BQ Distance Re-qualified
An update to my comments of April 4, 2019: E-mail sent out by the organizers said 'A very well-meaning volunteer gave a bad course direction. We immediately recognized it and made some "on the fly" adjustments to the course based upon some very fast calculations, we were confident at the time that every runner ran a full 26.2 miles. However we needed to re-certify the course to validate the results.' Another e-mail was sent by the organizers a day or two later stating 'I am thrilled to report your times count "AS-IS" no time adjustments necessary. Our mid-race change was long enough (just). And we are certified without qualifications or exceptions.' A PDF copy of the approval letter was attached to the e-mail. Quick action by the organizers. They are a class act.

Repeat runner disappointed this year
This was my 5th B&A trail marathon. I love it because it's local, flat (relatively) and well organized (usually). The weather can be unpredictable but usually is good for running a marathon. I've BQ'd twice there. This year I was disappointed though. There was a lack of course marshals and/or timing mats that afforded the opportunity for cutting several minutes off one's time by accident or, if so inclined, on purpose. Also, as a matter of principle, at least put the correct date on the shirt rather than last year's date.

An OK, but not great marathon
This was my 11th running of this race. Most years have been pretty good, but I have to ask why would a race have last year's date on the shirt, especially after charging a significant amount to enter. In year's past some great swag was given. A really nice running bag one year. Very nice running pants or heavy duty shirt or a vest in other years in addition to the race shirt. Unfortunately at their mile 1 marker my GPS read 0.64 as did several other runners near me. Someone familiar with the course said the elite runners missed a turn in the first mile. Apparently no one was stationed at the turn to direct them. Maybe they were short on volunteers. I empathize however making turns going through town are very important. To their credit it appears that the organizers mostly corrected for the error by adding distance at the first turn around and possibly else where in the race since my GPS watch ended with 26.22 miles. GPS watches are not perfect though and I have seen mine occasionally add distance in other races. Another complaint I have is that this race has gone back to having you tie your chip to your shoe. Not a big burden, but most race nowadays have a strip on your bib number. I assume this is a cost saving activity, but given the great swag they used to give out what happened to all the registration fee dollars collected this year? I don't want to be overly disparaging. You will never find a nicer pre-race staging area. The new high school is beautiful and has plenty of room in the cafeteria to prepare for the race. You just walk out the door and a couple of hundred feet to the start line. There is loads of parking available as well as food and drink after the race. Seeing all the Naval Academy students that come out to run the race is very inspiring. In spite of my grumbling I will be back next year. It really is a nice size with a pretty nice course even if a bit boring at times. And I don't need lots of folks cheering me on. It's just nice to see a few smiling faces and encouraging volunteers at the aid stations of which there were plenty. The B&A volunteers are wonderful.

It was an OK Marathon
This was an average marathon but some issues did concern me and the cost was high to enter so you would expect these items to be a priority. The shirt had the wrong year on it, the course did not have enough water stations and the mile markers were off for the majority of the race. However, if you need a marathon on your calendar this will work. I give is a solid grade of 'C+.'

An event like no other.
I have never run a full marathon, but this is my third BA 1/2 marathon. The BA marathon and 1/2 marathon is a race like no other. It takes place on a beautiful paved, wooded, trail and is well organized. Tremendous effort has gone into to ensuring a successful race; but it is the extra touches by the race director, that makes this particular event, such a meaningful experience. The volunteer shirts are printed with 'Amazing Volunteers;' and they are amazing! They stand for hours at a time, regardless of weather conditions, ONLY to help others achieve their goals. The premium for this race, had a personalized quote from the President of the Annapolis Striders; reminding us to 'go for it.' We are the youngest that we will ever be for this race; Why wait? Considering my own hesitation, I asked him, 'Is it better to try and fail, than to not try at all?' He responded, 'If you try, you can't fail.'
Everyone has different abilities, levels of training, and personal goals; but the one common denominator as we line up at the start of the B&A, is that we are all winners, before we begin.

A Hometown Marathon done right, great race
One thing about Annapolis Striders is that they obviously care about the craft of putting on a quality race. I've done one other race and it was no different well organized and ensures all the things one would expect from a 'big race' but with a friendlier community feel and minus all the crowds and headaches with big races!
I've trained a lot on the trail, so I knew the course. Yes, its pretty flat. There is some road noise, but overall a quiet course with a lot of woods and nature to look at. Also, its an open use trail, but I never felt too crowded, something I really don't like! Also, everyone on the trail was friendly too.
I gave 'Spectators' five stars there not many spectators. And while volunteers might be part of race organization, everyone I passed from the water stations to road crossings had smiles and words of encouragement. Everyone was great!
The finish-line was well run, and the post-marathon food after-event amenities were great! The race medal was also a bottle opener, so I can put in in my kitchen drawer and use it, not just put it away will all the others I've collected over the years.
Like I said, this may be a smaller event, but they really care about all the details in making this an experience to remember. If you have a chance to do this, don't pass it up!

Nice, mostly-flat course; unpredictable weather
B&A is a well-organized, low-key marathon. (Thank you, Annapolis Striders and volunteers!) The course is just how it's described on the website ... the majority of it is flat with one good-sized hill around mile 7 and some gently rolling hills. The latter miles are a little quiet. The weather ... what can I say? It's March, so expect anything. This year it was cold (wind chill in the 20s) but the first 7 mi were great. After that, the wind kicked up stayed around for the remainder of the race. I would recommend this marathon if you're looking for a small, peaceful marathon.

Fast Course - Great for BQ
B&A is definitely a fast course! Great for a BQ (I did this year). One hill but nothing difficult then flat on a rails to trails course. Low key but very well organized. Race director does a great job and the volunteers are super. Great Spring Marathon.

Fast Course, Low Key Event
A very good event, given the right conditions.
2014 featured terrible weather with a great deal of rain and strong winds. Standing water was ankle deep in a number of stretches. Despite this, it was still a good experience, and I ran my best marathon by 20 minutes.
The race is low key, well organized, and the course is reasonable. Aid stations are well stocked, volunteers friendly and helpful.

Great race if not for the monsoon like conditions
This marathon is a definite PR course if you don't have to deal with monsoon weather conditions in late March . The course is pancake flat except one hill at the mile 7 area and some small rises near the wooden bridges that you cross. Not very pretty but it is an old rail to trails course so you know you want have to run on any concrete. I would love to run this race when the weather was perfect. Unfortunately it rained the entire weekend of the race.
The volunteers at the aid stations were totally awesome. Not many spectators out on the course since they would have been in ankle deep water.
I grabbed a piece of Papa Johns pizza from the post-race food table. I normally just drink chocolate milk after a marathon and went to Food Lion down the street for that after the race.
The race shirt was a totally awesome long sleeve turtle neck shirt. It is the best shirt I have ever received. I will be able to wear it everywhere when it is cold.
Medal was small and had a misspelled word on it (should read Annapolis Striders instead of Annapolis Stridres.
The packet pickup was easy at the high school.
Having showers at the end was a God send after being in the pouring rain for 4 ½ hours with temperatures around 42.
Some suggestions for runners of future B&A Trail Runners:
I would recommend staying at the Spring Hill Suites in Annapolis off exit 22.
It was nice and about 9 miles from the race.
Get to the race early. Parking is limited and only had 4 port potties.
You could also use the bathrooms inside but it was crowded.
For out of town people, take advantage of the hot showers at the end.
In summary, as I am now over 1/5 through the 50 State quest, I am glad I ran this one for the Maryland Marathon.

