Favorite Runs - Cool Trail Run

Back to List

Location:Saint Leonard, MD, USA
Description: The Chestnut Land Trust has several miles of dirt trails. Each season brings about different scenery to enjoy. In the summer, you are treated to a shady run and a thick, green canopy overhead. There are several types of trees, ferns, and other plants that provide a nice backdrop to the run. In fall, the vivid colors of the turning trees provide a feast for your eyes. Winter is unique. The absence of tree cover allows for light to filter down to the forest floor. The park looks entirely different and you see details that are covered by plants in warmer seasons. Spring comes and provide the blooming trees, flowers, and the sound of frogs singing. Part of the loop runs by a cypress swamp. Your feet generally remain dry as there are bridges over streams and a planked section over the swamp. I have spotted several different types of wildlife; deer, beaver, foxes, and frogs. There are mild to moderate hills. Several loops, raning from 2-5 miles, are available. By adding loops, you can have approximately an 8 mile run without repeating sections. This park is relatively "undiscovered," so you won't encounter a lot of people. It is closed to mountain bikes, with the expception of the East Loop. All in all, a great place for shorter runs.

From MD 4 South, turn left on Parker's Creek. Take a right on Scientist's Cliffs RD. The parking lot will be on your left about 2 miles down. Stop by the shed to check for maps and trail information.
