Beautiful and challenging two-loop course

This is my third marathon. My second was MDI in October. I gave this four stars because it was two half-marathon loops, otherwise I would have given it a five. This marathon supports the local mill town of Millinocket and has no formal entry fee - your fee is supporting the local economy. For a small-town race, this was run well, course was well-marked, and the best part was the local community out supporting the race and runners. Most ran or walked the half-marathon and the distance runners went for a second loop. This course was a challenge because the first half of the first loop was on a snow packed road - footing wasn't treacherous but there were some slippery spots an footing wasn't solid for most of that part of the course. It was also mostly uphill into the wind. Hills are mostly a steady incline and long - a few miles long. The weekend activities included an artisan festival and several dinners. I ran MDI and for an additional small fee ran this one and got a special finisher's medal. The field wasn't filled with highly-competitive racers but mostly athletes and locals looking for a fun race. Dress warmly, this is a COLD race - it's in Maine in December!
