too windy

I was excited to run along the coast but didn't realize it meant so much wind! Also it rained, which they can't help. But, raining while running on a board walk was very slippery and I actually had to slow down. The post race was actually the worst I've seen. Smaller and less organized than most 10K's even. I think they had to move things because of the rain but I had to keep looking around just to find water and a banana. Before the race there were only about 3-5 portable bathrooms, nowhere near enough.

On the Boardwalk in Atlantic City

This is a well organized marathon that provides scenic views of the ocean on the course. The weather was delightful this year and the usual ocean wind was not a big factor. One nice feature is you can wait inside the casino before the race starts to stretch and use the restrooms. There are plenty of places to stay, although it can get expensive . I drove and was able to locate parking for just $5.00. The race had plenty of water stops and port a pots on the course. They provided water and Gatorade in cups on the course, but no Gu shots. The course was well marked. It is mostly flat, with some overpass hills during the first 3 miles. It should be noted that 8 miles of the marathon are on the boardwalk. I found that surface a bit hard on my legs, but there were no issues with holes or slippage. The food at the end was minimal, race shirts were nice as was the medal, which lights up! The only downside was 10 year age groups, I would think a race of this size should have 5 year age groups. If you are looking to do a marathon in NJ, this may be a sure bet!

Good race overall

There were a lot of really good things about the race: * Racing has more or less gotten back to normal. Aside from the aide stations requiring runners to pick up water and gatorade off the tables as they ran by, you wouldn't have known COVID was a thing. It felt good. * There were some very pleasant views of the Atlantic Ocean as you run along the boardwalk--I'd say the total is a good 7 or 8 miles. * 3/4 zip has a nice design and is a nice change of pace from most races that just hand out t-shirts. The material feels a little cheap, but that's OK. The metal is unique too. * We had good running weather; I assume this is par for the course for NJ in October. * There are some very early hills (going up and down onramps/offramps around miles 2-5). After that, this race is as flat as a pancake. * I don't put any stock in 'spectators' as one of the three criteria for rating a race. But if that's your thing, there were a lot of people out on the course cheering runners on. Improvements I'd make: * Runners are going both ways on the boardwalk with no one trying to keep them in a lane. I was heading south around mile ten while the lead half-marathoners were coming north towards their finish, and I could see them having to weave around oncoming runners. * The boardwalk is open to walkers, and they may step in your way. So keep your eyes open. This isn't all that bad though. I had an easy time meeting up with my family afterwards for a race of this size. To close, I've run marathons all over the country, and I have to admit this is a pretty good race from an organizational standpoint. My word of caution to other runners coming from across the country to NJ is Atlantic City is just not a very nice place. Sure, the boardwalk and the beach are pleasant, but there is a very pronounced seedy element to the city.

Good Marathon, just needed more finish line food

The Atlantic City Marathon has a small to midsized field of runners, a small expo/packet pickup, and a nice offering of discounted hotels and restaurants. Unfortunately for the 2019 version of the event, a nor'easter hit the city by the ocean about two and half hours into it. It definitely was a factor, but luckily the 6 miles on the boardwalk were not nearly as slippery as might be expected. This was easily the wettest of the 18 Marathons I've completed. Despite the heavy rain and cold, I enjoyed the well designed course with the last half of it being flatter. There were also some scenic ocean views as you ran on the boardwalk, especially the beginning miles. I also liked the out and back/ loop sections in final half of the race because it provides an opportunity for mutual support for competitors. There was also some live music on the course and some cheering spectators, although more would have been appreciated. When you finally cross the coveted finish line, they announce your name and hometown. A nice and fitting touch for all you've endured! And last, but not least don't expect a feast at the finish area! There was only small bags of potato chips, pretzels, and bananas. But there was a nice complimentary beer. One final thought is a great one! There was a lot of friendly vibes felt and awesome comrodary.

well run small marathon

This is a great, well run, small seaside marathon. As will happen when you run by the beach in October, some huge winds (25 MPH +) arrived on a race day that was otherwise perfect (49 F and sunny). Parking at Ballys (start/finish) was easy, and there were ample facilities within the casino to support pre race activity. Not much of an expo, but with 650 marathon runners and 800 halves, you would not expect much. Cool long sleeve tech shirt hoodie. Nice well laid out course that included a loop through the marina area, a run through the tunnel, and a full run on the boardwalk starting at the absecon inlet. At the south end of the course, miles 15-21 got interesting as the wind by the longport/great egg inlet was fierce. I would not have thought I could run that slowly but the gps doesn't lie. Plenty of water stops and the course was well managed. As others have commented, nothing like coming back on the boardwalk at mile 23 and seeing the casinos in the distance. I finished in the middle of the pack, but there was no one within 200 yards of me either way so very cool to do my finishing kick with the crowd roaring. Only had to dodge a couple of tourists in the last mile. A lot of good October marathons (I have run Chicago, Baltimore & Portland), but this one definitely worth considering

Fast, but watch out for wind

This was a well-organized race with a fast course. The 2018 version was incredibly windy, obviously no fault of the organizers. From 8 to the end it seemed that no matter which direction it blew, it was always a headwind. Running on the boardwalk didn't really agree with me. I almost tripped on a loose board and my calves ached. I was happy to get back to the roads. Almost a third of the course is on the boardwalk, though. I'm not a fan of gels, but it seemed like they gave out an awful lot of it at this race Note: I ordered a medium t-shirt when I registered. By the time I got to the expo all they had was XL and 2XL.

Great Marathon & Half Marathon along the Ocean

This is a great small race with around 1,000 marathoners. The race course is mostly along the Ocean and some interesting areas of AC. It offers all the things the big races do without the crowds!

A well run race

The organizers really tried and it showed. I did not love running on the boardwalk; it was more difficult than I had imagined. I was fearful of slipping but I feel in retrospect it was more imagined. The after race party was well organized. The weather got quite warm but clearly that is not the fault of the organizers. The volunteers were great and the morning packet pick up was convenient and seamless. I LOVED the complimentary photos. A very nice extra!

Dodging tourists can be kind of fun!

10 - The t- shirt - a two-tone long sleeve shirt 9 - The finisher's medal - authentic to Atlantic City and the shore 8 - Seeing the bewildered expressions of casino visitors as they observed the strange breed of runners, marathoners, and health enthusiasts amongst their environs 7 - Enjoying a delicious Italian sub at White House the day before the marathon. 6 - Although there are long out and backs, these make for a spectator friendly course 5 - Flat course - it will be possible to get a PR here 4 - The Margate Police managing the crowded corner of runners and cars at the mile 17/21 interchange 3- Running the Boards - a unique experience&hearing the creaks and clanks of the wood, dodging tourists, enjoying the initial hustle/bustle and then the tranquility of the ocean once past the casinos 2- The post race party in Bally's beer garden courtyard - besides the free beer, some much needed salty clam chowder and cold Italian ice. 1 - Hitting the Boardwalks again at Mile 23 and seeing the casinos, and thus, the Finish Line, 3 miles away energizes you with a second wind.

Wish they would have planned better food at finish

I enjoyed the course, it was very manageable. I just wish they had focused more on the finishing line refreshments. They had tons of almost rotton bananas, overly ripe. They had tones of water bottles which were warm! They had dozens of dry bagels. I wish they would've focused more on the choices/options for the finish line.