Miserable conditions, great race
This is a race put on by runners for runners and it really showed this year. Between the rain, wind and cold weather, it was a challenging day. I ran the half and found it tough going. But the logistics were almost flawless, with volunteers where they were supposed to be, clear mile posts, and a fully stocked finish line. Its races like this that show the true commitment of the organizers.
Pros:
1. Waiting inside the high school! Warmth, and flush toilets. It was also a welcome place to come in out of the rain after the race.
2. Great swag. The Annapolis Striders always manage great premiums for a relatively inexpensive race. This year it was a nice pullover.
Cons:
1. I don't get the lack of bag check. I guess its a security thing, post-Boston bombing, but I've run other races since that did have a bag check. There was ample parking at the school but it was annoying to run back and forth to my car in the rain.
2. Few spectators. Of course this year I was amazed that anyone came out given the conditions thanks spectators! but even in good weather this race has few people on the sidelines. I don't mind that, but if a lot of cheering is your thing, this isn't the race for you.

Great early spring small marathon, flat and fast.
The Annapolis Striders put on a great marathon. The course is flat and mostly on the B & A Rail Trail. It is well supported with enthusiastic volunteers. It started and finished at an LA fitness gym, so hot showers and nice locker rooms were a big plus. This is a great early marathon if you don't prefer lots of spectators and other runners. I got another BQ too.

Nice, no frills, early spring marathon.
I ran the 2013 race. The logistics of this race are super easy. There are plenty of hotels in the Arundel Mills area, a few miles from the start. We stayed at the Aloft, which allows pets. It was the first time my Pomeranian could join us on a marathon trip.
The packet pick up at the running store on Friday was easy, in and out in 5 minutes. Parking at the race start on Saturday at the LA Fitness was was ample and free. About 90% of the course was on the paved bike path, which is generally flat and fast. The first 5 miles were somewhat congested but not too crazy. The race organizers limit the number of runners to a few hundred. It would be wise to bring a Nathan water belt as there are not very many water stations. The stations were, however, well staffed and well stocked with water, Gatorade and GU. Volunteers were very friendly and supportive. Thank you! I recommend this race to experienced marathon runners who don't need big crowds, expos or spectators. The hot shower at the end of the race is a BIG plus! Thank you Striders for a great race experience!

Good organization, good people
The course, support and organization of the race were great for the size of field, and are a tribute to the folks in that area. the volunteers late in the race were Great!! While not my best performance day (didn't get my finishers medal yet - but still hopeful it will be sent), I would recommend this run to anyone.

Great Marathon - Great folks
This was my 50th Marathon and 32nd state so I've seen good and some bad. This was a well-run race, the team has good experience and is well organized at the important stuff. I did the early start (had an early flight) and even though I was the first to go thru the water stops the crews did great.
The showers are a nice touch and greatly appreciated. I also enjoyed getting the pants instead of the shirt (already got a closet full of those).
I recommend this race to everyone!

Well organized small race
I ran the 2012 race for my Maryland race and I feel I chose well. This was a nice, small (1000 runners; 329 did the full marathon) race.
There is lot's to like about this race. I was able to pick up the race packet race morning. The race begins and ends at a high school so you can warm-up indoors and use real bathrooms.
After a mile and a half running on roads to spread the field out a little the rest of the race is on a paved 'rails to trails' bike path. It is a flat course with only one real hill to speak of that we hit at mile 7. The scenery along the way doesn't really change but it is always pleasant.
There are plenty of aid stations (in fact more than the web site promised); They all had gatorade and many on the second half had orange slices and pretzels. I did not see any gels but since I brought my own perhaps I missed them. I'm a slow runner who had a bad day but the volunteers remained out on course till the end. Thanks!
They had a nice medal and gave out nice running pants rather than a shirt. I also enjoyed the post-race massage. I didn't use them but showers from the school were made available post-race.
This race was run by the Annapolis Striders running club and my experience with races run by local running clubs has always been great. They certainly understand a runner's needs and the 'local flavor' is a nice touch.
You can't do wrong if you decide to run this race.

Nice flat fast scenic course
I am starting to work on the 50 state marathon challenge and have heard many great things about this race and wanted to avoid the hilly Baltimore race so I choose B&A for my maryland race. First, this is not a regular trail race. The entire race is on paved surfaces. It's not a huge race and there are stretches with no spectator support. However, the trail is scenic and there are distractions to keep you occupied as you run. Instead of a shirt, the organizers gave out a nice pair of jogging pants. The fee is very low for a marathon. Very nice water stations (the one located at the 18/20 mile mark did run out of cups between my first and second passing) with nice sweet treats during the 2nd half.
Like most half marathon/marathon races, the half marathoners did a good job on the post-race refreshment area but there was still plenty of food left when I finished. The showers were luke warm at best but most races don't provide showers anyways.
Overall, I am very happy with the nice flat course. I had my 2nd fastest time. Very small hills except for the one around mile 7 but that did not last long. Highly recommended.

awesome event
This is a very well organized event. The course was fairly flat and I enjoyed being on a bike trail instead of another tour of a city. Only one hill and it comes early and is not real significant. If you are a 50 stater I can't think of a better marathon to do in Maryland than this one. I was at the Baltimore marathon last October and B & A Trail Marathon beats it hands down.

No complaints!!
First marathon I have run that I have zero complaints about. Great organization, easy packet pick-up, nice scenic course, awesome volunteers, plenty of aid stations with lots of goodies, lots of post race food including hot pizza, post race showers, free massages, and they announced my name at the finish line!! I loved every part of this race, and you can't beat the price!!

Great, small race
I ran the half. If you don't need large cheering crowds and changes of scenery, this is a fun little race. It was well-organized, logistics were easy, great swag (track pants!), the in-door availability of a large high school was great and it was a very pretty, quiet course. I have only one criticism. The map doesn't have an elevation chart but says that it is a flat course with a hill at mile 7. Actually, mile 7 starts with a pretty significant hill but it is followed by two miles of an incline. Had I known I would be running for three miles uphill, I would have paced differently.

Awesome Race!
This was my first B&A Trail Marathon. I have run more than a dozen marathons, mostly in the past two years and this one is by far my favorite. I arrived about 40 minutes prior to the start and found parking behind the school. Packet pick-up was quick and well organized. My favorite part of the race was the gear drop off at mile 3. I didn't use it at 3 miles but dropped my jacket and other items on the return trip and the volunteers bagged it and marked it and I retrieved my stuff at the post race awards area. I was energized by the volunteers at every aid station. This was the friendliest bunch of volunteers I have ever encountered at a race. The volunteers really kept me pumped up during the final 13 miles. The police officers were great and even took time to offer encouragement as well. My thanks go out to all the volunteers, support staff, police and anyone else who had a part in this great event. I will be back and I will recommend this race to others. Semper Fi!

