The 2010 women's race at the New York City Marathon will include six of the top women from the 2009 race, including the top 3 finishers: Derartu Tulu (2:28:52), Ludmila Petrova (2:29:00) and Christelle Daunay (2:29:16). Salina Kosgei, the fifth place finisher will also return, and many might argue that Kosgei might have finished stronger had a fall near the beginning of the race not hurt her chances. In many ways, the 2010 race will be a rematch of these women. We should mention the incredible fact that at Ludmila Petrova will be starting the New York City Marathon for the ninth time, having won the race in 2000 and been the runner-up in the last two years, including her fastest time on the New York course in 2008 (2:25:43).

A second rematch will also add to the drama as the two top finishers from the Boston Marathon, Teyba Erkesso (2:26:11) and Tatyana Pushkareva (2:26:14) will face off. The Boston race saw Erkesso take off early in the race and build a commanding lead but nearly get caught by Pushkareva at the end - both will learn from the experience and bring it to New York.

Three highly anticipated debut marathons will take place on marathon Sunday as well. Mary Keitany (KEN), the 2010 World Half Marathon Champion will tackle the 26.2 mile distance for the first time as will Worknesh Kidane (ETH), a world champion in the 10,000m and cross country. Of most interest to Americans and the local crowd, will be the marathon debut of Shalane Flanagan (USA) who won the Bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, who has only begun running road races in 2010.

Also adding to the field will be top marathoners Inga Abitova (RUS), Mara Yamauchi GBR) and Madai Perez (MEX).

Notably absent will be two-time champion Paula Radcliffe, the marathon world record holder, who gave birth to her second child two months before race date and, obviously, could not prepare for the race.

In addition to the open race, the New York City Marathon will host the USA Women's Marathon Championships. Many of the fastest Americans are currently absent from racing: Deena Kastor (pregnant), Kara Goucher (recent child birth), Blake Russell (injury) and Paige Higgins (injury); and others opted to forgo the National Championships for the fast Chicago course, including some who would have been expected to place very highly in the American field: Magdalena Lewy-Boulet, Desiree Davila, Zoila Gomez, Tera Moody. Shalane Flanagan will be the expected favorite for the American title, while Katie McGregor, Mary Akor and Sally Meyerhoff should also place strongly in the championships.

With this caliber of talent - the top trio from Boston and the leading women from 2009 New York prepared to face-off - the battle for the victory is bound to be an exciting one.
