Favorite Runs - Ay, Mi cuerpo pide merengue

Back to List

Location:Santiago, Dominican Republic, Dominican Republic
Description: Santiago is probably one of the most chaotic cities that I have ever visited, but I absolutely loved it. Streets are heavily congested, which leaves little room for us runners. Howver, if you can bear dodging cars and people, run along "la calle de sol" do get a good picture of what the downtown region is like. Make sure you pass by "La Sirena"--one of the biggest chain stores comparable to a Target.
Again, your stride might be stifled, but if you want to run more fluifly, try heading down the "autopista duarte" towards "moca"--a rustic town. If gatorade is not the thing that quenches your thrist in tropical heat, try a "coco frio", a green coconut that is sold by vendors along the way. If you can endure the pollution, you'll have great scenery of the lush tropical environment with a backdrop of the caribbean's tallest mountain-- "pico duarte".
If you don't want to bother with running along a highway, get your workout in at PUCMM (Pontificai Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra). This private university not only has a standard track, but offers a 3 kilometer loop around the perimeter of the school. Runners congregate at 6:00 am on the track, and around 6 PM at night for speed workouts. You can usually see more of a casual crowd througout 8:00 -10 am, and 5:00 pm.
One last thing--if you don't want to run around the track, try running around the monuments' loop, which gives a good panoramic view of the entire city. Its small, but you can also add in a stair workout. The monument is perched on a hill--so you can defintely get a workout.