Great for the price and location
I really, really wanted to run a BQ in this race and needed a 3:20. But....my training wasn't the best and I wound up hitting the wall at 20 miles and finishing in 3:35 in the rainy and windy 2011 race. But....who cares? There will be other opportunities to run a BQ.
This race is everything that others have commented about. Cheap, well-organized, low-key, flat, fast, great and enthusiastic spectators, though few.
It does get lonely after the halfers peel off and the overpasses on the last miles seem like mountains. But you can shower in the locker room at the high school afterwards.
The lady with the sign 'just keep running' at mile 24 kept me going. The hat and medal rock and the tech shirt is a keeper.
For me, this is close to home and cheap, a real no-brainer. But I would recommend it to anyone who wants a fast, flat course and doesn't mind low-key.
I would do it again.

Great town, good race
Having never been to Annapolis, we really enjoyed our visit and would recommend anyone check it out - marathon or not.
Because I typically run on a similar rail trail, the course was nothing special for me, though I think because it's relatively flat, and it's a good one on which to post a good time. The organization was great and the volunteers were out of this world. Special thanks to the guy with the orange slices who ran after me near mile 19 to hand me one after I had fumbled my grab at a slice.
Like others, I also wondered about the length of the mile near the end when we briefly went off the trail. Unlike other posters, I don't have a Garmin, but my watch said my last four miles were 8:45, 10:25, 8:52, 8:43. Just didn't seem that the third-to-the-last one was much slower than the other three.
But since I wasn't on the cusp of PR anyhow, that was a minor issue. It still was a fun race.

Great race, but was the distance right?
I've done this race four times and loved it every year. It's not the most scenic course, and crowd support is sparse. But it's very well-organized, and there are lots of goodies for the low registration price. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a low-key, early-spring marathon. My one caution is that the course should be a PR course, but I've never run that fast mostly because the weather tends to be iffy (as it was this year).
My one beef is what the previous reviewer had said: I think the course was mis-measured this year. I'm used to having Garmin readings being a little off due to zig-zagging and the imprecision of the watch. Still, the readings were dead-on accurate for every mile except mile 23, when the race veers off the trail for a half mile. I also got a reading for mile 23-24 that was about 1/4-mile longer than it should have been. I hope the organizers will remeasure this stretch and let all of us know what happened.

VERY WELL DONE!!! Would LOVE to run this AGAIN
Parking - Great. Had no problems during the packet pick-up on Saturday or on race day. Was able to park in a side parking lot, which was close enough so that I could leave stuff in and feel comfortable that I could pick it up quickly if I changed my mind and decided I needed it last-minute.
Packet Pick-Up - Very easy. Parking was good. Pick-up was quick. Very nice, premium, long-sleeve, Under Armour shirt. We also received hats and pins at the finish. Great value for the price!!!!
Course - Well, I ran a PR by 9 minutes, so I can't complain. I had friends run with me and I really needed their support during the 2nd half since the majority of the runners turn off after the half. It is a paved, flat path with 1 appreciable hill at mile 7. It looked worse running down it; then when you turn to run up, you realize it isn't bad. I had no issues with crowdedness on the course. Runner were very supportive and cheering each other along the way. The only problem with the course was that my Garmin registered 26.48 miles. I still ran a PR but I can only imagine it without the extra .28 miles added! This was my only frustration since there were plenty of places where they could have corrected this on turn-arounds.
Water Stops - Stellar. Loved the Mad Hatter/Alice in Wonderland-themed water stop. The weather was calling for rain and the volunteers couldn't have been more cheerful and supportive. They had great energy. Plenty of refreshments at each water stop. Plenty of food at the end. I had been concerned about this since I had read that the half marathoners ate all of the pizza in past years, but I had plenty of every type of food I desired at the end.

Nice Surprise!
I really enjoyed the access to the school before and after the race. The surface ('soft' asphalt) is great, as were the volunteers (a large, supportive contingent!), and the food and beverages (lots!). The shirt is one of my favorites (low-key, yet cool). Way to go, B&A!!

In Praise of Volunteer Spirit
I can't review this race w/o sending a shout out to the fantastic volunteers who made this event happen. Incredible job....y'all made the day!
The course was a basic out and back on a long bike/running path with a couple short diversions into the neighborhoods. For the most part it was very flat with only one hill near mile 7, and it wasn't a hugely challenging hill.
The weather in 2011 was very ugly with spitting on and off rain all morning and a headwind the last 7 miles.
The weather and the course pretty much knocked out any spectators.....that's where the volunteers come in.The volunteers played the role of the enthusiastic crowd as well. Their morale and spirit as you went past the water stations and the road crossings was infectious. I looked forward to each stop when I saw how fired up the vols were.
The check in (race day) was simple and being able to stay in the school (30 seconds from the start/finish) made the weather palatable. They had plenty port-a-johns at the start and on the course. Every water station was well spaced and well stocked with ample provisions from fruit, pretzels, Gatorade, and water. The post-race food spread was quite well put together and for a small race to have massage tables was a blessing. The tech shirt and medal were spot on. Having the school gym showers available after the race was a bonus.
Last year a comment was made about IDing the early starters...they took the comment to heart and early starter bibs were a different color.
I highly recommend this race to anyone looking to do a marathon in Maryland.
Did I mention the outstanding volunteers?

Awesome Low-Key Marathon
I really enjoyed this race!
The 2nd half is a bit lonely, so if you feel like you need company then sign up for this race with a friend. I was pretty much running alone and with no one in sight for a good portion of the last 13.1.
The race fee is relatively low compared to other races and the swag is fantastic. This year they gave you a technical long-sleeve shirt, a pin and a gym bag!
The race was well organized and I felt the volunteers were very helpful and prepared.
The post-race food was great, the option to take a shower was fantastic, and the high school was a 30-second walk from the finish.
I don't have one negative thing to say about this race other than I wish there was not an early start. During my first 13.1, I was slammed into by an early starter who was running on the wrong side of the path?!?! Everyone was dodging her - it was pretty ridiculous. I also had no idea what place I was in while running because the volunteers could not distinguish between an early starter and a regular runner.
Other than that minor thing, I think this race is fantastic and would recommend it to anyone!

Overall a good race
Half-marathoners outnumber marathoners by almost 3:1, so the race changes from crowded in the first half to desolate in the second. Great course, volunteers, and aid stations. My big complaint is that the pizza ran out for anyone who didn't finish under 4:30. I ran the half last year, and they marked everyone's bib to limit runners to one slice of pizza each; but apparently in 2010 it was a free-for-all. I was looking forward to the pizza (that I paid for!) in those last tough miles, and was very letdown when I found out it was gone. That left a bad taste in my mouth and I have no desire to do this race again.

More Than I Expected!
Decided to run the half instead of the full because a harsh winter impacted my training. I was very pleased overall with the race. Small, but very well organized. Everyone helping out was very excited to be there. Scenic course, and I was impressed that they put forth the effort to remove the last patches of ice from the trail. Race is also very close to downtown Annapolis. This makes for a great little vacation weekend (which is what I did).

