2022 TCS New York City Marathon Women's Preview and Starter List

The big and sad news for the 2022 New York City Marathon was that the defending, 2021, champion Peres Jepchrirchir - who also held the fastest personal best in the field - had to drop from the starter list due to an injury sustained during training. That left the field open, but set up Goytom Gebreslase to be the overwhelming favorite. Gebreslase was the winner of the 2021 Berlin Marathon and followed that up with two sub 2:19 finishes already in 2022: a third place finish at the 2022 Tokyo Marathon in 2:18:18 and a win at the World Championships Marathon in 2:18:11 - with times like those and consistency, Gebresslase is the hands-down favorite.
Other women to watch include Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, a Kenyan-born athlete now competing for Israel, who finished third behind Gebreslase at the 2022 World Chmpaionships Marathon in 2:20:18. Salpeter holds the fastest personal best in the field with a 2:17:45 achieved at the 2020 Tokyo Marathon, so will definitely be in contention. Edna Kiplagat will be a dark horse favorite to win or podium at the 2022 New York City Marathon. Kiplagat, at 42 years old and the 2021 NYC Champion, continues to run strong (including a win at the 2021 Boston Marathon!) and has the experience to do something special. Rounding out the international field are Hellen Obiri, the two-time Olympic 5000M medalist, who will be making her marathon debut; Viola Chepto, the runner-up at the 2021 New York City Marathon; and Mao Uesugi of Japan with a 2:22:29 personal best from the 2022 Osaka Marathon.
The American field at the New York City Marathon is also especially strong for 2022. Leading the field will be Keiar D'Amato who set the American marathon record in Houston earlier in the year (only to see it beaten by Emily Sisson months later). D'Amato, who also holds the American 10-Mile record unsuccessfuly tried to improve her marathon time (2:19:12) at the Berlin Marathon and many are concerned that the quick turnaround from Berline to New York will be too difficult to allow D'Amato to run at full strength - we will see. Other Americans to watch include Sara Hall, who ran a 2:20:32 at a special elite race held amid the COVID lockdowns and was fifth at the 2022 World Championships. And of course Des Linden, the two-time Olympian and 2018 Boston Marathon champion is a consistent strong runner and does not seem to know how to quit.
