(about: 2007) 4-5 previous marathons \| 1 Dutchess County Classic Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is the ultimate ego boost for the average marathon runner. I ran my best time and even received a 3rd place trophy for my age group, placing in the top 12 of the marathon runners. There were only about 70 marathoners, which explains my strong finish, but it was awesome to walk away from this race with a trophy! There were many more half marathon runners, making the first loop of the course more interactive than the second. There were points in the second loop where the only people I saw were the volunteers, but that gave me time to enjoy the scenery. There were plenty of water stations and the cross-country runners handing out the double caffeine gels were awesome. If you're looking for a big race with many spectators, this may not be your ideal race. But if you enjoy a relatively flat course with well placed water stations and an increased chance of finishing near the top, then this is the race for you! I will definitely run this race again.

Less than 100 marathon finishers on a 2 loop course that got very quiet after the half marathon was completed. The scenery was nice and the race organization was more than adequate. Goodies included a pair of knit gloves and a mesh bag along with the the t shirt.
Iggy Bo from New York City (10/25/2007) "Well-run, low-key race" (about: 2007) 4-5 previous marathons \| 1 Dutchess County Classic Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This was a very nice and well-run event. It's low-key so don't expect huge crowds on the course, but Keith Axelrod and his team were great and the volunteers were superb. The course is a double loop and fairly flat, and combined with the perfect weather, it added up to a really enjoyable experience. I am going to put it on my schedule for 2008.

This year, there was a great turnout for a half marathon and a kids race. So, it caused some delays in parking as well as the start for marathoners. I have enjoyed this marathon since 2002. It is well organized and friendly. The refreshment stations were well equipped with enthusiastic young volunteers and there was plenty of food before and after the marathon. The course is a two-loop and on mostly flat, pretty, country roads with some traffic. The traffic was well controlled by volunteers for runners throughout. I think this is the BEST BUY marathon for the price! I will run this again in 2007.

Parking was a mess, which delayed all race starts. There were no clocks at each mile and it took me a few miles before I realized that they spray-painted the mile numbers on the street. There was no info related to the race inside of the bag I picked up at the expo. The course was nice except for cars racing by. The one positive thing I can really say is that the people at the water stops were very supportive throughout. It was a ChampionChip race, yet marathoners didn't get them nor was there a timing mat at the start. I have a good idea why there was such a low turnout for the marathon.

(about: 2006) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Dutchess County Classic Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 This is a nice flat course but there are no spectators to speak of - if you need a cheering section, bring your own. We were easily able to follow "daddy" around as he ran. We were disappointed that post-race stuff was just for the 5Kers and half-marathoners. They started to tear down the "post-race" at about 4H into the marathon. Not fun to promise your kids the fire engine slide when you get to the finish line and find it gone.
Eliot Collins from Raritan, NJ (9/20/2005) "Small Marathon in Rural New York State" (about: 2005) 50+ previous marathons \| 2 Dutchess County Classic Marathons COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 This is the smallest marathon that I have ever run, with only 38 finishers in 2005. There were also 289 runners in the half-marathon, but they were done after one loop of the two loop marathon course. I ran most of the second loop with no other runners in sight. The course is open to traffic and in a few places I had to be somewhat careful. The volunteers were very supportive, and they waited around patiently for the slower runners. There were plenty of oranges, apples and bagels at the finish line. I had a nice day in the country, and I look forward to returning next year.

W. from Pennsylvania (11/14/2004) "Flat, beautiful, rural course" (about: 2004) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Dutchess County Classic Marathon COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 What I really enjoyed about this race was the bag that was presented to me upon finish. In a simple bag was an orange, an apple, a banana and a bagel. They were the some of the freshest food items I have ever had and I really enjoyed the treat. Having them in a bag like they were allowed me to get right in my car and head for home (3 hour drive). Usually you search all over for water and food at the finish and sometimes leave without finding it. The loop allowed for easy course following. Did not like the 9am start time--too late in the day. Also, race was advertised to start at 8:30am and it did not start until 9am or 9:15am. This race should start at 7:30am.

The other comments basically sum it up as far as course, etc. They had 64 marathoners this year and did a very good job. Starting time was listed online at 8:30 but that was the kids run - we got started approx 8:50. Recommend it and I'll be back...

B. from Binghamton, NY (9/21/2004) "Nice low key marathon" (about: 2004) 3 previous marathons \| 1 Dutchess County Classic Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 The feature events are the 5k and half marathon, with 300+ runners each, while the marathon attracted about 60 runners. The marathon runs two laps of the half marathon course with the first lap concurrent with the half marathon, so it gets a little lonely the second time around. There are water and sports drink stops about every 2 miles. Race is on suburban and rural roads with some traffic. Corner workers at all key intersections help keep things safe. The corner and water stop workers were enthusiastic, but you won't be seeing a lot of crowd support beyond that. The course is generally pretty flat with a gradual hill at mile 6 and short rolling hills between miles 22 and 25.