Super easy logistics. Flat. Great organization.
My comments mirror the others... this is a great race with great organization. I loved starting and ending at the school. Able to stay warm before and able to take a shower afterward. The volunteers even held my two large suitcases in bag check.
It offered amazing goodies - a great tech shirt, a duffel bag, a pin, and a medal. There was loads of food afterward (but I missed out on the pizza).
Annapolis is a great city. Flying in and out of Baltimore was so easy and cheap.
The course is flat, but hills around mile 7 and mile 18. The course is fairly scenic, with some really pretty scenery scattered throughout. The second half was not as pretty as the first half.
I was worried about congestion with the up-and-back on a single trail, plus the half mixed with the full, plus the potential for other users on the trail. No worries.
Well stocked water stops; I wish there had been more, but I was prepared.
I would definitely recommend this race, especially if anyone is looking for a Maryland race.

Great, small race with big-race organization
This was a very high-quality race that really caters to the runners (put on by runners and it shows). The cost is great, and the swag was awesome, but even better was the overall organization. Having the start/finish at the school with plenty of parking and warmth to wait in before the start is an awesome idea. The aid stations on the course were well stocked (but like most small runs the volunteers need a little more training). The course was actually a lot of fun for me, flat but with a bit of challenges on the rollers, especially in the second half. The finish line celebration was great (food, showers, timely awards, etc.). Finally, the RD and volunteers were top-notch! A great destination race for anyone!

Great, small race
This was my 50th marathon overall and my 40th state. I have to say that this is a great, small race, and I highly recommend it. Great organization; the race director responded to e-mails. A big concern for me was a shower afterward (before jumping on flight home). She made it happen, and even brought towels! Packet pick-up was a snap. The early start was nice, very organized. The gym was open so we could stay warm prior to the start.
Great price for the amenities, sturdy gym bag, tech shirt and awesome medal! Relatively flat course but had some icy sections - no fault of the organization. Volunteers are some of the best I have ever seen; kudos to them as well.
Only complaints:
1. Not enough aid stations, although the ones they had were well stocked with water, Gatorade, Coke, pretzels, oranges, Swedish Fish, etc.
2. I didn't see any medical assistance on the course, but it is possible that I missed them.
3. I heard there was pizza at the finish, but it was gone when I finished. However, there was plenty of soda, chips, bagels and oranges left.
There was a problem with my finishing time, but the race director investigated and quickly resolved the issue. I highly recommend this marathon to anyone, whether you are a 50-Stater, Marathon Maniac or a first-timer. I plan to return in the future!

The star count is sort of low... you run on a paved rails to trail. If you like that sort of thing, this is a GREAT course. Even if you don't like that type of course (I don't like marathons run on paths), this is an excellent event, even if just an OK course.
This race is in a wonderful destination run! Annapolis is so much fun, and Baltimore isn't bad either! Great food and great sightseeing alone would make this a great trip... but then a smaller race with a low entry price sweetens the deal! But wait! There's more!
You get some of the best swag of any race at any price of any size!!! I mean, we got a great travel bag, complete with a removable computer sleeve in it! We got a great, long-sleeve, tech shirt and dandy finisher's medal... but that's not all! We got a finisher's pin. I collect race pins and never expected a small race to have a pin. Somehow (very sadly, I might add), I lost my pin already. I put on my board at work and took it off to show somebody... and poof! I lost it! I might have to beg for a new one. I truly loved the swag, and the event.
I did not like the course that much; the second half may be flat, but it seemed to go on forever! I see why everybody runs the half. The two races run along together until just about mile 13, and the half IS the signature race here. But alas, I am a marathon freak and can't pass up the longer runs...
This race had race-morning packet pickup - great for people running doubles - and had race morning expo for people that thought that it was going to be cold and windy. Grab some shorts! The rest stops were fun and fully stocked - almost like an ultra they had so much food and soda. You never see soda other than in an ultra. A complete event.
Pre-race you were in the school - a nice, dry, warm school. The race was even chip timed! Warm food afterward, good awards, great swag, cheap price, great location, easy to get to... a darn near perfect event!
I can see why it sold out this year. I'm not sure why it doesn't sell out every year! If you need Maryland, or want a nice March run, this may be your race! Plus next year is the 20th anniversary and should be even more special... if that is even possible. So sign up early if you want to try a nice, small event in a great location for an excellent price!

Very well organized, small marathon
I ran the half marathon and it was a great experience. The expo/packet pickup was very fast (5 minutes tops). On race day, the school was open for runners to stay warm in and use the bathrooms. The race itself is flat with the exception of the turnaround point (mile 6-7), which had a small hill section. If you are looking for big crowds, look elsewhere. Everyone was very friendly - race organizers, volunteers and the other runners. I would run it again and would consider running the marathon.

Great, small race on a scenic, paved trail
This is an excellent small race. The course is relatively flat, with gradual ups and downs on the rail trail. There is one signficant hill at one end of the route, going down at about mile 6 and coming up at mile 7. Excellent organization. We got a great gym bag with a beautiful race logo on it, along with the race shirt, a lovely medal, and all of the other amenities you could want. Donna, the race director, is great. The weather was nearly perfect, starting in the low 30's and rising to the low 50's, but with a nice breeze to keep you cool enough. Some snow remained in the woods from the record snows this area has had, but only a couple of spots had a little water and ice runoff - nothing to worry about (I just slowed down for a few steps to be careful).
This was my 50th State and I ran with a couple of wonderful friends, and the entire event was amazing. I got recognized at the finish, including receiving a gift from the race director.
The only improvements could have been a couple of more porta-cans early in the race, while the half marathoners were still with us, and larger mile markers or maybe a balloon on them so that they were more noticeable. I missed 3 or 4 along the way.
Annapolis is a lovely area to visit, and hotels there are an easy 15 minutes away from the start/finish. The year 2011 marks this event's 20th anniversary, so I expect an even better race.

Nice, Small Marathon
This was my MD Marathon and the first one this season. Since it was a cold morning, it was nice to be able to stay in school before the event. Good value (thank you for the bag). The weather was perfect. The course is flat, except for mile 7, but you know what to expect since mile 6 is all downhill. Nice support. I think there were more water/food stations than announced, which is always nice. Great volunteers. Few spectators, but that's to be expected. I think that there should be more than just water at the finish line. Maybe Gatorade bottles or something. Obviously, they had food and drinks in the school, but it seemed so far away.

flat and simple
A great and well run race - you will be happy you ran it. They organizers take care of all of the details:
+ pre-race, a warm building with lots of toilets
+ the best stocked water stops
+ nice volunteers
+ out-and-back on a rail trail, so you can think about running - not looking for arrows
+ post-race showers and lots of food
+ runners from different places
Only negatives:
- a little ice on the trail in the second mile
- trail was a little congested early on
A race worth running.

Great Small-Town Race
This was my first marathon that wasn't in a major city, and I loved it. Packet pickup the night before and parking the morning of the race were totally stress-free. The course was flat and charming. I ran a PR and a BQ. I wouldn't call the scenery breathtaking or anything, but the B&A Trail is a pleasant place to run. The participants were very friendly, offering encouragement to other runners during the race. The only downside for me was that, even though I finished in the top 50, by the time I made may way to the showers an hour or so later, there was no hot water left. All in all, I would highly recommend this race for someone looking to kick off the spring season with a relaxed and friendly run.