Nice flat beach race

This is a nice flat course with a few small hills in the beginning off the boardwalk, then back onto the boardwalk, then into neighborhoods off the beach, returning back to the boards. The course this year was changed to remove a double loop and was an improvement. Most of the runners in this race run the half, which can be mentally challenging when they turn around at 11 miles and you keep going. Volunteers were excellent. There was no getting lost in this race, course was well marked with ample water stops on a unseasonably warm day. I couldn't run the time I would have liked due to the heat, but usually it's cool and windy at the beach this time of year. I wish I took the advice of others to stay off the boardwalk the night before as a $5 parking pass for the weekend at Resorts is in the race packet and most drive to the parking garage. Post race amenities were nice, clam chowder, Italian Ice, and a free craft beer. Medals were beautiful. The shirts are a nice quality and design.

Great flat marathon with perfect weather condition

It was my first ever marathon in 2015 and I ran again in 2016. Great weather and nice flat course. About 2/3 of runners do Half and use turn around point on the end of the boardwalk. Full marathoners run 2 circles in Vetnor city. Book hotel in advance and use marathon code discount. Saturday night as usually crazy expensive, but if you want to stay till Monday you can upgrade and move to boardwalk.

I had a nice time. Much better than in 1998.

Atlantic City was my first marathon in 1998 and my 100th in 2009. I enjoyed it in 2016 and I've already registered for 2017. The boardwalk was nice, but it would have been slippery if it was raining. Parts of the road portion of the course had a steep horizontal slope, and I was unable to run on the crown. I felt that I had to tilt sideways in order to stay upright. The race photographs that were included in the registration fee were excellent.

Race: Great. City: eh

(I doubled this race with Monster Mash Marathon in Dover Delaware the day before). I avoided the craziness of the casino area by staying in a cheap hotel in Absecon (15 min drive). Very smart idea. I highly recommend NOT staying in the nearby casino hotels. (My hotel was $50 a night and super nice!) Parking wasn't bad- just getting there was a bit hectic. (you have to pay to park on expo day and race day FYI) My GPS definitely got a workout! (FYI: If you fly into PHL or BWI - you need an EXpass for tolls!) Finding the expo in the massive casino was a bit hectic. I asked 4 security/workers before one finally knew what I was talking about. The race course was nice, although SUPER flat. I liked running on the boardwalk. You run two loops on one end of the course so the mile markers (very visible feather flags) are a bit confusing at first. (Ex: Mile 13.1 and 19 are a block apart) The last mile was a bit congested with tourists on the boardwalk who had NO clue what was happening. I even had one guy ask me 'Are you ok? What's wrong?' as I passed by. Perhaps better signage and some barricades would be warranted. I was towards the back of the pack and had to dodge lots of folks. Definitely not my favorite race, but I checked off the state, so I'm happy.

Weird Course

An overall good race with good organization. The expo was held in the ballroom of a casino and required a lot of walking to find. The same casino provided a nice indoor staging area for the start/finish. Reduced parking at the casino was appreciated. The course was generally good but I didn't really like the double loop out and back between miles 13 and 23. Without timing mats it seemed fairly easy to cheat during this part. The miles on the boardwalk were fun. Lots of aid stations with friendly volunteers. Good food choices post race including beer and clam chowder. The shirts are nice but unisex so size accordingly. A very nice medal. Overall a good way to get New Jersey. If your thirsty head to Glasstown Brewery in Millvale. One of my favorite micro breweries

Surprising, scenic and enjoyable small marathon

I signed up for AC Marathon due to convenience, but was really surprised by how organized and enjoyable this race is. A small race, and super easy logistics. Packet pickup is at Bally's the day before, and getting in and out was stress-free. Race a.m. was also a breeze and loved that we were able to wait inside the casinos prior to the start. The start was quick and painless. The race itself is fast. Even with a headwind for a good portion of it, I managed to PR. They have experienced pacers and with a small race, it's easy to fall in with runners who are at the same pace. I was concerned the double loop portion would be mentally challenging, and it would have been if I didn't have company. You finish on the Boardwalk and post race is amazing. They have a beer garden, plus plenty of recovery food and drink. After indulging in that, I went next door to Johnny Rockets for a milkshake and then did some gambling. I took a star off for spectators only because there are none for a good portion of the race, but that never bothers me. I find that the more I do, the more I enjoy the smaller races. Overall, a great race, with great organization, and scenic ocean views.

Great race for NJ

I loved this race: 1) very caring organizers who tried their very best to let everyone finish 2) very safe course with coned off areas and people making sure you knew the route 3) plenty of racer support for water, etc.

Probably not ideal for fast runners, first-timers

It's lonely at the front. If you're doing anything around 3:25-3:30 or faster, the biggest downside to this race is how desolate it feels in the second half. Once you're off the boardwalk and into Margate, it doesn't feel as much like a race (unless you're hanging in the 3:25 group, maybe) so much as a lone wolf long run - an interesting challenge, sure, but maybe not your ideal experience. Considering the course runs through seasonal shore towns in the offseason, there's actually a decent amount of spectator support. Obviously, it's not as much in the Ventnor/Margate/Longport stretch, but there are still folks out there - and the volunteers are generally great. Still, if you're new to marathons, it's not going to be as good as some of the bigger regional events. Wind can be a major factor, and certainly was for 2014. The more exposed sections of the course can be brutal - wind off the bay in Margate made it feel like you were running into a wall. The boardwalk's fun - at least when oblivious conventioneers and tourists aren't walking into your path. They generally respond to yelling, at least. Organization is solid, on-course support is good, and if you nab a casino hotel room on the boards, getting to the start couldn't be easier. As for the course itself, if the wind somehow isn't a factor, it's built for a BQ time. A handful of hills sneak in during the first 10K, but they're overpasses and a connector tunnel, so the net climb is zero. You can fly on the boards (super comfy ride!), and the loops in Margate aren't going to wreck your time (again, as long as the wind isn't up). It's also more of a relaxed feel than a lot of races; if you're looking for something smaller and more intimate, rather than a 25,000-person monster, this is a good choice.

Great race with nice stretches on Boardwalk

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this race. I now live in NY but spent a fair amount of time down the shore in Atlantic City growing up; thus this race had some personal nostalgia. Even for novices to the area, you will enjoy the course running for approx 6-8 miles (I don't know the exact number) along the Boardwalk with the remaining sections winding through neighborhoods in Atlantic City, Ventnor and Margate. I thought it was great how the race utilized the Boardwalk in three stages: the Start, early-to-middle part of the course and the Finish, which was not wearisome but rather provided nice pick-me-ups throughout the morning with periodic views of the ocean and spectators. It did indeed feel like a quasi-shore experience even though there was no running on sand. This was my 17th marathon and I thought the logistics were fantastic. Granted, this is a relatively small race with only 5,000 runners in all, but there was no need to worry about pre-race transportation or hassle with Finish Line hold-ups. I left my hotel only 25 minutes before the race and was able to easily walk to the Start Line, which was bustling with energy. Similarly, the Finish was right where the race had started, an area full of hotels. The swag is great. Nice long sleeve tech shirt and huge glitter-covered medal. I hope to be back some day to race again!

