Race Information: Capital City Marathon

Capital City Marathon
May 21, 2000

Race Report by Bob Dolphin

It's always a treat for me to run the Capital City Marathon. The first time I ran it on July 28, 1985, it was a summer marathon and guaranteed to be a warm run. That year we followed the Women's Olympic Marathon course. Blue Olympic symbols painted on the pavement were a reminder that Joan Samuelson, who won the trials and the 1984 Women's Marathon, had made history in Olympia 16 years ago. This occurred to me as I spotted one of those blue symbols in the first mile of the race by Capital Lake.

However, times change. Capital City is now a spring marathon (thankfully), and some course changes have eliminated some major hills.

This year in spite of clear skies and temperatures in the high 60's, Matt Ruhl, 32,of Tumwater, WA, ran unchallenged through his hometown to win the May 21, 2000, marathon in 2:40:03. The race for second was more closely contested with Frederic Roberts, 39, of Seattle running a 2:44:03 to stay just ahead of William Dunbar, 28, of Rio Rancho, NM, (2:44:15.)

The women 5 race was also close with Karen Steen, 35, of Olympia, WA, finishing first and fifth overall with a 2:48:31. Close behind was Kyra Slade, 32, of Toluca Lake, CA, crossing the finish line by Sylvester Park on the same minute with a 2:48:55.

The only front runner whom I know personally was Gene Trahern, 37, Marathon Achiever of Brier, WA. Gene had a great race and finished 14th overall with a 3:02:21.

At the awards ceremony Lenore and I visited with Jodi Kartes, 30, of Lake Oswego, OR. The last time we saw her was at the Pacific Rim 24 Hour Run at Lonqview, WA, on March 15, 2000. At that event Jodi ran 87 miles to place as the third overall woman in the event. The course is a one mile loop in Sacajawea Park, so she lapped me more times than I care to recollect. In the marathon, she ran a 3:30:15 and finished 4th in the 30-34F division, an outstanding run on a warm day.

The Fabulous Fifties Relay Team that I have been running with for the last ten years or so was well represented. Mel Preedy, 67, of Ravensdale, WA, team captain for running in the Hood to Coast Relay, had another good marathon. His time of 3:44:19 was good for first 65-69M with over 6 minutes to spare. Clyde Sparks, 65, former team leader of the Fabulous Fifties for many years was second in in his division in the half marathon with a time of 1:50:04. Also on hand were team members Ken Olive, 65+, of Fife, WA, and Mike Lewis, 57, of Enumclaw, Wa, (2:08:45 for the half marathon.) Thanks go to Denny Brooks, 42, (1:53:40), for taking a group picture of us after the race and posting it on his well-known website, ontherun.com, along with the Capital City race results.

At the packet pickup at Sylvester Park, Lenore and I met Elizabeth Sebastian, 34, of Everett, WA, and Diana Booth, 35, of Snohomish, WA. It was Elizabeth's first marathon, and she was ecstatic about the pending experience. It was Diana's third marathon, and she was going to run with Elizabeth and be her mentor. We saw them after the race, and their enthusiasm had been heightened by a successful finish with a commendable time of 4:26:41.

My race went okay for a warm day. I felt fine most the the way, enjoying the scenery and the companionship of other runners. At the halfway mark, I was at two hours, so I figured that I would finish around 4:10:00. As it turned out, finished with a 4:08:38, 281st of 497, the oldest runner, and the only 70 year old in the field.

Thanks to the race directors for adding a 70 plus age division this year. I like the course changes with the start relocated to Sylvester Park and the run through downtown Olympia in the first mile. The new course changes between miles 17 and 23 were an improvement in scenic attraction and traffic control. The marathon, as usual, was well-organized and a class event.

The Capital City Marathon is the social running event for the year. I can't comment on all of our contacts, friends and acquaintances, so I'll list their running accomplishments below.