Flat course; great volunteers and schwag
I did this race as a challenge to myself, to keep myself running through the winter months. Snowmaggedon sidetracked my training a bit, but with the weather forecast calling for high 50s with sun, I had to give it a go. This was my 8th marathon.
First, let me say that the Annapolis Striders Club knows how to put on a good race. The cost of this race was very reasonable - and a steal when I saw what we got with the entry fee (a nice, long-sleeve tech shirt, and a quality duffel bag). The medal is very nice too! The aid stations were well stocked, there were plenty of porta-pots on the course, and at the end, they had plenty of food left, even for the slower marathoners like me. As I approached the finish, they announced my number and name.
What I did not like about this race was the course itself. It is flat, but it consists of two out-and-back sections on the B&A trail. It was my own fault for not studying the map better, but I didn't know where the second turnaround was located, and so those middle miles (13-19) seemed to take forever. BUT, it is very flat - probably the flattest marathon you will find in MD!
I had a great race and really enjoyed just getting out there again. I would definitely do the half, though I'm not sure about the full.

Best Race I Have Participated In
There are 10 reasons this race rocked:
1. The people were warm and welcoming - I counted 45+ "good jobs" during the race.
2. Showers after the race.
3. Pizza after the race.
4. Nice give-aways!
5. Flat course.
6. Aid stations every 3 miles with aspirin, oranges, Gatorade, water, etc.
7. Lots of 50-staters present, doing this for Maryland.
8. Close-knit feeling, with international presence (Korean running club was there).
9. The race director was the nicest lady ever.
10. I BQ'd....

Very good small marathon
This race is put on by the Annapolis Striders - and I am a member (so take my comments with a grain of salt).
The course is almost completely on the B&A Trail (a rails-to-trails course). I run this trail regularly, and enjoyed the opportunity to have the race on my "home" course.
The race is quite small, but is very well managed. The race starts and ends at a high school, and one of the best things is the ability to take a hot shower after the race.
I look forward to running this again!

Well done small race
Packet pickup was at the HS and was fast and easy. Friendly volunteers. Small but nice expo. Race starts 7:30 and it was cold, but you can just wait in the nice warm school till race time and there are snacks. Very nice course, mostly on conditioned trail with a few miles on roads. Excellent support - plenty of water, Gatorade, cookies, pretzels, etc. There is maybe a 1/2-mile hill around mile 7, but it's not steep.
Great pizza and food at the finish. Nice medal and cool rain jacket as swag for a very decent entry fee. Perfect season starter or 1st 1/2 or full marathon.

Great small race
OK, I'm biased a bit, since I belong to the Annapolis Striders who put on this race. But what a great small event this is. Excellent premium again this year, low entry fee ($50), even a hotel deal for out of town people. Plenty of parking, nice blacktop trail to run on which shelters one nicely from the wind that popped up race morning. Support is good for the first half (there is a half marathon running as well), but the support for the second half is a bit sparse. The volunteers are terrific and aid stations ready for each runner. Pizza and other food at the end. Even showers in the school for runners! It's my eighth marathon and you won't find a better value anywhere.

Hosted by running club that knows what to do
My first time running this event, and I was not disappointed. If you are in the area, this is a good event to run. If you need big crowds, this is not for you
PROS:
* Great staff and volunteers; at the race expo I asked Donna (the RD) where the showers were, and she made sure I knew where they were located. In addition, she promptly returned my phone call.
* The course allows family/friends to view the runners at numerous points.
* The course is relatively flat, although the hill at the first leg turnaround is tough.
* Nice race jacket and medal; post-race food was plentiful.
CONS/IMPROVEMENTS:
* Bridges were very icy and treacherous. Have volunteers lay down salt, or if no salt is allowed, shovel them. Snow/ice was predicted, and adjustments must be made.
* Crowded start; separate the half and full or move the starting line to the street.
* The little spur off of the B & A trail was unnecessary. Extend the course on the S or N legs because having to run off the trail was mentally deflating.
Overall, an A. I would recommend it to others without hesitation.

Great small race.
I loved this race. It was my second time running it and I'll run it again in '09. The course is flat and fast, and is mostly off the road and on a paved trail. In '08, it was cold before the start, but it warmed up to the low 40's, with no wind - perfect for a great run.
The Annapolis Striders ran this very well. Organization was top-flight, even calling out my name as I approached the finish line. Nice touch.
Not a large number of spectators, but still a fair number for this size event.

COLD, Calm, and Collected
B&A Trail Marathon was #38 in my ongoing quest for 50 states + DC, and, I must say, A PERFECT DAY for a marathon - 32 degrees at the start, "warmed up" to maybe 40 and NO WIND! AND... there was plenty of "crowd support" where it counted - at the many well stocked aid stations along the course!
Having lived briefly in Ann Arundel County in '92-'93, there was never a doubt as to which marathon I would do in MD for the 50 - I used to do weekly long runs on the B&A Trail. The Annapolis Striders are a TOP-SHELF runner's club and I've never heard negatives of any of their races.
This course couldn't be better. It has a slight downhill for the last 6 miles. No photographers at the finish line - but that's not the race director's call.
Thanks for a great day. Keep up the great work. We do so appreciate your efforts!

Pleasant, Well-Run Small Marathon
I like small marathons, and this is a good one. Registration was efficient and friendly. The course was well-marked and had the dual advantages of being paved like a road but located in the country (except for a mile through a residential neighborhood and a half mile or so adjacent to a mall parking lot). The water stations were well-stocked, the volunteers friendly and patient (i.e., they stayed open for the last of us). The medal was fine, though not exceptional. The weather was much better than anticipated. There was plenty of food at the end. Entry fee was only $40.00.
Overall, this marathon compares favorably with several other nearby small marathons I have done, including Greenbelt President's Day, Harrisburg and Self-Transcendence, is on a par with Atlantic City, and probably not quite as good as Delaware, though in fairness Delaware is quite a bit bigger.
My only suggestion for improvement was that there probably could be one more water stop in the early miles. I can't quite put my finger on where, but it seemed like the water stops were more sparse in the early miles than I am used to.
There were plenty of reasonably priced hotel choices, all about 15-20 minutes away - farther than I like, but there was no Sunday-morning traffic, so it was a smooth ride to the starting line.
Usually very compulsive about my pace on each mile, I only bothered to look at the time at the 5, 10 and 20 mile marks, so the course must have had a pleasant, relaxing effect on me. There are no spectators, so keep that in mind if that is what you are into.
All in all, a very good experience at a time of year when the choices are few in the Northeast.

A well-organized, low-key, friendly race
I highly recommend this marathon for anyone who might want a more intimate experience than the mega-marathons provide. The spectators are small in number but enthusiastic, and the paved course is flat (a couple of very minor hills) and fast. The Annapolis Striders put on a good race. The volunteers were unfailingly friendly and helpful. This year, the only glitch was before the start, when runners were lined up facing the right way, then the wrong way, then finally the right way, resulting in the race starting 10 minutes late. But it was no big deal, and some stragglers even made it to the start on time as a result of the confusion. If you have family/friends cheering you on, tell them you need them most anyplace after mile 13, when the half-marathoners finish and things get kind of lonely. The turnaround between miles 19 and 20 is kind of weird, zigging through a parking lot for a short distance, but you're back on the trail headed south soon enough. Even those of us who finished in the four-hour range had hot pizza and plenty of other food/drink waiting after the race. One other note: If you're driving to the race, get here early because parking at the high school (where the race starts and ends) fills up fast.