A good one

I spent some time trying to figure out the best choice for my NJ race (state #49) and am glad I picked this one (NJ seemed to have some poor choices). Pros: 1. Not that hard to get to about 1 1/2 hours from Phila. airport, and there's a train that only cost $10 into Center City, and my wife and I stayed there the next day, and that's a great city to visit if you have the time; 2. Good hotels (if a little expensive) right on the start/finish line and nexto the expo we got upgraded by Caesars Palace, which was nice; 3. Well organized start and finish with good pace groups; 4. Course is fine - mostly flat, a lot on the ocean and enough turns from around M1 -7 and 13-18 to keep it from being a totally boring up and back on the boardwalk (which was easy to run on); 5. Good course support, with PowerGels at just about every aid station; 6. Announcer called out everyone's first name as they finished; 7. Nice medal. 8. Instant results on computer; 9. Decent enough food after 10. Good weather, except see below. Cons: 1. Huge wind (obviously they can't control that, but it must have been 20-25 mph). 2. Age groups by 10 years (but it's a relatively small race, with 800 finishers or so); 3. Those hotels... 4. A lot of out and back (but you get to see the ocean so that's good). 5. Atlantic City

Okay At Best

This race itself was okay at best. I did it with a group of friends, so I was there for the social aspect of the race and that was very satisfying so overall I had a good experience. Though the course is terrible. It started on the boardwalk and immediately ran off it. The first 6 or so miles were along highway overpasses and ramps, through run down neighborhoods and through old, littered, and graphite industrial and commercial zones. Not scenic at all! Then back on the boardwalk for several miles, that was nice. Then around mile 14, the course meandered through nice residential areas until mile 23 when we're back on the boardwalk. On the boardwalk, people were annoyed by the race, not at all supportive. Some people wouldn't even move out of the way, I was dodging folks on weak legs. Worst part about the race couldn't be helped, it was super windy! I was glad it didn't rain as that was in the forecast. Volunteers were great and some cheered their hearts out. The post race food was delicious clam chowder and soft pretzels! That rocked for sure! One of my friends had medical issues after and I was surprised that the med tent didn't have stretchers; my friend was lying on the ground. Parking to get to the race was a hassle in the garages and then finding the start line was a bit confusing too, plan ahead if you are doing this race. The race medal is rather neat, it blinks and doubles as a beer bottle opener. Overall, the race wasn't that great, an unimpressive course in an unattractive city without much else to offer runners but drinking and gambling. I wouldn't recommend it as a destination race or a race for a first timer, but for locals or regional runners with low standards for race quality, then this is an okay race. Read my detailed take on the race on my blog: http://empoweredbyrunning.com/?p=550

Loved the Course

The course is generally flat & easy. You begin & end at the same spot on the boardwalk. First 7 mi takes you through the north end of AC. Then the next 4-5 mi are on the boardwalk which at this time of day it's OK. Then you do an out & back to Margate. Last 3 mi are on the boardwalk which was a bit crowded especially at the last mile, but unfortunately it wasn't blocked off from pedestrians. If it wasn't for the strong winds from the lingering storm I would have gotten a PR. The after race food was great!!!! Rita's water ice, Philly soft pretzels, Johnson's popcorn, Honest Ade, & orange slices. The best spread I've had at a race. The medal was awesome too!!! It has a blinking light for the lighthouse & it's a bottle opener too. Definitely recommend this race.

nice route, terrible wind, disappointing spectator

I don't think the city even knew there was a race going on.....sad....no pasta dinner, very little recognition from the city that anything was going on. Route was nice but very few spectators. Lots of police support although I assume they are paid. Boardwalk was great to run on, lots of water stops but more than once I asked for water and was given Gatorade. I know they're volunteers so no big deal but did upset my stomach. oh well. Has potential but I'm not sure the city needs or wants my business. I came a long way for this and won't come back. No particular reason, just been there done that. thanks

Great job by the race organizers. The expo was well organized. Water, Gatorade and energy gels were plentiful along the course. I will definitely return.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to run this race. It was my 23rd marathon and I consider it to be a 'hidden gem'.. I will be telling my friends about it. I am glad you are continuing despite the devastation from the hurricane... AC is a great and fun city to run !!

fabulous w/ 1 discouraging qualm

I had a wonderful race, time, trip and experience w/ new friends, and athletes. I ran for the first time w/ a pacer, named Jaquae Wilkins. I hope I'm spelling it right. We would probably spell her name Jackie normally. There were about 30 of us that stayed together for the whole race laughing, and we crossed the finish on time as promised. HERE is my complaint, MY CHIP didn't work, so I am not in the books as doing the race. MAD!!!!!!!

Easy

This was the second marathon for the weekend, and it met my expectations. I ran the half a few years back and knew what to expect: a well-organized race, plenty of on-course support and a scenic run along the boardwalk beneath the shadows of the casinos contrasted by a visit to the quiet side of the island. The expo was improved (no longer just a few people behind a counter) and was a much quicker visit this time around. Finishing just under 4:00 there were enough runners on the course over the last few miles that pedestrians were aware of us and for the most part did a decent job of being courteous and giving us room to soldier on to the finish. Volunteers were as helpful and encouraging as they could be. I couldn't ask for more. Hotels are plentiful in the start/finish/expo area, as are restaurants and outlet stores. It really is a 'park and forget the car' area with plenty to do within walking distance. I'm sure I'll be back.

Well organized....just not much local enthusiasm

One of the flattest courses I have ever run (have done 11 marathons). If I am ever pushing for a BQ again some day, I will do this one again. I am coming off two straight years of injuries (torn achilles at New York marathon...then chronic hamstring problems last year). This year I just trained nice and easy to give my body time to recover and was not expecting to do well.....however the flatness of the course allows a low time to sneak up on you. About half way through the course I realized I could pull off a half-decent time...and did it. Organization of this course is just fine. I agree with other posters that gatorade had big variances of dilution from stop to stop.....this shouldn't bother you too much. This was the first marathon I ran which was also run with a half marathon. It has a huge drop-off in runners after you pass the half marathon turn. This shouldn't be too bad...except then the marathon course goes off the boardwalk for about 10 miles into an area that is really just not that interesting. Once you get back on the boardwalk at mile 23.....the trick is to hold back and not burn out to early. You can see the Bally's Casino (where the finish line is)....but it looks just one mile away when in reality it is over three miles away. It takes everything to keep from going too hard too early. Don't expect a fabulous feast at the finish line....but they have plenty of the usual staples (bread, bananas, oranges, yogurt....I heard there was chowder somewhere but never saw it (wasn't looking too hard cuz I had to leave). All in all... a good race that should be a BQ target for anyone needing one.

NO POST-RACE MASSAGE; Flat Course; Great Medal

This was my New Jersey marathon in my 50-state quest. Overall a decent marathon and I would recommend it for all 50-staters, as I believe this is the best NJ has to offer. The one big disappointment, however, was that there were no post-race massages, which many runners (myself included) rely on. The course itself was boring, albeit flat, but I think it was the best Atlantic City could do. The boardwalk parts were the best in terms of scenery. There needs to be improvement in marshaling pedestrians on the boardwalk for back-of-pack runners (like myself). The SWAG was top-shelf, including the goody backpack, shirt and amazing medal with a little working light house. High marks for that. The race organization was fair with plenty of water stops. The Mile 24 marker was missing, however. Overall a decent experience and would definitely recommend for anyone needing a New Jersey marathon. Could be great but not quite there yet...

better for experienced racers

Pretty much everything that is within the organizers' control is done well. My only comment to them is that the water-stop volunteers need better training to a) mix the Gatorade at the right strength so it doesn't vary so much among stops, and b) back up a little so that the runners who aren't taking fluid at that stop can get through without dodging overzealous volunteers, especially in the narrower parts of the boardwalk. (Hint: If someone is carrying a water bottle, he probably doesn't need you to stand in his way with a paper cup.) Also, there appears to still be some work to do on the timing. My preliminary results were more accurate than my final results (but the final was a little faster, so I'm not complaining). The long stretch off the boardwalk in the second half is really boring. It's the first race where I was conscious of how bored I was. It just looks like . . . New Jersey. And very little crowd support. The boardwalk stretch is great if you don't mind dodging pedestrians and bikes and rolling chairs. I was worried that it would be a problem, but it's really no different from going out on a training run. But if you're experienced enough to handle not enough people off the boardwalk and too many people on the boardwalk, it's a good race. The medal is awesome. The free pre-race dinner was okay, as were the post-race refreshments.

