Excellent Marathon Experience

If you like a course that showcases a beautiful river, great neighborhoods full of energetic spectators, and lots of friendly, helpful volunteers then Richmond is for you! Although it is a big marathon it is well executed from packet pick-up to race start to a fun celebration finish! They even throw in a very nice downhill finish to help you soar across the finish line. The whole town gets behind the race, too, and this truly makes for an excellent marathon experience.

Veteran to run Richmond Marathon running after losing sight: 'Get up. Get out. Do it.'

Matthew Reed, a former U.S. Army soldier who began losing his eyesight after serving in Afghanistan. By 2017 he had lost sight in both eyes, halting his athletic pursuits. With the help of adaptive sports and the Sportable program, Reed found new ways to stay active and has returned to running. He plans to compete in the Richmond Marathon alongside a guide runner and says he now focuses on what he can still accomplish rather than what he has lost. Reed hopes his story will inspire others facing challenges to “get up and get out and do it”, and highlights how local organizations are creating inclusive opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
