A proper challenge!

This course is really really tough. I've also run the North Pole marathon, and I'm not sure which is harder. They are quite different obviously and not really comparable. The Volcano Marathon starts at 14,700' elevation and stays above 14K for the first 6 miles. The finish is at 11,700', and there is a huge up-hill along the way, at about the 17 mile mark, gaining about 1000'. It's all on dirt road or single-track trail. The sun is intense. The scenery is spectacular, and the organization was flawless... my only 'ding' in that regard is the race HQ 'Hotel Kunza' was acceptable, but lacking in a few regards. Our outings to nearby attractions for training runs were all quite enjoyable. I made some new friendships, and renewed a couple of old ones, on this adventure. As for 'fans', well, there aren't any, except for the race staff at the 10K/20K/30K marks (water/supply stations), as well as a couple of random encounters along the way. But they were enthusiastic and helpful, so 5 stars in that regard.
