I ran this marathon in 2011 in order to do an early marathon for the year. Nice to see a marathon starting at 11.00 am ( I think)rather than 9.00am ! The weather was mild and dry. It is a good flat course with one extended upward incline which should prove no difficulty for runners used to undulating courses. As I approached the end line it coincided with a shorter race which was climaxing on the other side of the road so most spectators, including those in the middle of the road were focused on the short run, leaving the marathon runners to run the last 200 metres almost unnoticed. This felt a little like an anticlimax after 26 miles. Other than that I enjoyed competing and with a PB of 3.31, it was worth the trip for me and I may make the trip again. It was great to have the adjacent race HQ to unwind in after the run. The organisers deserve great credit for charging so little for the marathon !

First Marathon

I ran my very first marathon yesterday in Apeldoorn. The race lived up to its name of "midwinter"; it was very cold! I did my training in Tilburg, NL (very flat) and found the gentle incline throughout the race harder then normal. Those who train on hills will have NO problem! I think the help was amazing at this race. They were always clapping and cheering... even though it was COLD out. I would run this again. Great experience for my first time.

"Great experience for a US runner!" (about: 2008)

Looking for an excuse for a midwinter vacation, I scoped out the Midwinter Marathon in Apeldoorn. I flew from the US on Thursday night and ran it on Sunday morning in freezing temperatures. It was a great experience for my first international race. I'll say one thing: the Dutch need to learn how to run hills. Actually, the hills on this course were so gradual and so long that they hardly felt like hills at all. I did notice that a lot of runners slowed down going uphill though. Dutchies just don't have hills to train on... I understand. Where I live, you don't leave the house without heading either uphill or downhill, so running hills is a fact of life. Hot tea at the finish line was interesting... must be a European thing. I enjoyed it. It was reassuring and reaffirming to see a very healthy running culture in place in Holland. Next one? Maybe Einhoven.

I've now run this twice, although course has changed quite significantly. Seems now to be a more town-based event than the rural event it once was.

Firstly, is a real privilege to find a genuine marathon at this time of year. Is very well organized and executed - on time and with good levels of organisational support in terms of transit between parking and the start, drinks, etc. Is combined with some shorter (8 KM and 27 KM) runs so numbers are large - a few thousand perhaps?

Course is a meandering tour of a relatively rural area, although almost exclusively on roads and paths. For marathoners (maybe 20% of the total entry?) there is a second loop, so be prepared to see most people cross the 27 KM finish line, while you still have another 15 KM to complete. Because of the tight roads and large numbers, the first 5 KM are a bit squashed. There is water, tea, isotonic and bananas every 5 KM. That is adequate.

Odd thing is that - because of the weather - most runners wear jackets, hats, tracksters, etc. rather than shorts and singlet. Believe me, the wet and windy conditions make you glad you did so.

Little in the way of facilities at the end. So after handing back your chip, you receive a tea and one bottle of isotonic - nothing else. Like the weather and the course, it is fit for purpose and no more. But still is a great opportunity to run the magic distance in the middle of the Dutch winter.

"Nice run, but very lonely and tough for first-time" (about: 2006)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

This was my first marathon and I missed the start by 4 minutes so I had set myself an uphill battle from the start. It was a nice run, but I did find it very lonely running for very long spells on my own. Only 400 finishers and very few spectators, but those that were there were very supportive. I found the little ups and downs in the forest very tough during my "wall" period. I don't know what I would have done without a local man who cycled the last 6 KM alongside me - I'm eternally grateful, as he upped my pace considerably. I didn't achieve my goal time of 4 1/2 hours (finished in 4 hours and 56 minutes) but was delighted to finish. Every single mile after 10 was tough for me, but I put his down to being on my own for most of the marathon, and nearly all of the second half. But for all the hardship, I know I will run this marathon again. People were lovely and it was well organized.

"Great first time..." (about: 2004)

This was my first marathon, so I had a lot of questions for the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. They did a great job of helping me out. The wind and rain weren't particularly exciting, but you can't exactly expect good weather this time of year. Running by the finish on your first loop can be a bit disheartening if you're having trouble, because there are other runners already finishing the entire marathon. Course is through and around wooded areas, quite scenic. I would've appreciated something such as energy gel at the refreshment stands every 5K instead of just sports drink/water/warm tea but having those stands every 5K was nice. For a first-ever marathoner, I had a great time!!

"Good out-of-season choice" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

Risky time of year to run a marathon, so can accept the dreadful rain and wind in 2004. Good route, probably 60% on roads and 40% on paths around or through the woods. More undulating than expected for Holland. Water and isotonic (and tea) available at every 5km distance marker. Only frustrating part of course is the loop past the finish at the 27km point, when many runners doing this shorter distance leave the race. Low-key organization, although changing rooms, etc. at an army camp are excellent.

Very little available at the finish, other than water, isotonic and tea. Strange experience that, when cross the line, a very heavy blanket is thrown over your shoulders (great!), but then is taken off you 20 meters later as you leave the finish area, leaving you with the 1km walk back to the changing point! I think I wore my blanket for 15 seconds in total! However, a small grumble in an otherwise good day out... and the rain did stop after 25km or so.

"Great to start the year" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

Despite awful rain and zero spectators, I enjoyed this modestly up and down forest course. Organization was very friendly and well organized except - no BEER in the finishing zone! And no spicy foods either, so for a German guy, kind of a set-back...

"What joy, what fun, chilly or what?" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

Ran this in light snow and minus 2C and still absolutely loved it. The organisation is fantastic. The race through heath and woodland is magical. Every 5K there was a clock for pacing and a drink station. There are gentle slopes here and there. At the finish there are much needed blankets. Most runners are on a shorter course and when they leave at 25K there is an almost eerie calm and you're on your own in the fairytale woods. You have got to try this. Only one hour from Amsterdam and the Hotels are reasonable. Go for it.