Wrong time

First, I should note that my time according to the web site was off by about a minute. In fact, there is even a race photo of me crossing the finish in 3:04:06 however they have me just over 3:05. It's slower than I'd like, and not a PR issue, it does disallow me from registering for Boston with the '5 minutes faster' crew. The gatorade mixing at early aid stations was terrible. Too concentrated. Were they even tasting the product they handed out? The people involved with the race were great, and I loved AC. Most local folks seemed pretty clueless about the race though, maybe more could be done locally to publicize it. The flat course was nice, a bit windy and it seemed like the wind was in my face in every direction. Beautiful running along the ocean though.

This is a hidden gem of the fall season

Fun, flat and scenic. What more do you want? This should not be considered as a major big city marathon. But if you are looking for a good run within the NYC/Philly area this fit the bill. They get the big things right. Lots of fluids and gels along the way. Clocks at most mile markers. Good shirt and a very very unique medel (I won't spoil it for you). A good portion of the run is on the boardwalk which is unique great fun. People stroll, hotels on one side and the ocean on the other. Yes, there are some dull sections through housing developments and highway ramps but the good parts are what you remember.

Great run around AC and along the boardwalk

I am working on the 50 state challenge and AC looked the best to me for my New Jersey race. The expo was small but the race only has 1400 runners. The pasta dinner was good but they had issues keeping the pasta coming fast enough. There was a great selection of other foods so you could always keep your plates full. The course is very nice with a few inclines to overpasses and a tunnel and you get to spend several miles on the boardwalk and be able to see the casinos and the ocean. The weather was great and there were several pace groups available. Getting to the start and leaving the finish is very easy. The food at the finish was okay. Oranges, banannas, popcorn, beer, gatorade and water. The medal is awesome and the t-shirt is very nice. If you need a New Jersey race, I recommend AC.

Great small marathon

Just ran today's AC marathon, and can't say enough about how well-organized and nice this event was. If you like a smaller marathon, this is a good one for you. Nice expo considering the size of the event. Great women's fit shirts - finally a race shirt that actually fits me. Very supportive volunteers. Not tons of spectators once the 1/2 marathoners are off the course, but the people out there were great, and I never felt like I was alone on the course. There were also always enough other runners around that I always had company. Great finisher medal, which included a lighthouse that actually has a little light that you can turn on - I wonder how many people didn't even notice this. All in all, I have only positive things to say about the AC marathon.

Some nice perks, and a few downfalls

This was my first marathon, but not my first long distance race so I have some idea of what to expect as a back of the pack runner. So the pluses - Nice free buffet Great medal Nice volunteers Some good freebies in your race packet including a nice free tech shirt. Actual cheerleaders on the course (which is nice because there aren't too many spectators) Water stations never ran out of water (which has happened to me before) Negatives- They can't close down the boardwalk, so if you're running slow you get to run through a lot of random tourists gawking at you (or ignoring you). I didn't see Gatorade until around mile 13, or at least wasn't offered any. By then I'd lost a lot of salt...note to self, carry own electrolytes next time. Running with the half marathoners is a little disheartening...especially when they turn around to run back to the finish you've just passed. THe course is a little boring outside of the boardwalk, and the out and backs make it feel like it's going on forever. Just lots of neighborhoods, particularly one with a lot of what appears to be empty vacation homes. Some mishaps in timing and pictures mean I didn't get an official finish time and my pictures got swapped with some guy (so now I can't find them). A little disappointing for a first marathon to not get either of those. Definitely wasn't because I had the timer chip on wrong...double checked that :) All in all, a lot of people told me this was a bad course for a first timer. THis is probably a nice race for people who know what they're doing and can finish up quickly to avoid some of the issues I encountered.

Better than expected with room for improvement

Based on comments from previous years, I entered the 2011 race with moderately low expectations. Staging a marathon anywhere is not an easy feat, and I commend the organizing committee for creating a race that exceeded my expectations. Good job by all, though there are some tweaks that could make this a truly outstanding race. This is an extremely flat marathon run along the shore with enough diversions to keep the runner interested. Two hills, both overpasses, are all the incline you'll get. Enough GU is handed out, lots of water stations with plastic cups (boo!), and the traffic control from the AC, Ventor and Margate police were all outstanding. Also, shout out to the cheerleaders at the start, finish and mile 18/20.5, and the small bands rocking out throughout the course. Pretty sporty headwind while running south (miles 8-16, and 19-20), but that's not on the organizers. Sure, the last four Boardwalk miles were 'shared' with the morning tourists and locals, but their curiosity in the festivities adds to the charm. Here's where I think the race can get better: - As mentioned, need to get Gatorade or some form of electrolytes distributed before mile 12 and at the finish line. And please get rid of the plastic cups. They create a slipping hazard after they get crunched up. - Felt the pre-race morning activities were slightly disorganized. Never heard a starting gun, or horn, or whistle, just saw the herd start moving at 8:05. Then everyone shoehorned themselves through the start/finish line to get chips activated. - Just me, but I wasn't wild about the race shirt. Looked like an old USFL Boston Breakers wave with a gaudy lighthouse on the back. The medal, on the other hand, rocked! - The pre-race expo could use an info table to answer questions. The expo could use some merchandise for sale. And the pre-race program could use some more pertinent q-and-a info, as it was nothing more than an advertisement for Atlantic City casinos. - If I could tweak the course to break up the 8-mile south monotony, I would somehow turn into the Margate stretch after mile 13 instead mile 17. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice race with just the right amount of runners. Any more and you could have some logistical issues, especially on the very tight first turn off the Boardwalk. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in West Egg Harbor, 10 minutes away, and that staff couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. Highly recommended for those running next year. Having scratched off New Jersey on my 50-state quest, I'm not sure if I'll ever be back.

It was awesome!

I ran last year 2010 and what a difference! Love the course,it was not boring and just running on the boards to longport, you couldnt ask for a better day! There were plenty of water stations. yes we could have used more energy drinks. maybe some oranges would be nice. my time was also lower then what was posted. The only neg was when I finished there were no one giving out water,, we could have used some cold water. love the area after the race with all the vendors. Thanks to Barry and his committee for doing a wonderful job!

