USA Men's Marathon Championships - Preview and Starter List

As the best marathoners choose to compete in just one or two marathons a year, it is often the case that the top American marathoners do not get to compete in the USA Marathon Championships. But 2009 is different as those who would choose to run the New York City Marathon are included in the championships.

In 2009, arguably, four Americans stand atop the rankings as America's best marathoners: Ryan Hall, Meb Keflezighi, Dathan Ritzenhein and Abdi Abdirahman. While Ritzenhein is not running a Fall marathon, all three of the others are included in the Championships and will also be vying for the open title at New York City.

The Top Three
Hall, with a personal best of 2:06:17 will be running the New York City Marathon for the first time, but he must be considered a favorite for the USA Marathon championships and a contender for the open race. Meb Keflezighi, as the 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist and a previous runner-up and third finisher at the New York City Marathon and owner of a 2:09:21 best, will also be a top contender for the championships title. And Abdi Abdirahman, with a 2:08:56 personal best is also strong enough to be in the mix for the championship title and a top placement in the open race.

And the Others
But history shows that anything can happen in a marathon - and in 2007 at the Olympic Trials where Keflezighi and Abdirahman were favorites, the marathon had different ideas and both failed to qualify for the team. Instead, Brian Sell who will be competing at the race finished third and made the Olympic team. Sell's best, a 2:10:47, is off, but only slightly, the best of the others.

After Sell, there are a number of other American men who will be competing and this is where the race and contest gets interesting, as the race becomes a true showcase for America's rising and developing talent. Peter Gilmore and Jason Lehmkuhle have been consistent performers over the years nad will likely place well in the championships, while Dan Browne is looking to make comeback of sorts. Bolota Asmerom is relatively new to the marathon distance and will use the Championships to prove that he has what it takes over the 26.2 mile distance. And two men will debut at the marathon distance at the championships: Jorge Torres and Josh Moen, who may surprise in their first marathon. Finally, of note, Chris Raabe, had a strong win at Grandma's Marathon on a hot day - and showed that he is tough.

We will look forward to this showcase of America's men.
