This marathon is definitely off the beat but a hidden gem it is. It's not listed on the marathon guide calender, but if you're looking to run Alaska as part of the 50/50 club, or even looking to enjoy the beauty, take a visit over to the tiny harbor town of Cordova. It's only accessible by boat or plane but is a must for sites to see. The marathon course has you being shuttled out along an old rail-line through the Copper River Delta and you run back into town. As you run the course, whether it's the 5K or King Salmon Marathon, take in all the sites (glaciers, wildlife, pristine wilderness, etc.), you won't be disappointed. One warning, if you're looking for cheering sections, crowds, etc., forget it, the 2010 marathon race had a whole 23 runners but was well worth the experience. |
