I love this race. I have run it 3 times now. Its a fast, flat course with no hugh crowds of runners. Prerace... real bathrooms to use, yes porta potties are available also. This is one of the best first marathons, and fun ones too. !!!

"Flat, fast and boring" (about: 2012)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Tallahassee Marathon

This was my 5th marathon and by far my smallest. I've run Philly and Houston twice each, so my comments are going to be informed by those experiences.

The course is very flat and narrow, with approx 18 miles running on a very flat, dead straight bike trail. At the start, crowding is a bit of a problem, due to the fact that the half is running with the full and there is only 8 or so feet of width to the course. However, after the split, the course becomes very empty. The last 7 miles I was practically alone. While the course lends itself to being very fast (due to the lack of turns, etc.), it is extremely boring. Effectively all you see for those 18 miles of trail running is straight pavement and forest on either side. Houston and Philly were both amazing walking/running tours of the city. I felt practically no connection to Tally here. If what you are looking for is a zen-like peaceful atmosphere, it's perfect. If you're looking for something to take your mind off the miles, then it leaves much to be desired. Also, it should be noted that weather plays a significant role at this race. On race day it was 60 at the start and about 75 at the finish. While this was warmer than the previous races, Tally is often around the 50-60 degree mark this time of year.

The organization was amazing. Water stations were very well run. First aid was always present. Volunteers were cheerful and well prepared. Gu, Gatoraid, and Water were all ready at hand every 2 miles. It really did feel as if every time you went into a station, they were there to cater specifically to you. Pre-race and post-race was also well done.

The spectators, along with the views from the course, left something to be desired. Tally isn't much of a city and due to the course, there were little, to no, spectators. I'm certain that over the entire course there were no more than 100 people watching, with the actual number being probably around 50 or 60. Again, if you're the type of runner who wants to be in your head and focused, this is perfect. If you are like me, where you're looking for distraction and spectacle, this isn't the best.

Overall: I'd recommend it to someone who doesn't mind the considerations I've outlined above.
Pros: Organization, flat, and fast.
Cons: Dull, narrow, no spectators, potentially hot.

"Great race, if only RDs controlled the weather!" (about: 2012)

This is my third time down for the Tally Marathon. Great to be back on the re-paved trail this year - everything the RDs can control is perfect (darn weather)! Wonderful aid stations with sweets/salt/munchies throughout - not at just a couple token stops. I don't take Gu, but if you do, there are lots of Gu stations too.

This course is flat as a pancake... you just can't get a better PR course - the self-seed start works well, and a mile loop around FSU helps everyone spread out before you move onto the trail. Plus, the new paved trail has four 'real' bathrooms on it - so if you do need to stop, it's not at an unstable porta-potty.

Only bummer this year is it was hot and humid on race day. At least the threatened thunderstorms didn't show up, but someone said it was the hottest race day they'd had for the Tally race in 20yrs and I believe it. Oh well... the aid stations were stocked for it - I was taking two waters and a Gatorade by the later miles - and having bonked big time and coming in at the back of the pack - there was still plenty to be had! Volunteers were great!

The other fun thing about this race is although there aren't a lot of spectators, if family comes down, it's easy for them to catch you at multiple spots. My husband and mom in law were able to just drive along the street that parallels the trail and pop up several places... they stopped at mile 7, 9, 11...13... U-turn and back down the trail.

Can't go wrong with this race!
(I have 27 fulls/15 halfs for comparison) :)

"Florida's Fastest Marathon!" (about: 2012)

Not trying to steal too much thunder from another Florida marathon (which I also recommend and enjoy), but this is the real 'Florida's Fastest Marathon'! The numbers totally support it. Great flat and shaded course, which is nicely broken into digestable segements. Well stocked aid stations, friendly volunteers, and beautiful awards make for a great experience for a first or serial marathoner! You will love it!

I dont run much anymore because I have bad knees, but I love the this race because it is so flat and easy on my body. It is very well organized, plenty of drink/food along the way.

"Great marathon with excellent volunteers" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons | 2 Tallahassee Marathons

The Tallhahassee Marathon has some of the best volunteers on the marathon circuit. For example, no aid station is without someone loudly and clearly guiding runners either to Gatorade or water. No runner pileups here! The volunteers are also encouraging to runners, as many volunteers appear to be experienced runners themselves, knowing just what to say to motivate a runner. They do not shout 'you are almost there' when there are still miles to go. They size up runners and individualize inspiration. Also, this has to be the most generous GU-giving marathon. Enough GU for even the biggest GU-consumers around. And don't forget about easy-to-handle pretzel sticks when salt is needed, esp. this unusually humid and warm marathon year (2012). Thank you!!

"Great Flat & Fast Course" (about: 2012)

This is a good race for a fast time. The race is well organized and the spectators are great. A nice t-shirt to commemorate as well. The aid stations are well stocked including some treats beyond gels, water, and Gatorade. The toughest part is on the trail where your mind can wander a bit with nothing but trees to look atthis is where you need your mental game on. All in all a good race and a good time. Plenty of pizza after the race and the massages were really good too. The massage line was long because they spent some time with you.

"Great Course and Aid Station Support" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Tallahassee Marathon

Great flat course that could have been ideal for a PR had the temps been cooler. Aid stations were prepared with plenty of fluid and the pretzels, cookies and candy at the aid stations was very much appreciated.

I have a lot of respect for the race organizers. That being said, they seemed to be unprepared at race finish given the weather conditions. I'll echo the comments of another who noted the lack of post-race food. They were also out of bottled water and Gatorade / Powerade.

Host hotel would not allow late checkout. That needs to be corrected in the future.
