Hill Sets New Record to Win Grandfather Mountain Marathon
(GoBlueRidge.net) Garrick Hill won the Grandfather Mountain Marathon whose challenging course has runners gaining 3,000 feet in elevation throughout the race. Garrick set a new record time of 2:41:38, bettering his 2004 time by thirty-three seconds, followed by Ben Corona who was second in a 2:45:48 and Glen Mays who was third in a 2:47:22.

Patrick Wins Two Races in Three Days
(GoBlueRidge.net) Betsy Patrick won two of the first three events at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Patrick is the first woman to complete the 26.2-mile challenge Saturday after winning the five-mile hill climb called "The Bear" on Thursday night. Jen Gapin was second in 3:23:34 and Dulce Ntabella of Cary finished third with a time of 3:26:14.

Hill brothers win Grandfather Mountain Marathon
(Watauga Democrat) Kevin and Garick Hill, brothers originally from South Africa and now residing in Winston-Salem, won the Grandfather Mountain Marathon last Saturday, July 10. The brothers successfully planned to finish together and used the marathon to train for their next challenge, the Chicago Marathon, which they will also run together. Kelcey Lawson placed second in this, his fifth marathon, and Amy Fowler took third, after running the Boston Marathon earlier this year.