A great small-town marathon!
The B&A Trail Marathon is a perfect small-town marathon! I highly recommend it to runners who don't need large crowds of spectators to motivate them.
It was great to stay in the warm comfort of the high school until a minute or two before the start. The expo on race morning allowed me to get last-minute supplies I needed.
Organization is excellent - plentiful water, Gatorade, gel and Vaseline at the stops, and a place for runners to drop clothes and pick up at the finish.
Thanks for another great experience!

Excellent, fast course - great organization
B&A Trail is a rails to trails project that is an asphalt surface. There is one short hill at about mile 7 and a couple overpasses to negotiate. Otherwise, this is flat and fast. If the weather cooperates (which it did in 2008) you can run a PR here.
Excellent fleece vest in lieu of a t-shirt. Medal is alright; nice for the price of registration ($45, if I remember correctly). And the pre-race and post-race venue is excellent - nice, warm high school before the start and plenty of room to sit down and relax during the awards. Pizza and other goodies afterwards were also nice.

Great small marathon
This was my seventh marathon and first B&A. What a wonderful small marathon. Organization was super. The volunteers on the course were great - I especially liked getting a variety of Gatorade flavors instead of the usual lemon flavor only!! Post-race food was plentiful. And, with so many fall marathons now charging over $100, the price was just right!
You can't beat the almost-flat course (the hills at mile 7 seemed almost nonexistent while the smaller hills between miles 17 and 22 where the trail crossed the highway, because of their placement, seemed much larger). I bettered my PR by over 2 minutes.
If you want a great, small marathon and a course on which to run a PR, this is the marathon for you. I look forward to this race next year!

Great race for a virgin!
I researched several events before picking this one for my first full marathon. I certainly wasn't disappointed! The organization, expo, and post-race amenities were better than expected for a small marathon. The course was flat and fast. The volunteers were friendly and helpful. Water/aid stops were appropriate. The weather was perfect. (And all at a bargain price!)
I highly recommend this event for first-time marathon runners!

What can you say? "It's a small race."
Thank you to Severna Park High School and all of the volunteers! The support prior to, during and after the race was exceptional. Plenty to drink along the course, hot showers and plenty to eat following. The course was extremely flat... and the hill at mile 7 was a welcome change in the terrain. Crowding onto the trail was a negative, and making up time was nearly impossible until after the half marathoners finished. Get into the front early and you can definitely expect a PR here!

Sorry I didn't run this sooner!
What a great race! From organization to the course to the finisher fleece vest to the weather, it was a stunning day. My thanks to the race directors for allowing the early start AND for coming down hard on the few who chose to break the no-headphones rule. A great field of friendly runners, nice folks to cheer us on, and the volunteers were the best (especially for food - thanks Rita!). MD excels at small, super high-quality marathons. I even loved the hills at mile seven.

Great small marathon!
The 2007 edition was my second B&A. Both were used as a training runs for Boston. The organization is great, and pre- and post-race are great. Enough food (even if the half folks get at it first). Highly recommended, if you're in the region and want to run a nice small marathon.

Completely surprised!
Having done several large-scale marathons, this race was a breath of fresh air: camaraderie, support, a one-minute walk to the start line (after a less-anxious wait on picnic tables in the school's cafeteria), an on-time start, and amazing after-race food and awards. There is a great spirit to this race that big-city marathons will never have. A great race I hope to enjoy every year!

My first Marathon Enticed me to do more
This was my first marathon. I chose it because it has the optional half-marathon and I didn't have to decide which I was doing until the half-way point. I hadn't really trained as well as I needed. But on race day, I pushed on and with the help of a 50-stater whom I met around mile 17, I got to the end. I will do this race again. But more importantly, this left such a good feeling that I'm training for other marathons too.
The *only* negative thing about this race is the loneliness of the late miles. At one point, around the 14th mile, I wondered if I had missed a turn - there were no other runners and no spectators at all.

I love this race.
I've done this race 3 or 4 times now and I always enjoy it. Small, peaceful, friendly, well-supported, mostly straight and flat (especially since they revised the course), and good post-race food. No big bells and whistles; just good running.

The Best Marathon in the Wash. D.C. Metro Area
This was my tenth marathon and my third B&A Trail Marathon. I came back a third time because I truly feel that it is the flattest marathon in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area (95% flat for sure!). The "new" course cuts out the hill at the beginning of the race (I believe it used to be at mile 2 or 3) and you only have the Maryland Route 100 overpass bridge at mile markers 18 (going) and 21 (coming back). A smaller trail bridge in the race could be counted as a "hill" and there is a gradual incline towards mile marker 7, but these are nothing to be worried about. Other than what I have just mentioned, the B&A Trail Marathon is flat, flat, flat! With a little help from the "new" course, I managed to get my PR here - finally breaking under 4 hours... thanks!
I really enjoyed the organization of the Annapolis Striders Running Club once again and this year the shirt premium and medal were an improvement over past years. For the $40 registration fee, it was a great bargain, no doubt.
Surely, there are very few spectators along many points of this race; however, I believe that most runners that choose to do a "small" marathon race like this should expect that. Yes, it was cold and windy in the beginning, but the sun was out and it was dry!
My closing thoughts are that most runners pick marathon races that they enjoy running; the B&A Trail Marathon is an enjoyable marathon to experience as I saw some of the same runners this year as I did in '05 and '06.
Overall, a small and very well organized and enjoyable marathon that is sure to please those runners looking for a PR - you won't be disappointed!

Great Marathon
This was one of the best organized marathons I have run in. The aid stations were some of the best I have ever experienced. There was water, Gatorade, fruit, coke, cookies, hard candy, aspirin and petroleum jelly at almost every one! However, this isn't a marathon for those that need large crowds to cheer and support them. The spectators were those the runners brought with them. Since I'm a back-of-the-pack runner, I'd rather not have large crowds watching me struggle through a run. :) Great race!

Great things come in small packages
This race made me wonder WHY I've been avoiding small races all this time!
B&A offers inexpensive registration (which includes a moisture wicking shirt - kind of hideous design, but at least I can USE it!), convenient expo/packet pick up (day of option), smooth start, flat and scenic course, and a post-race "feast" with pizza, pb&j, bagels, bananas, oranges, pretzels, trail mix, cookies, and bars.
Yes, B&A is a small race. But for that reason, they provide things the large races cannot: they provide 2 water stops on the course that collect your clothes and return them to you at the end. The 6 massage tables set up post-race required only a 15-minute (max) wait time. Gu was offered on the course 3 different times, as were Snickers Marathon bars, fresh oranges, and pretzels.
The Annapolis Striders do an excellent job with this event. Not only did I get the best "Maryland" in my quest for 50 states, but I cut my PR (set in Chicago) by 9 minutes!