Could be better

This was not a bad race. Course was ok and you got to see some of Atlantic City you would not normally see. The first 7 miles of the course had a few hills but gets super flat after that. Here are my Cons *No gatorade until mile 12 so half marathoners only had water *No Gatorade for the last 4 miles which can be dangerous since it was a bit warm and most runners need electrolytes at that point of a marathon *Water and Gatorade served in plastic cups until around mile 14-15 which was then some paper cups. Plastic cups you can't squeeze and drink since it will crack but most importantly its not very green and bad for the environment *No PA system or announcements of instruction at the start of the race nor was there a Nat'l Anthem. At 8:05 the race just started *Timing inaccurate. My net time was a minute faster then what I had on my watch *Marathon Website stated Expo on 6th flr. Ballroom which was actually on 2nd flr. *Rude volunteers at the expo. One lady snatched saftey pins out of my hand after I picked them up off the table *No signage to direct you where to go for number pickup nor a define spot for Marathon, half marathon and so forth. The set up at the table was confusing since you approached at the corner of a 'L' set up so people were inadvertently cutting others *Chip check table was in the middle of the room away from the pick up tables which should have been the last table after number and goody bag *Volunteers giving out wrong info *No Gatorade in the finish area which again runners need electrolyte replenishment not beer *No porto potties in the finish area...at least I didn't see them *Marathon Website stated late checkout on Sun at all participating hotels. When I arrived at the Tropicana the front desk staff was not pleasant and when late checkout was requested they had no idea what I was talking about. The late checkout was not honored. I called reservations and they also had no idea what I was talking about *This is a coastal race so I would imagine there will always be a headwind I did enjoy myself but probably won't run this race again. There are better destination marathons to run during the fall/October time of year

Timing was not accurate!

I have run this marathon many times, and this is my 64th and my son's first. The race is very well organized, fantastic people running the program, course is great except for the run back and forth through Margate! However, this being my son's first race, I purposely ran at his side offering all kinds of encouragement, and wisdom, to do all I could to help him finish. To that end, he never left my side, and in fact, we crossed the finish line holding our hands raised in celebration of his accomplishment.... but to our surprise, the new timing system showed that we had finished 14 seconds apart. Now 14 seconds to either of us is meaningless..... but it begs the question.... how accurate were the time!!!! Keep up the great work, the race has come a very long way, but I'd check the time keeper out before using again.

Good first marathon

My first ever Marathon! I was just so happy that I actually completed it that most other things did not matter. I liked the flat course, and I stayed with a pacer group for the most part which made things a bit easier as you are running with a group talking about stuff. The spectators were supportive and encouraging. There was quite a bit head-wind for the most part and we thought we will get favorable tail-wind towards the end, but the wind died down towards the end. Loved the T-shirt and medal. The only CON I have is that the official time was about 5 minutes more than my GPS device and my wrist watch. There were few other people who had the same complaint. Not sure if all our watches went bonkers or the official time was fast.

Pretty Course and a well organized event

This was my 19th AC of my 27 total Marathons. It is overall a pretty course, although I do not care for the neighborhood stretch between 18 and 22 miles. The heat seems to build up in that area, and the views are just so-so. The crowd was very supportive and focused except for the last couple of miles where people wander out on the race path. But I find that aspect a rather charming part of this race. I have always enjoyed the location and the course, and the event organization has improved considerably.

I've ran better races

Very disappointing for the 53rd running of this event. One would think the kinks would have been worked out by now, not so. Long lines, no saftey pins, and rude volunteers at the expo. Race wasn't much better. No gatorade until mile 12 and not at every water stop after that, nor at the finish. Running on the boardwalk was horrible. The runners are not separated from the spectators and I don't think they even knew a race was going on. I will definitely not run this one again.

Great way to see Atlantic City!

My 32nd marathon! I loved the finisher t-shirt, the free pasta dinner, the expo and running on the boardwalk. They could improve it next year by having more clearly marked mile markers on the boardwalk, Gatorade at every station (I was pretty dehydrated at the end) and vaseline. Other than that - a good small race!

Who turned on the wind??

Well, what can I say but absolutely awesome! I ran the 2003 AC marathon and that didn't even compare to 2011! The city, the event, organization did a 100% 360 degree turn from 2003. Shocking, because in 2003, there were only about 200 marathoners in which I placed third in my age group and 19th overall. Organizers wanted this race to improve over the years. They have bragging rights now!!! The best looking finishers medal I have ever received. The best looking tech shirt and actual goodie bag! I have no 'CONS' for this race except the wind and my final time but that was my fault! It was funny to see how clueless the boardwalk crowd was in wondering what was going on! :)

Good race, which will continue to improve

Pros -Pasta dinner I have run in over 60 marathons and this was one of the best pasta dinners with great food, different selections, and a nice venue -Long shelve shirt w/ a nice design and NO sponsors, the medal was small, however good quality -The volunteers, traffic control were very vocal and friendly -The pace teams were awesome especially the 3:35 guy, although he was a little fast in a couple of early miles he settled in nicely and hit the mark -The race staff listens to suggestions and wants to improve their event for the RUNNERS benefit -Course had a few overpasses and a tunnel during the beginning; however you run mi 8-16 on the boardwalk and mi 22 to the finish back on the boardwalk, these miles were different than running on asphalts -The 3rd oldest marathon in the US 53 yrs! Cons -Gatorade sooner on the course, and have an electrolyte drink at the finish, H20 only is unsat & more food -GU 100yds prior to the H20, sounds picky h-ever spreading these out makes less of a crowd and optimal use -Louder PA announcing system for the start with more directions -Less wind, just kidding I know you can't control the weather Overall, I would run this race again. Although casinos are the main attraction there are things for families to do on the boardwalk during the run. If you are looking for a fast fall NE marathon add this race to your list.

OK race not sure I would do it again

Expo was okay, very small not many vendors. Stayed at Bally's Hotel, will not stay there again. Knew we were in trouble when we checked in and the staff at the desk was very rude when I asked about late checkout, she said absolutely not and would not even consider the late checkout time. Up all night due to partying in room next door, called front desk with no results. Start line for the race was too crowded, if they ever did the national anthem we could not hear it. Not many spectators on the course at all until you hit the boardwalk and then they would not move. Organizers need to mark the boardwalk if they can. You had to dodge the pushcarts, Sunday strollers and walkers the entire way back on the boardwalk. Very difficult to maneuver. Was a little concerned with the hot weather that there was no gatorade or powerade on the course before Mile 13, water only. Saw alot of runners walking after this point, not sure if it was from the heat and not hydrating. Post race was good and it was nice sitting inside the casino while we were waiting.

It's all about the wind

Registration: Very smooth. Expo: Packet pickup for a breeze for me. Some other folks said that they waited a long time. Vendor opportunities were a little limited Race T-shirt: Very cool long sleeved technical shirt Pre-race support/setup: No issues here. You can stay in the casino out of the wind until race time Weather for 2011: Cool and sunny for the first half of the race. As mentioned, the wind was a big challenge for the second half of the race. Course: one only hill to speak off - it's a highway ramp in the first 5 miles. Otherwise, flat. Nice views of the beach, casino, Lucy the Elephant. Spectator density is on the low side (especially for the second half of the race) but they are very friendly. Water/Gatorade/GU were plentiful. As mentioned, the wind, the wind and the wind will determine your performance. Post-race support: Plentiful and un-congested. Medal: Nice size and colors. Location: Parts of AC can be seedy. Catch an indian summer day and you get a sense of a old time, Boardwalk empire AC

Great spectators, good course, will return..

I chose to use this marathon as preparation for NYC 2011, I really enjoyed the course, the spectators and volunteers really helped keep me motivated ( especialy in the later miles), well organized, I did not find the expo too impressive, overall great marathon, plan to return.

boring once you leave the boardwalk/casino area

I love visiting AC more than a few times a year. We stay at Borgata - which I highly recommend - and then cab to the start. I liked the new course this year. I loved running up the one hill over the freeway. It's fun to pass the spectators outside of the casinos. The boardwalk is wide enough there to accommodate spectators as well as runners. Once you leave the boardwalk, it is a long race. Turning off the highway to run though a few neighborhoods felt like a maze from which I would NEVER exit. it is also exasperating to dodge sunday strollers the last few miles, who seemed to have no idea a race was taking place. I would do this marathon again because I love AC and Borgata takes good care of us.

