Boston Marathon - Previous Head-To-Head Results

There are two components to successful marathoning - the ability to run fast and the ability to keep in the game and compete head to head against the competition. Beyond the best times and personal bests, we like to look at the times when these men and women have run against each other - and sometimes that can tell us about mental toughness. The chart below shows the times when the elite runners in the 2012 Boston Marathon field have run against each other at the marathon distance.

In the men's race, Geoffrey Mutai has beaten his top competitor - Gebre Gebremariam - on a number of occasions and has never been beaten at the marathon distance by anyone in the field. Beyond Mutai and Gebremariam, we can see a few past match-ups have taken place and could create a probable order of finish, but there is not enough history for a clear analysis.

In the women's race, many of the women have raced the marathon one time against others in the field, but not much more. There are none of the clear rivalries that we often see in the past.
