FINAL RACE ROUTE FOR PENSACOLA MARATHON ANNOUNCED BY COMMITTEE
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The race course for the inaugural Pensacola Marathon has
been confirmed by the marathon committee and final preparations are well
underway.
The 26.2-mile full marathon and the 13.1-mile half marathon will take
runners through Downtown Pensacola and head north up Scenic Highway winding
through North East Pensacola running on part of the Fiesta 10k course to
get back onto Palafox, near Texar and come all the way south on Palafox to
Garden Street and head west toward the Naval Air Station on Barrancas.
Coming back east on Garden Street, the course will turn south onto Palafox
and end at the foot of Palafox near Main Street. The route is scenic and
covers a large portion of Pensacola. While some early hills will provide
challenges, later the course is primarily flat and downhill.
Pensacola native Jim Pschandl is eager to participate in this year's
marathon. "It's unfortunate the Blue Angle Marathon could not continue, but
the route of this inaugural marathon is sure to be a wonderful challenge,"
said Pschandl. "I'm grateful that the hardworking committee was able to
pull through and put the Pensacola Marathon together in time."
Pensacola residents are especially encouraged to cheer for the runners as
they pass through their neighborhoods and the streets of Pensacola. To see
if the route will pass through your area, a detailed map can be found at
www.pensacolamarathon.com.
The design and creation of the marathon race course was a fete of
engineering in its own right, requiring strict consideration of a number of
factors such as terrain, road closures, traffic flow, bridge and railroad
crossings and construction.
The inaugural Pensacola Marathon & Half Marathon will begin at 6:30 a.m. on
Sunday, February 20, Downtown Pensacola. Every finisher will receive a
special inaugural medal.
Race applications are still available and entry fees are as follows: $45
for the marathon and $35 for the half marathon. A $10 fee will be added for
entries received after February 13. Register on-line at
www.pensacolamarathon.com.