New 2007 course is an improvement!
The new 2007 course is a major improvement. They removed the huge hill at the beginning and one of the hills around mile 7, making this a MUCH flatter course. It means more of the trail, however, and almost no neighborhoods. But it terms of pure running, it is a major improvement. Unfortunately, the new course was not posted on the website, so if you were close to a time goal and had made your pacing strategy based on the old course, you were majorly surprized during the run, which is never a good thing. But kudos for the guts to change the long established course. Keep it the same now, guys, so that we can compare times year-to-year.

Very enjoyable
This is a very enjoyable hassle-free small race. The Striders have done a great job in organizing this. The trail is nice and flat, and the odd "dangerous" road crossing was well manned. An extra water-stop or two would not have been out of place, but on the cool day that it turned out to be, this wasn't sorely missed. No crowds but I don't mind that - if you need a crowd to egg you on, you are in the wrong sport. The trail does not provide spectacular scenery, but it was neat to note the little station markers along the way. Seeing the whole field of runners twice is very interesting. And the Korean group team spirit was inspiring. Shower in the school gym was icy cold, but if you believe in a cold-soak after running to hasten recovery, this was just as it should be! Eminently run-able and a good change from the mega races.

excellent, well-run marathon
This year, 2006, was my first time at B&A and I thoroughly enjoyed myself in the marathon. It is run mostly on a paved rails-to-trails course with room for all runners, especially in the first half with marathoners and half-marathoners running together. I had to be careful early not to get carried away with the pace of nearby half-marathoners. Dial in the self-control in the first half or you could burn out. The course has some hills and slight grades, enough to keep you alert, but nothing extreme. Water stops were well-spaced for the fairly cool day. Volunteers at each stop were supportive and skilled at getting the drinks to the runners. Pick-up, start and finish were efficiently run. There were no real "crowds" on the course, which is a fine with me, so I gave a "4" for this category. If you want large crowds, B&A does not have them. I enjoy running marathons and talking to others while running. B&A is perfect for that and has a good course if you want to run a fast time. Overall, I rate this marathon highly as a well-organized runner's event. I plan to return.

This race was good, not great
This marathon was just okay for me. Packet pick-up was hassle-free, love the technical shirt and you cannot beat the $40 price. HOWEVER... there are not enough water stops in the beginning and the course is not at all memorable. They did use the chip this year but it would have been nice to get a split time or two. Only things they recorded were the start and finish. But they do allow you to change from full to half after you have already started running and you do get an official half finish time and medal. I thought that was nice (although, I'm happy to say I did not do that). I finished in just over 4 hours and they were already tearing things down. I thought that was much too soon. This was not a bad race; I just didn't feel like there was anything special about it.

Great Course!!! Great Organization
I really enjoyed this event. It was on a beautiful suburban bike trail. The water and porta-potty stations were abundant and well-placed. I loved the "bunny" mile markers. I enjoyed 2 additional elements of the race. First: the Naval Academy marathon team was represented and it was great to see them in action. I also loved the "esprit de corps" of the Asian busload of marathoners from NYC. Great group of marathoners. Lastly, the non-competitive early start time was appreciated. I loved, too, the performance short-sleeve shirt.

Great Marathon!!!
This was the first time that I ran in the B&A Trail Marathon and it was a great experience! Having previously run in the 'big city' races before (USMC & Baltimore), I really enjoyed the fact that I did not have to fight for running space along the race route and I really appreciated the serenity of the trail over the smog and loud noise of previous races.
I did not mind not having the thousands of spectators along the race route because it actually gave me more time to focus on the run itself. As far as the water stops go, there could have been 1 or 2 more water stops along the race route, but due to the small size of this marathon race (roughly 250 marathoners), I think the organizers did a great job working with their running club's resources and volunteers (thank you Annapolis Striders!).
A pleasant surprise was the fact that after the race there was still hot pizza left! A nice t-shirt and multi-colored finisher's medal all added as nice touches for a low cost registration fee of $40.00 - you can't beat that.
A huge thanks to the race organizers, especially Lisa Fontaine, who kept the runners posted on the weather developments prior to the race date. I will be back in 2006!

I recommend this one
I liked this race because it was small and I never had to worry about clipping someone's heels (or vice versa). No chip, but it doesn't matter because you cross the start line right away. Thanks to Severna Park HS for opening doors at 6 a.m. and the finish! And where else can a four-hour-plus finisher 'place?' Thanks, B&A!

This is a quality race experience
Let me clear a few things up about this race. Looking back at previous comments, this was a pretty good race that had a few issues. I ran it this year and it was a pleasure; the support was good throughout, and there were the number of fans you expect at a small trail run. The awards were nice, it had a very nice race shirt, and it generally was a pleasant race. The trail is flat and maybe not exciting but it makes a nice, fast course. There was plenty of food at the end. I would recommend this race.

Fantastic organization; great course for 1st-timer
This was my first marathon and I chose it because of the flat course and proximal location. I wasn't sure what to expect from a small race, but I have to say the Annapolis Striders did a terrific job mapping and marking the course, and many more spectators than I had expected turned out despite the weather, which was in the low 30s to mid 40s. All in all, a great race, especially for a virgin marathoner. I will definitely run this one again (and hopefully without injuries next time)!

Well run marathon
This is a one of the best run local marathons. A manageable field and a good flat course are covered by well organized volunteers. Runners see the entire field at two points (miles 7 and 19.5 turn-arounds).

Great, small marathon!
A great early season marathon. Good organization, low-key, ample aid stations, and no crowds. The weather conditions couldn't have been any better. Good job Annapolis Striders and volunteers...I'll be back.

Beautiful run in a long park-like setting
This is one of the best marathons I have ever run. The organization was fine - this is not a big city run, but all our needs were taken care of. The course is great - only two hills, and a very smooth path to run on. All the volunteers were great. If I can get back to Maryland from Mississippi I will certainly repeat this run.

Great course and good time
This was the first time that I ran the B&A Trail Half Marathon. Overall I enjoyed myself, especially considering the larger races I have run where you have to fight your way through a crowd to get moving. The course was pretty much flat, except for the hills through the first 3 miles. These hills are not bad and I actually enjoyed them. The race volunteers were very friendly, and police were stationed at every intersection.
On the bad side, I would've like to have had maybe one more water stop some were almost 3 miles apart. Additionally, the reason that I score the organization so low is because I felt they did not prepare enough for the larger than usual showing. For example, upon finishing the race I received a medal from last year's race! When I asked for an exchange, they said they were sorry, but they had run out of new ones... this I think could've been avoided. I overheard many first time marathoners that were unhappy when upon completion they were given an old medal. They said they wouldn't run this again... I will definitely run this race again, since the course is pleasant and it is much more fun than the larger races.

Great course for a fast time
I ran this marathon for the first time and had a wonderful experience. The weather (low 50s and sunny) obviously contributed a lot to the experience. The course winds around local streets for the first 3 miles and then heads on the B&A trail, which is a flat paved bike/running path. It's surprisingly wide, so there's no danger of running into people coming the other way. There's a minor detour around miles 7-9, with a long sloping hill. After that, it's back to the trails which are virtually flat, except for a few small inclines on the overpasses. It's not the most exciting course in the world, but it's potentially very fast because there are no turns. Miles 7.5 to 19.5 are a straight line. But, it's also a little monotonous, and there are very few spectators (although the ones that were there were very enthusiastic).
The organization was very good and professional, although I thought they started taking down everything a little early. Another downside is that the trail isn't closed for the race, so you have to share it with cyclists and rollerbladers, which can be a little dicey. Overall, I really liked this race. It's small, but very well-run. The weather in Maryland can be a little iffy this time of year, but this is a good place to get a PR on a nice day. The organizers deserve a lot of credit for putting on a great race. I'll run it again.

