"Great 'small' marathon, lovely scenery!" (about: 2014)

I just love small marathons... Forget all the hassles of the big races. Here in Winterthur race bib pick up takes 1 minute! The race starts at 09:00 a.m. so I amble out of my hotel at 08:40, jog to the start, and do a little bit of stretching. A minute before 09:00 the speaker calls everyone to the start, a shot is fired and we are off!

There were about 200 men and 40 women at the start of the race. About 30 minutes later the half marathon started which meant you only got passed by the fastest runners at the end of the first 21K loop. The 10K and relays also started later so there was little to no clogging of the track.

The course two 21K loops on mainly dirt track, running through the woods, with just one tough climb at KM 17 and 34. Ample refreshments with isotonic drink, water, cold sweet tea, bananas and gels - manned by great, friendly enthusiastic volunteers! You only run a few KM through Winterthur - for the rest it is lovely green forest, running next to a stream and through meadows. Fantastic!

The first loop of the race was great - the low sun and trees offered lots of shade and a great temperature for running. During the second loop it warmed up considerably, with temperatures reaching the low 20Cs, and little shade as the sun rose. This also may have counted for the high number of DNFs (20%!).

Very few spectators along the course, but those who were there cheered each runner. Given the size of the race after the first loop you were on your own, with someone roughly a minute ahead of you (and behind you).

The finish of the race was as charming as the start - very low key. A volunteer tears off the chip from your bib and points you to refreshments (mainly isotonic drinks in various flavours and bananas. The smell of sausages runs through the air as barbecues are started up, and beer bottles are cracked open! And after that it is just a 10 minute crawl back to your hotel in the centre of town!

The only negative point of the race? If you elected to receive a medal (at an extra charge) you actually receive this BEFORE the race, when you pick up your bib! Go figure!

All in all a fantastic experience!

There was not a single car on the track!!!!! We did two loops in the woods and in the meadows; start and the finish are at the same place, which is great and makes life easier for runners. The water supply and energy were outstanding, and the people were very cheerful and helpful. I encourage everybody to do it.
