Kenya's Jonathan Kiptoo Yego won the 2008 Rome Marathon in 2:09:57 beating Philip Sanga Kimutai by five seconds. Henry Kapkyai Kimeli came in third in a time of 2:10.17. Galina Bogomolova won the women's race with in 2:22.53, the fastest a woman has run a marathon on Italian soil. Larissa Zousko was more than five minutes behind in second place.

Over 13,000 athletes are expected at the 2008 Rome Marathon of which nineteen in the elite men's field have performances under 2:10 and sixteen elite women have sub 2:30 finishes. A new course record is expected with Philip Singoei leading the field with a personal best of 2:07:57 in Eindhoven in 2007. The 2008 Rome Marathon is expecting 14,500 runners and has a field of decorated elites in this first big European marathon of the year. The men's field consists of Philip Singoei, Teferi Wodajo, Dejene Birhanu, Ottavio Andriani, Jonathan Kosgei Kipkorir and Paul Kimugul who is debuting in the 26.2 mile distance. The women's field will include Galina Bogomolova, Aniko Kalovics, Larissa Zousko, Ornella Ferrara and Baysa Atsede.

Hungarian record-holder at 10km up to the half-marathon, Aniko Kalovics of Hungary is trying to encourage national interest in road running. Also on the agenda is marathon training - 110-130km training weeks. Her next big goal races are the 2008 Rome Marathon and the 2008 New York City Marathon. Citing her lack of experience in hot temperatures, Kalovics has opted out of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Marathon.

The 2008 Rome Marathon is expecting to see 15,000 runners at the start, 12,300 men and 2,700 women.
