Many of the top competitors running the 2009 London Marathon have met before at races in the past - especially at the previous World Championships Marathon and past London Marathons. In the men's field, Sammy Wanjiru has never lost to any of the other men in the field and is the defending champion at the London Marathon. At the same time, many of the other men have been on the top of the standings: Abel Kirui, Duncan Kibet, Tsegay Kebede, Emmanuel Mutaii - all of these men have been winners against the others, the field is open. In the women's field, Irina Mikitenko has often been the winner against the others - and is the two-time defending champion at London, but Liliya Shobukhova broke Mikitenko's streak by besting Mikitenko in their last outing at the Chicago Marathon and will look to improve on her third place finish at London in 2009. A number of the women have prevailed in contests against the others and any of these women - to name a few - have shown they have the stuff to win: Xue Bai, Bezunesh Bekele, Constantina Dita.

Here's our complete head-to-head listing of elite runners in the 2010 London Marathon. Past performances of these men and women against each other can't necessarily predict who will win the 2010 London Marathon, but it does help us to understand who might be stronger than the others.
