"Great race, depending what you are looking for" (about: 2016)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Day of the Dead Marathon Series Day 2
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

This race is a part of a multi-day event (in 2016 there were 2 days but it looks like in other years there were 6 days, with the final day being 'El Maraton'). It's a small race and very low key. The logistics are super easy, with packet pickup an hour before the race. The course for 2016 was along the Rio Grande on a paved trail with an unpaved trail alongside it. Just over 1 mile out and the same distance back, comprising 12 loops for the marathon (I heard that the course differs by year). You leave a water bottle on the table at the turnaround and the organizers fill it with water or gatorade, which is very easy and environmentally friendly. It may cost you ~10-15 sec to retrieve/drink/replace your bottle each time, so you should factor that into your race strategy if you are running for time. They also had a table with lots of different snacks (bananas, pretzels, candy, etc) and a few portalets at the turn around.

Most of the participants seemed to be running this race slowly or walking. There was a very friendly spirit and the loop course made it easy to make friends with the other participants and encourage each other throughout the race. I ran 4:32 and was the first woman and second marathon finisher overall. The one thing that was a little disappointing to me was the lack of acknowledgement/enthusiasm on that point. The timers wouldn't tell me how I'd placed and I had to wait until the results were posted to find out. I don't need a special trophy or a lot of fanfare but since I'll almost certainly never place as first female again it would have been nice to be acknowledged.

The mainly marathons race series would be great for people trying to complete back-to-back marathons or 50-staters. The medal and shirt were very nice. They had coffee and a little bench where my family could wait, and it was nice to see them each time I completed a loop. There were only a few spectators but you get support from the other runners. I thought the registration cost was a little high, considering that it's an open, multi-loop course that required no police presence or traffic control. If you are not from the area, you should be aware that the weather in Las Cruces in October still gets pretty warm by midday (I think it was ~50 degrees at the race start and ~75 by the time I finished). Overall it was a nice little race and I would consider running it again depending on my goals.