This race has come so far!

I am a local girl (Ocean City) who has shied away from this race because of its bad reputation as disorganized, boring and poorly run. However, I knew there was new management and a lot of people were pretty encouraged by the changes, so I decided to give the half-mary a try. So glad I did!! Excellent race! PROS * very well organized * great shirt (that actually fits - I love when they don't run too big!) * amazing post-race food (blueberry champagne and chocolate fondue among the deliciousness to be had!) * enjoyable course along the boards and through AC * raffle to win $25K * the chance to stand inside before the race to keep warm - although the day was absolutely beautiful and wasn't needed this year, I could see that being a plus on a blustery/wet year CONS Can't really think of too many - the water stations could have been a little better organized, but that is a very minor complaint Great job, race organizers! You have really turned this race around and I will definitely be doing it in the future!

Great race, PR course for me, fun times!

I thought the race was very well organized. Check-in took a little longer than I am used to. Probably stood in line in Bally's for 20 minutes. The other negative was that the start was a bit cramped but that is because the boardwalk was under construction near the start line; this should not be a problem next year. My last complaint was that the last 3 miles of the race were along the boardwalk, which was awesome; what was bad was that there were so many people walking along the boardwalk that you were constantly dodging people - not something you want to do the last 3 miles of a marathon. It would have been nice if they had a few volunteers to keep the path clear. The amenities were perfect, course was beautiful, weather was great, and water stations were well stocked and well manned; they could have used some GU or something, but luckily I brought my own.

Boardwalk Run

I ran the half marathon this year and was most impressed with the course setting, half of which was on Atlantic City's spacious boardwalk. The non-boardwalk section between miles 1.5 and 8 left the Trump Plaza and Trump Taj Mahal behind to head inland to visit... the Trump Marina. But hey, it just wouldn't be AC without The Donald's name everywhere, and the only spectators at all on this barren section were Trump employees offering some encouragement. The course is flat, although some will probably count the one freeway overpass as a hill. The support along the course by the AC police and volunteers was impressive. The police were out in force, and despite the growing traffic jams in this busy resort, I never once was concerned about traffic or my safety. Some things that need to be improved: Packet pick up was extremely slow. Also, there weren't any vendors at the packet pick up location. I would think that, with 3K runners, it wouldn't be difficult to recruit some vendors, especially since UA and Nike have stores within a half-mile of the pick up. Mile markers need to be placed accurately. The second mile marker was actually at 1.82 miles. (Yeah, I know this happens occasionally even at the "big" races). Lastly, timing mats need to be placed more strategically to ensure that everyone is running the full distances of their 10K, half and marathon courses. Too many distances, too many fluid game-day plans, and too much temptation for some, I'm afraid. I'll be back for the half, although I probably won't run the full. When I finished at 9:30, the boardwalk was still mostly deserted, but I felt a bit sorry for the marathoners coming through in the following hours having to slice their way through pedestrians over the last mile or two. People were clueless that they ought to show some courtesy to this string of runners, running on fumes at the tail end of their marathon.

On course, it rocks!

The pre-race details are not crisp and professional yet. On course, everything runs beautifully, which is what really matters to me! Great volunteers; great police support! Varied and fun course, and I agree that it can prove to be fast. I really need to make this a target race one year as I think I could easily garner a personal best here. Thank you for a wonderful day. For next year, figure out what time the dinner is actually going to start, plan for table turn-over at dinner (!), and provide access to a detailed course map with street names to help with family willing to go all over the course to cheer! Thanks! Had fun!!!

Pleasant Surprise!

I had very low expectations after reading comments about this race several years ago. I decided to run the half this year as a tuneup race and was very happy with it. Nice, flat course (a lot on the boardwalk); good traffic control; and an excellent start/finish area with easy parking. Amenities were great, with plenty of post-race food and a great band. Yes, there are some bugs to work out like the kids' race (disaster!) and delayed awards presentation, but overall this was an excellent mid-size race and I will be back for the full next year!

Nice race, great medal, very good dinner

This was a very nice race but it does need to have a few improvements. First, packet pickup was a little disorganized. There needs to be a separation between those who are pre-registered, and those who are not. Also, the information that I received said it was on the 5th floor of the hotel; however, it was on the 6th floor. Not a real big deal, but that should be accurate. Also, all notices said that the dinner was starting at 6:00 when in fact it started at 6:30. The dinner was very good and had something for everyone. They also said that there would be discount coupons to local vendors but there weren't. The course is very flat and easy to follow. The only complaint regarding the race is that the available water for finishers was 20 feet from the finish line. I didn't grab any water because i was worried about being run over. That water needs to be moved out to allow for more room. Overall, it was a good marathon that I would run again.

A nice, little marathon

The only truly bad thing about this race was waiting in line for a solid hour to pick up my packet at hotel registration the day before (they only had two people working the desk). Otherwise I was very pleased. The dinner the night before was EXCELLENT! The food was amazing, with live music, and all complementary for half and full marathoners! They need a better sound system at the starting line. It was hard to hear directions. The course went by some seedier neighborhoods and highway exit ramps at the start, but once it got out to Margate it was beautiful. The water stops were spaced out perfectly and staffed with enthusiastic and helpful volunteers. There was barely any crowd support along the way, even on the boardwalk it seemed most people had no idea a marathon was going on. The post-race amenities were great. Plenty of water, mango juice, hot dogs, bananas and oranges, bagels, etc. I wasn't crazy about the shirt (size M practically comes down to my knees) but the medal was very nice. The only thing the race directors can't do anything about is the wind. It was a beautiful sunny day in the 50's, but I spent much of the race running headlong into gusts of wind. Overall it was a nice change of pace from big-city marathons. If you want a small, flat marathon at the beach, give this one a shot.

Great View of the Ocean - Will Return in 2010

Atlantic City was my first marathon (1998) and that year I was very disappointed with the race. In 2009, I returned to Atlantic City for my 100th marathon (plus 36 ultras) to see if anything had changed. This year I had a wonderful time. I enjoyed running around the pedestrians on the Boardwalk, and the view of the ocean was really something special (much better than other, more aggressively marketed New Jersey marathons). The parking and race day packet pickup in Boardwalk Hall was extremely convenient as well. Traffic control was excellent. They even gave me bib #100. What more could I ask for? I will recommend the Atlantic City Marathon to other runners, and I look forward to returning for the third time in 2010.

Nice, flat course with no frills and no crowd.

I like a no-frills race. If you're old school, this one is for you. Flat as a pancake. Multiple out-and-backs. Running on the boardwalk. If you're expecting Boston, NYC or Disney amenities, stay away. If you're looking for a nice, little, no-hassle, flat marathon, come on down.

Not bad and will only get better

Considering that this race changed management and dates at the last minute, it is not a bad event at all; and given the short time frame the new race director was given, it ended up being a really well executed event. All four races (marathon, half, 10K and 5K) were well marked and the majority of the races were along the famous boardwalk of Atlantic City, which made for easy access to the start/finish from any casino hotel along the strip. The post-run food was better than races three times the size of this one and the volunteers were extremely friendly and helpful. The awards ceremony was very nice and the prizes were among the nicest I've seen. The only real negative was that the packet pick-up was the morning of the race. It would have been nice to have that the day before just to avoid the anxiety that morning; however, the volunteers were quite proficient in getting people their packets quickly. Now that the new race director has this one under their belt, this event will only get better and better. Given the fact that it is held in mid-November, the weather might be an issue but this year, it couldn't have been better with temperatures getting into the mid-60's by noon. If you need a New Jersey race, I highly endorse this one.

