The Coverage:(below) Men's Race | Women's Race

Men's Race back to top

The Finish: Lelisa Desisa - the 2013 champion and 2014 NYC Marathon runner-up wins the 2015 Boston Marathon in 2:09:17. Yemane Tsegay is second (2:09:48) and Wilson Chebet takes third place in (2:10:22). Dathan Ritzenhein finishes in 7th place as first American in 2:11:20. Meb Keflezighi is 8th in 2:12:42.

40K (2:02:38), Mile 25 (2:03:23) - the positions of the top finishers are set. Lelisa Desisa will win. Yemane Tsegay will finish in second place. Wilson Chebet should hold on for third place.

Mile 23 (1:53:55), Mile 24 (1:58:31) - Desisa and Tsegay are alone at the front, but it looks like this will be Desisa's race. In hindsight, it was clear from his early surges that Desisa had a lot of strength on this day and was testing and playing with the rest of the field.

35K (1:47:58), Mile 22 (1:49:13). Four men have moved away from the rest - with Lelisa Desisa again starting the surge. Wesley Korir, Wilson Chebet and Yemane Tsegay are holding on.

Mile 21 (1:44:26) - Going up heartbreak hill, the men's pack has started to disintegrate. Dathan Ritzenhein and Lusapho April have fallen back and others seem to be struggling to stay with the pack.

Mile 20 (1:39:01) - Ten men continue running together with two Americans leading. Dathan Ritzenhein has led much of the last miles, but Meb Keflezighi briefly moved to the front.

30K (1:31:59), Mile 19 (1:33:44) - Dathan Ritzenhein has moved back to the front. In the lead pack are three men who have wone the Bostn Marathon before and would love another win: Meb Keflezighi, Lelisa Desisa and Wesley Korir.

Mile 18 (1:28:42). Just as we were writing our last update, Lelisa Desisa made a surge going up the hill and the lead pack strung out with two men (Ritzenhein and Gebremariam) falling off the back. But immediately Chepkwony pushes to the front and then Tola and then the two who had fallen off the back reconnected with the pack. The runners seem to be playing with or testing each other at this point.

Mile 17 (1:23:16). Eleven men are running all together. This is a different race than we've seen in recent years - we'd expect some runner to try a break at this point or soon.

Mile 15 (1:13:24), 25K (1:16:04), Mile 16 (1:18:06). Dathan Ritzenhein continues to run two seconds ahead with ten just behind as the men start up the hills.

Mile 14 (1:08:23). The pack remains at 11 men - now on pace toward a 2:08 marathon. The men have either gone out to fast early on or are saving themselves for the coming hills.

Mile 13 (1:03:27), Halfway (1:04:00) Dathan Ritzenhein has taken to the lead, with Yemane Tsegay just behind and another nine men just four seconds behind and running together. This does not look like a significant enough surge to break away - but we are impressed to see this from "Ritz." But we also note that the pace has been slowing somewhat.

Mile 11 (52:56). Lelisa Desisa decided to fall back with the rest of the runners and even waved his arms to encourage the others to come up and join him - perhaps he was just doing a short test to see who might go with him as he plans his strategy for later in the race. There are reports of a headwind as the pace continues at a pace which would result in a 2:06 finish time.

Mile 9(43:28), 15K (44:57), Mile 10 (48:10) - Lelisa Desisa is extending a slight lead. Wilson Chebet, in particular sems intent on watching the leader and runs a few steps ahead of the following pack as he undoubtedly remembers letting Meb Keflezighi run away from the rest of the pack and ultimately finishig as runner-up in 2014.

Mile 7 (33:45), Mile 8 (38:44). The pace is toughening a bit - led by Lelisa Desisa - as the lead pack has dipped to 12 men, shedding two Americans, Arciniaga and Ritzenhein.

Mile 6 (28:39), 10K (29:42). The pack continues on pace toward a 2:05/2:06 marathon - faster than almost any of these men can really run to finish. Meb Keflezighi has moved towrd the front. Three Americans remain in the front pack: Meb Keflezighi, Nick Arciniaga and Dathan Ritzenhein.

Mile 5 (23:48). The pack is slimming slightly and is down to 14 men led by Tadese Tola and Yemane Tsegay.

Mile 3 (14:11), 5K (14:42), Mile 4 (18:55). Tola continues to lead as the pack consists of 17 men: Gebregziabher Gebremariam (ETH), Tadese Tola (ETH), Yemane Adhane Tsegay (ETH), Lelisa Desisa (ETH), Abel Kirui (KEN), Wesley Korir (KEN), Wilson Chebet (KEN), Bernard Kipyego (KEN), Guor Maker (SSD), Meb Keflezighi (USA), Frankline Chepkwony (KEN), Lusapho April (RSA), Zersenay Tadese (ERI), Nicholas Arciniaga (USA), Dathan Ritzenhein (USA), Kiyokatsu Hasegawa (JPN), Matt Tegenkamp (USA), Yosuke Chida (JPN).