A great easy to run small marathon
This is a very nice, well organized small marathon run mostly on a paved (asphalt) rail to trail path. Course is nearly flat with only two small hills. Course starts at a local high school, covers about 3 miles through local neighborhoods until getting on the trail, from there about 3 1/2 miles to a turnaround (first hill) and then back past where you entered the trail continuing up the path until just before the 20 mile mark and turn around and return back down the path (with a second small hill around mile 21) until just about the 26 mile mark when you get back on the road that the high school is on. Hard to tell exactly how many ran the marathon as a 1/2 marathon is held simultaneously with most opting for the half.
Typically only about 100 or so run the full marathon, but this year was a banner year with over 800 signing up for the two runs total. Looking at the start, I doubt there was that many actually running. Regular water stops every couple of miles all stocked with sports drink and several with oranges and other foods (pretzels and the like). Nice finisher's medal and nice long-sleeve tee all for a very small entry fee. Good post-race food - bagels, cookies, pretzels, etc along with Gatorade and water. A very nicely organized marathon.
Note, this is a small trail marathon so, crowd support is minimal, but very supportive. I'd run it again. My only suggestion, is that if there is a large number of entrants like the number entered this year, consider starting the half marathon 30 minutes later, as too many more runners would lead to a bottlenecks on the path early on.

Great day! Fun race!
First of all let me say this was my first marathon, but I really enjoyed the experience. It probably helped that it was a great sunny day slightly under 40 degrees to start and 55 by race end. The organization was great... the race start line was less than 100 yards from the warm school caf where there were race registration and room to stretch. Was able to run along with very friendly folks... just a great day!

Well run race
I ran the 1/2 marathon. Packet pickup was stress free and there was even a small expo with good prices. The race started on time and was a good course for an experienced runner. After mile 7-8, all of the hills were out of the way and it was just a drag race to the end. The volunteers were enthusiastic. Due to the out and back nature, it was nice to see the other runners on the way back. It got a little tight at some points on the trial, but I was never slowed down but the throng.
Post-race offered free massages (thanks to the race director) and lots of food. Even the 1/2 marathoners got a medal.
All in all, a great small race.

An excellent 'training' marathon for Spring racing
I have run this marathon 6 times and have always enjoyed it, even though the weather has been nice to me only once over those years. I like the solitude that comes after the half-marathon point of the race. The only hills
in the course are rolling and are done with by
mile 8, then it's a long out-and-back drag race
with only three turns over the next 18 miles.

Race Dominated by Half-Marathoners
Things got pretty empty on the course after the half-marathon finish as there were many more people running the half. The course is mainly a paved trail and not real interesting. The race organization was very good. There were very few spectators in the second half of the race.

Annapolis Striders do this small-field race well
Someone wrote in that they finished 3rd but the field was weak. As a 3rd-place finisher, I saw it more as a victory of attrition. The weather is often raw and runners decide to do the 13 instead. We were enjoying this race in 2000 when suddenly someone said, 'You're in 3rd!' It's a tribute to the Annapolis Striders that we are all treated very well, whatever our place or pace. The trail is 13 miles long, perfect for an out and back marathon. A nice little race.

Well run, plenty of support
I have run the marathon 3 times and the half marathon 2 times. All but about 4 or 5 miles are run on a paved trail that used to be a railroad bed. It is relatively scenic and a nice run. Even though there are only about 250 who do the full marathon, you can usually find somone to run with if you are interested. It is a very flat course and a good Boston qualifier. Weather tends to be pretty good with temps around 40 for this year with light rain starting at about the 3 hour mark.

A great small marathon
This was my second marathon (my first was Chicago) and I really enjoyed it. It is definitely a change if you are used to lots of fans, but it made me focus on my running. The race coordinators and volunteers were very friendly and helpful. I accidently got a race official T-shirt rather than a runner T-shirt, and Tom Bradford (the director) went out of his way to get me the right one (had to order more of my size and send it to Michigan)...I thought that was really cool. As for the course, it was relatively flat and peaceful...I found it very enjoyable. I particularly liked the fact that it was set up in an out-and-back style, which allowed me to cheer for other runners, especially during miles 17-23...that was really motivating for me. I would definitely run it again in the future (gotta work on the other states and DC first, though :oD!).

No Specatators and Rainy but a Positive Experience
After running two Marine Corps Marathons, the lack of spectators in this marathon was an adjustment. However, it was nice to not be so crowded or have to fight thousands of people for water. The course was relatively flat, and fairly well organized for a small marathon. Great shirts, friendly race volunteers, police at every intersection. It would be nice to have more water stops (some were almost 3 miles apart), and some food during the race. Fortunately, I brought gels, but I was essentially starving. I would not recommend it for a first marathon, as midpackers/slower runners are essentially running alone at several points, water/food/specatotor support is scarce, and watching people get off at the half marathon and double back may discourage some. I will run this again, as the course is relatively flat and I improved my time by 10 minutes.

Good winter marathon
I agree with the other comments -- low-key organization, relatively flat course for Maryland, course is an old B&A Railroad line paved over with a well maintained 12' strip of asphalt, plenty of people (300 marathoners, 500 half marathoners, friendly support staff, police at intersections, and some fans), water and Gatorade stations spaced about 3 miles apart, cold weather, and post-race pizza and bagels. The directions from Washington, DC's beltway were adequate. There were plenty of shirts -- grey, long-sleeved, with a pretty 6-color picture of rabbits and no sponsor advertising. I'll run this marathon again next year.

I love to run
I had the opportunity to run in this marathon 2 years ago. The marathon was low key, which allowed peace of mind and good concentration. The course was flat, and had pleasant scenery throughout. I look forward to running the marathon again in 2001!

A great little race
I ran this in '99 and really enjoyed the run. The course was along what use to be a railroad route, and it was generally pretty flat. There were about 150 runners doing the marathon, but the half-marathon, which started at the same time/place, was much larger so there were plenty of people on the course for the first half. And since the second half was an out-and-back, there were always at least a few other runners around. The organization was excellent -- the water stations were well staffed and everyone was very friendly. It was cold enough in the morning that there was ice in spots on the course, but they had someone at each of these spots to warn you. Post race food was fruit, pizza and cookies; plenty of everything even though the half marathoners had finished long before me. Definitely will do it again after I finish the 50 states.

Low key but a real nice race
I have run it sveral times and have never come away disappointed. It is a well run race with a quiet but nice course though spectator turnout is a little light. But a thumbs up and a must do on your marathon calendar.

Slow, boring course
It's pretty sparse. I placed third last year, but not because my time was spectacular, but there wasn't anybody there. The organization wasn't great either - the directions were bad, there weren't enough shirts to go around. Not a great race.