Great potential, but much still to improve.

I hadn't ever run this race, but I'm from New Jersey, so I figured I would give it a shot. The good things about this race: 1. It's easy to sign up in the NY area AFTER the major marathons. If you ran NYC or Marine Corp and didn't do so well, then here is a race to try and still get a good Boston time. Philly used to be that way, but now they are closed out early. Changing the date to mid-November was a good thing, and for their sake I hope they keep it that way. 2. GREAT pre-race meal. The highlight of this event was the pre-race dinner. Good band, GREAT food, $5 DONATION! One of the best meals I have had before a marathon. 3. Simple and flat course; if you get good weather (like we had this year), you could really do well here. 4. Crowd support. Light but enthusiastic. 5. Spectator-friendly course. Your significant other (or other friends and relatives) can run in a shorter race with you (and turn off at their turnaround). Or you can recruit your family and friends to spread out on the course and be there at sections with aid. If they stay at the start to see you off, then go to mile 9 where the marathon turns unto Atlantic Ave.; they can watch you pass five times (start, mile 9, 15, 19 23), but then they need to scoot to the finish! A bicycle is great for this! The bad things about this race: 1. Long stretches between water stops. Don't depend on getting water in the first seven miles. I was shocked to run past the start/finish at mile 6 and NOT be given water! Expect to have to run stretches of five or six miles before getting water. It appears a couple of the water stops never materialized. 2. Mile markers: They were small, orange, cryptic numbers on the street. To run this race with accurate splits, you need a Garmin. 3. Directional signs. Few and far between. And the ones they had were small. At turn #1 there was no sign and just a person to tell you to turn around. However, she forgot to tell me until I was 10 yards past her and THEN she shouted to me to come back! That blew a few seconds. 4. They should have had signs to tell runners to stay on the right. I almost hit at least a few runners coming in the opposite direction. Remember, you are going up and down the same streets four TIMES! You have no idea who is on what lap after a while. I was stopped by a fellow runner at one point because she was confused what loop she was on. UGLY: 1. Medal: The medal is what makes some difficult marathons worth it. This medal was a default, store-bought, running-shoe medal with "Atlantic City Marathon" engraved on the back. No date. I can honestly say that this is the worst marathon medal I have ever received of the 35 marathons I have personally done. 2. Crowd control: As I neared the finish, I had to weave through the boardwalk crowds walking three or four abreast. There were no cones; it was a mess. I ran into a cyclist at one point. This is a serious injury waiting to happen. I can live with the bad points I referenced. But the UGLY points will cause me to stay away. I hope they address those areas.

Outstanding reorganization!

I have run this race about 10 times and had run another marathon a month ago when the original race was canceled. As a last-minute decision, I signed up for the race when the new organizers announced the rescheduled date. The course was the same, but the overall organization was much improved. It was a snap picking up the number, the gift package was the best ever, and the race went off without a hitch. The after-race refreshments were the best I've ever seen (I have run 59 marathons, including 10 Bostons and 14 NYC). Parking was easy and close by, and awards were given out immediately after the race - no long wait. I highly recommend the race. A couple of improvements for the future would be to add water in the first five miles, and awards at least three deep in age group categories. But overall ,a great experience! Thanks, JCC and Tropicana, for continuing the race!

Restroom facilities

The race is very beautiful; however, there were not enough restroom facilities along the course.

Not bad for a first-timer

This was my first full marathon and not a bad choice due to the flat course and small size. Running on the seafront and seeing the ocean views was great, but the stiff breeze was a challenge at times. My major complaint was the repetition of the course - parts of it you run multiple times, which gets a tad dull. Positives include very helpful and friendly volunteers, and encouraging fellow runners. Overall, I'm glad I ran AC, but I'm probably not going to rush back to do it again, partly due to the course and partly the high cost of staying overnight.

Disappointed and Misled

This was the 50th running of the AC Marathon, and by now you would think that the race organization would have everything down pat. I was disheartened by their misleading advertising for the event. Several things they promised never came about. They said that Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter would be there, but they weren't; they stated that there would be 50's-style band's at all of the water stops, but there wasn't a single one to be found (however, they did have 50's recorded music playing at the start/finish); they promised a FREE pasta dinner on Saturday, but not only wasn't it free, but there wasn't even a dinner to be had. They said the race would start promptly at 8:30 a.m., but we didn't get off till closer to 9:00. They had so many people making speeches that it was pathetic. The runners were getting a wee bit upset with it all. It was a wonder they didn't ask all the passers-by to add their two cents. It was not exactly a warm day to be waiting around for that long. After sending in the application way ahead of time, you would have thought that you had a good chance of getting the proper size shirt at check-in; but that was not to be, and the staff couldn't have cared less. All of the above could have been avoided if the organizers would have been more straightforward with applicants and checked on their resources before making such statements. This does not bode well for the race and its director. One item of note that they couldn't have foreseen was the major foul-up with the timing and results posting at the finish line. They couldn't give results or awards for the 5K, 10K, or 1/2, and it took hours to get results/awards for the marathon. Most everyone left. On the brighter side: the water stop personnel and the course marshals did a fantastic job and were very helpful and cheery. And the course was FLAT. Suggestions: Keep the 5-year age brackets. Instead of PowerBar chunks at the water stops (difficult to eat while running), try having something more liquid, i.e. power gels or GU. Also, change the course so that there aren't so many loops within loops. Maybe send it over to the boardwalk in Ocean City, and then turn around?

Enjoyable race

Nice event. Will certainly do this race again. The boardwalk makes for an interesting time, looking at the ocean, the buildings and the strollers. Of course it's windy; you're at the seashore. Plenty of water stations, mile markers and clocks. Friendly, helpful volunteers, and decent race organization.

One Day Wasted

I wasted a trip to Atlantic City on Saturday to pick up my race packet only to have to return Sunday morning early enough to pick up the chip. It is a three-hour drive from Baltimore. I guess I should have read the fine print. Once I started running, all of the negatives went away. When are the half marathon official times to be posted on the website? If not, why not?

I'd come back....

I like the format used by one last year, so I'll go with it: + scenery - weather conditions - emails sent months prior to coordinators went unanswered + friendly volunteers - would like to see more than water/power drink along the half + flat course, but you have to watch the boards - organizers really need to get more computer savvy; the photographer wasn't provided emails to send race pics, and the website was real out of date and not kept current - race bag needs some work; we look forward to the giveaways from the locals Overall, a good experience; however, I give them an NI (needs improvement). In comparison to other marathons I've run, this one can easily improve with a handful of changes. Hope they do it!

this was supposed to be the GOLDEN, but it was not

Not to have safety pins for the ribbons and the numbers was ridiculous, and what ever happened to the guest of honor who was supposed to be there? Chips were not working, so people were writing down the times. How bizarre, and for those who were running to qualify for the Boston Marathon, that was not very nice. It was very disappointing to say the least; I hope next year is little better.