Mile 2 (9:28). Seventeen men in the front pack, still led by Tadesse Tola. The pace is calming down a bit - but still fast on this downhill segment.

Mile 1 (4:39). Wow - it is a downhill start, but this is fast. It matches the first mile run in the record year - but that was with a big tailwind and there is a slight headwind this year.

The men's race has started. Tadese Tola takes off like a rocket - not sure why... We'll have more to report as the pack forms.

The Men's race will begin at 10:00AM ET. Stay tuned.

Women's Race back to top

The Finish (2:24:55) - wow! Coming down Boylston Street, it was Dibaba versus Rotich. But with 30 yards to go, Rotich showed she had one gear left. The final finish: Caroline Rotich wins in 2:24:55; Mare Dibaba runner-up in 2:24:59 and Buzunesh Deba is third in 2:25:09. Desiree Linden holds on for fourth place and first American finisher in 2:25:39.

Mile 25 (2:18:21) - it's a three woman battle and it is anyone'sa race. Dibaba, Deba, Rotich - who will it be?

Mile 23 (2:07:41), Mile 24 (2:12:49) - After mile 23 Mare Dibaba initiated a surge and only Buzunesh Deba and Caroline Rotich could stay with her. Linden seems to be holding on to fourth place, but significantly behind. Mile 24 at 5:07 was the fastest of the race.

Mile 21 (1:56:50), 35K (2:00:49), Mile 22 (2:02:13) - Mare Dibaba launched a surge and three women moved away, but the lead pack coalesced immediately and Desiree Linden who did not go with the surge has moved back to the front again. The pack does look like it is on the verge of falling apart under Linden's leadership.

Mile 19 (1:45:20), Mile 20 (1:50:58). Nine women continue with Linden leading. This is a very large pack for this point in the race.

Mile 18 (1:43:23), 30K (1:43:23), Mile 19 (1:45:20) - Desiree Linden continues to lea with eight other woen in the lead pack. Shalane Flanagan is now 10 seconds back.

Mile 17 (1:34:17) - Desiree Linden has regained the pack and taken over the lead with seven other women just behind. Shalane Flanagan has fallen off the pack and falling further behind.

25K (1:26:09), Mile 16 (1:28:30). The women are starting into the Newton Hills and Desiree Linden and Shalane Flanagan have fallen off the pack, but Flanagan has moved right back into the pack as Linden seems to be falling back.

Mile 14 (1:17:34), Mile 15 (1:23:13). The women continue in their pack.

Mile 12 (1:06:36, 20K (1:08:51), Mile 13 (1:12:00), Halfway (1:12:33). Desiree Linden continues to lead a pack of eleven women. They seem to be running a smart and consistent race. All three top Americans - Linden, Flanagan and Cragg (nee Hastings) remain in the pack.

Mile 10 (55:37), Mile 11 (1:01:13). Desiree Linden continues to lead and set the pace.

Mile 9 (50:02), 15K (51:48). The pack continues with 12 women.

Mile 7 (38:44), Mile 8 (44:23). Desiree Linden continues to lead as the pace women are 2:20 behind the prior year's time through eight miles but on pace for a good and honest marathon.

Mile 6 (33:12), 10K (34;32). The women's pack continues at the same pace, but has added one additional woman, Aleksandra Duliba (BLR). Desiree Davila is stepping forward as the woman who is setting the pace.

Mile 4 (21:48), Mile 5 (27:34). Buzunesh Deba continues to lead. It's an honest pace leading toward a mid-2:25 finish. Flanagan is biding her time this year as she had pushed the pace in the prior year when a pack of 5 women went through 5 miles in 0:26:11.

Mile 3 (16:25), 5K (16:57). Buzunesh Deba continues to lead and set the pace. The pack consists of 11 women, including all of the favorites and 3 Americans. In the front pack: Buzunesh Deba (ETH), Joyce Chepkirui(KEN), Mare Dibaba (ETH), , Aberu Kebede (ETH), Caroline Kilel (KEN), Shure Demise(ETH), Shalane Flanagan (USA), Sharon Cherop (KEN), Amy Cragg (USA), Caroline Rotich (KEN), Desiree Linden (USA)

Mile 2 (11:06). Buzunesh Deba - the runner-up from 2014 and a favorite, has increased the pace and leads the pace that is down to 11 women.

Mile 1 (5:38). Lisa Nemec, a lesser-known runner from Croatia, leads a pack of 15 women at a moderate pace. We can contrast this first mile with the 5:11 first mile run the year before as Shalane Flanagan pushed the pace from the start and as Rita Jeptoo continued off that pace to set a course record.

The women's race has started. On a rainy day, a large pack of women is together led right away by the two Eithiopians wearing numbers 1 and 2:, Buzunesh Deba and Mare Dibaba. We'll know more as the women go through the various mile splits...

The Women's race will begin at 9:32AM ET. Stay tuned.
