Race Information: Coeur d' Alene Marathon

Coeur d' Alene Marathon
May 28, 2006

Race Report by Bob Dolphin

For sixteen consecutive years, from 1987 to 2002, I had run the Coeur d' Alene Marathon, so I have warm feelings for this event. After an absence of four years, it was good to be a participant again.

This year the marathon and half marathon were scheduled for Sunday, May 28th, at 7:00 a.m. with packet pickup the day before at the Student Union Building on the North Idaho College campus.

From the years that I had run this marathon I remembered a warm and sunny second half, but this year the temperature was in the low 50's throughout the race and it rained (from drizzle to downpour). This was fine with me, and I enjoyed running cool from the start to the finish with the combined field of about 1,261 runners.

In the first two miles we ran by the Spokane River and Lake Coeur d' Alene on River Avenue, through City Park to Sherman Avenue and on to attractive, downtown Coeur d' Alene. At the 6th Street Junction, 950+ half marathoners turned to the right, and 311+ marathoners went to the left. Those of us who went left ran through attractive suburbs, a commercial area and then to rural suburbs on a nearly flat, rectangular course north of the city.

In the second half, we followed the lake shore on the Centennial Trail in a long out-and-back section with a major hill. The route was quite scenic with lake views, distant mountains, forest slopes, and a marina along the way. In the last four miles suburban housing, more lake views, the Coeur d' Alene Resort, and City Park were passed on the way to the finish line at the North Idaho College campus.

Jim Rucker, 27, of Spokane (running in his second marathon) was the winner with a time of 2:35:04. He had also won his first marathon, Two Bear Marathon at Whitefish, Montana, last year. Chuck Engle, 35, of Columbus, Ohio, was second with a 2:37:58. In third place (2:45:02) was Bryan Smith, 43, of Thibodaux, Louisiana, who runs a marathon every other week.

Julie Gilchrist, 38, of Ovando, Montana, was the women's winner with a 3:14:31. In second place (3:17:10) was Maria Berger, 32, of Missoula, Montana, and Jennifer Boyer, 47, of Huson, Montana, finished third (3:17:52).

The wheelchair division was won by Jerry Martin, 58, of Spokane Valley, Washington, with a time of 1:47:01. As a first-time marathoner, Tommy-Gun Wyant, 26, of Spokane finished second with a 2:16:45, and Scott Bailey, 36, of Spokane came in third (2:42:21).

My run went well, and my finishing time of 5:21:22 was six minutes faster than the previous week at sea level at the Capital City Marathon in Olympia, Washington. I was runner #294 of 311 to cross the finish line and first in the 75+ Male division.

Congratulations to our long-time friends who ran the inaugural Coeur d' Alene Marathon in 1977 and have run it every year. Because of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State in 1980, the race was canceled that year. Completing their 29th Coeur d' Alene Marathon on May 28, 2006 were Sylvia Quinn, 69, and her husband Pat Quinn, 72, of Spokane and Russ Akers, 73, and Mac Bohlman, 71, of Walla Walla, Washington.

On hand for the Sunday events were twenty Marathon Maniacs, and here's an update on what some of them did.

Chuck Engle, 35, of Columbus, Ohio, has a different type of string going. He plans to race a marathon every weekend in 2006. At Coeur d' Alene he ran his 22nd of the year as he stays on schedule. He not only runs a lot of marathons, he runs them well!! His remarkable record shows twelve wins, six second places, two third places, and one fourth place!! We hope he'll come to the Marathon Maniac Reunion to run the Yakima River Canyon Marathon on Saturday, March 31, 2007, in Central Washington.

Tim Bruce, 53, of Sequim, Washington, is training his daughters to be long-distance runners. Running in her first half marathon at Coeur d' Alene, Jennifer Bruce, 17, ran a 1:56:02 for third place of eleven in the 17-19F division. Christina Bruce, 14, ran her first marathon at the Yakima River Canyon Marathon on April 1, 2006 (4:17:53). In her second marathon she improved her time to 4:04:27 and finished first in the female division of 19 and under. She's the youngest female finisher of the YRCM and will become the youngest member of the Marathon Maniacs Club soon!

Ordinarily, Jack and Gunhild Swanson of Spokane would be running the marathon, but this year they made alternative plans. Jack is being treated for an illness and Gunhild is recovering from shoulder and foot surgeries, but that didn't keep them from being participants! They walked together in the half marathon and finished in 3:28:25. Congratulations!

Tony Phillippi, 44, of Tacoma, Washington, used the weekend as training for the upcoming Coeur d' Alene Ironman Triathlon. He swam in Lake Coeur d' Alene on Saturday, ran a 2:57:11 marathon on Sunday (5th overall), and biked on Monday. His 36 marathons in 2005 contributed to his eligibility for becoming a member of the 100 Marathon Club North America.

Chris Warren, 38, of Renton, Washington, was in 12th position with a 3:08:30 to give him second place (of 24) in the 35-39M division. Gayle Zorrilla, 35, of Tacoma finished as the fifth woman overall and second 35-39F with a time of 3:20:45. She had a comparable performance at the Capital City Marathon the previous week.

Rob Willis, 54, of Tacoma was 40th overall and first in the 50-54M group of 22 by running a 3:27:13. David Jones, 60, of Seattle ran a 3:46:21 for first place of 11 in the 60-64M group.

A treat for Lenore and me was a post-race meal with Ray Scharenbrock, 72, of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Henry Rueden, 56, of DePere, Wisconsin. Ray ran his 500th marathon at the 2004 Yakima River Canyon Marathon. He's the first person to complete 8 cycles of 50 States & DC (with #9 almost completed) and is currently running half marathons and ultramarathons in all of the 50 states. This quest brought him to the Coeur d'Alene Half Marathon.

Henry is also a 50 States Finisher and his specialty is traveling often and running weekend doubles of marathons and/or ultramarathons. He and Ray had run the Frank Newman Spring Marathon at Bozeman, Montana, the day before. He is one of a few megamarathoners who has served overseas in Iraq during the ongoing war. After completing his tour there, he completed his 400th marathon last July in San Francisco.

The total count of marathons/ultras around the table at our meal was 1,611!! Ray (516), Henry (449), Bob (383) and Lenore (263….attended, volunteered or directed). That's real marathon mania. Ray is planning to become a Marathon Maniac soon, and we hope we've convinced Henry that he's more than qualified to join us, too.

It was another good weekend, and we're glad we were there for the great hospitality of the 29th running of the Coeur d' Alene Marathon.