A Beautiful Day

This was my first marathon and I really enjoyed it. The hotel/casinos are pricey, but you can't beat waking up and walking a few yards to the starting line - no hassles at all! I picked this marathon because I love running by the ocean, and the course runs along the ocean the entire way. The last five miles were directly into a strong headwind, which made it quite challenging to maintain my pace, but wind is part of the experience of beach running. The boardwalk is quite bouncy and easy on the legs. The event is pretty low-key - it has the feel of a small community race. I don't like big crowds, so the size was fine with me. The other runners were very friendly and supportive.

Well organized and nicely done

This year's A.C. Marathon was well organized and nicely done. The volunteers are very friendly and helpful. It was smart to move the start and finish farther down the boardwalk this year, to minimize pedestrian traffic. The setting is spectacular, even though the heavy headwinds had me spitting sand out of my mouth.

One of the worst half-marathons

2008 half marathon: Upon arrival at packet pickup on the morning of the race, there were 4 separate lines for bib pickup for each the 5K, 10K, 1/2 and full marathon, but no signs indicating which line was for what. Same for chip pickup. Baggage check required a payment of $1. Normally I don't carry money, but luckily I did for this run. Ran out of pins. The course was mainly on the boardwalk, and it's well manned and policed with timed mile markers at each mile. The course was a flat out-and-back to the north and then it goes out and back to the south, mostly on the boardwalk. After the race, runners were given a finisher's medal, water and a bag with only a banana and bagel. No other food was available. Disgusting!

the worst organization

Give yourself plenty of time to pick up your number. The lines for which of the various races they offer going off at the same time are not clearly marked. You spend a good 10 minutes looking for the right line to be in. I signed up for two races online. They only had a race number for me for one race. I had to wait another 30 minutes in the trouble line to get the other number. The water stops were few and far between. The volunteers, though few, were giving it their all. There was a headwind for the first few miles. And then, after mile 9 for the half marathoners, it was headwind all the way to finish. I didn't see a place to have my chip untied from my laces, so I guess I'll have to mail it in to them. Didn't see an area to get post-race refreshments. I didn't run the marathon because I didn't have time to get the chip for the race. It was in a different area from that for the race numbers. My boyfriend got the chip for my half-marathon and I had to wait to get a marathon number in order to get the chip. I was going to run both the half and the whole. The year I did it in the past, the half and full marathoners ran the same course. I was going to run through the chute to finish the half and then keep going to finish the whole. As I had to make a choice this year, I only had time to get the half-marathon chip. I didn't see any port-o-potties along the course. The only bathroom I saw was at the end of the table to collect your race numbers, and that area was mobbed. I had to wait until the area cleared to get to the bathroom. There was no expo and no place close to the convention hall to buy carbs before the race took off. I forgot my GU at home and was hoping there would be an expo or close convenience store to buy carbs. Be prepared and don't forget to potty before heading to the convention hall.

No gold for this 50th anniversary

For 50 years, the marathon has not been up to date. Website talks about the "sports and fitness expo, the latest developments in sports, fitness, and nutrition as well as featuring the latest running gear." "Expo" is a misnomer; it's only packet pick-up, with nary a sports, fitness, nutrition, running gear item in sight. Water stops about three miles apart. The website states that there would be PowerBars and bananas for the marathoners. Didn't happen, at least not for the back of the pack. No gels. Website states medics were on bikes; that's possible, as there were bikers out there. The only porta-john I saw was near mile 12, but I'm not sure if it was for the construction site there or actually for the marathon. T-shirt was cotton. At the finish line, a volunteer told me to "sit down, take the chip off, and put it in the bucket over there." Hotels were very expensive, and if you don't stay in one of those, you're paying an undue amount for a one- or two-star hotel. Boardwalk Hall parking the morning of the marathon was 5 dollars; later on when my husband tried to park the car to pick me up, the cost was 20 dollars. Bibs were color-coded for the different races, so I'm not sure what was the purpose of the "special [color] coded ribbon to be pinned to the back of your left shoulder." Volunteers at packet pick-up were not knowledgeable, and were always referring questions to someone else. Although it's a nice gesture to give the $1.00 fee for baggage check to charity, I'd prefer to give a donation on my own rather than have it superimposed on me in order to retrieve something of my own. Volunteers at aid stations were very nice. Running on the boardwalk was interesting; an earlier start would eliminate dodging tourists in the last mile. The Atlantic City Marathon does not reflect what should be 50 years of growth.

It's great running on the Boardwalk!

What a pleasant surprise! This marathon was very well done! It was windy, but you can't control the weather. However, I really enjoyed the views of the ocean! I loved the Boardwalk because it was so kind to my body! I also enjoyed seeing the entire Boardwalk during the marathon. There were turnarounds so you were always seeing other runners. The course was well marked, and traffic control was excellent. I would do this one again!

Good race; organization needs massive improvement

First, let me emphasize that from the minute the races started to the minute they ended, I have no problem at all with these races. My compliments to all of the aid station volunteers who hung in there for a long time. They are to be commended. The strong winds and blowing sand come with the territory, and are what they are for runners, but the volunteers were tough. Parking for $5 at the Trump garage was nice, and only a block or so away. I ran the full and my wife ran the half. Since we didn't get into Atlantic City until 8 p.m. the night before the race, we had to pick up our packets on race morning. It was the biggest cluster I've ever seen. Lines everywhere, and nobody knew which lines were which. No signs telling us what lines were what. A few signs telling us what line to get into would have helped immensely. After about 15 minutes, a bunch of us found out we were in the wrong line and had to start over. It was mass confusion for the whole hour we were milling around with everyone. About the time races should have started, the politicians began to be introduced, and I'm guessing we stood out there for at least 15 more minutes waiting the races to start. I'm all for the national anthem, God Bless America, and an invocation, but start them a bit before the race is to start! Standing around in the cold does nobody any good. Also, when we signed up for the race in AUGUST, my wife signed up for a medium shirt. The only size left for her was X-LARGE (she weighs about 120 pounds). Why do we say what size we want if it doesn't matter? I was asked what size I wanted, and was lucky they had my size left. The solution would be to put the shirts in bags with the bibs ahead of time. After the race, a plastic bag with one bagel, and one banana??? I don't think I'll be back for this one....

Disappointed this year

There were no age group awards this year. Last year I was thrilled to get an age group trophy in the 5K. I graduated to the 1/2 marathon this year, placed second in my age group, and there was no award presentation. I heard a number of complaints after the race. A trophy is no big deal, but according to the website and the program, there were supposed to be awards. It's really a goal to aim for, and the ceremony last year was fun. I did enjoy the race, even though it was pretty cold.

Treadmill running is more fun than this crap

Poorly organized. Boring. Get rid of the goofy guy with the Halloween suit at the start/finish line... and take the microphone away from him for heaven's sake! Before the race, I knew this was going to suck. I switched to the half marathon. But I soon wished that I had switched to the 10K or 5K. At least I got a stale tasteless bagel. The moron in the bread truck (hot drinks) poured three packets of hot chocolate mix into my tiny cup. Would you like some water with your chocolate mix??? Folks, avoid this one. It's the worst race I have ever been to. What a waste of time.

A good race and nice scenery too!

The 2008 Atlantic City Marathon was a much better event than some of the previous year's comments would suggest. You get a lot of marathon for the entry-fee: great scenery (the ocean!), great traffic control, the opportunity to see the other runners in both directions, a good start and finish area, committed volunteers, and it's fun (and forgiving on the body), to run on the boardwalk! As with any marathon, there are a few drawbacks (no fruit on the course, headwinds at times), but overall, it's a good event for a reasonable entry-fee. The marathon is more "no-frills" than it is "frills," but overall, it's a unique and rewarding marathon, and, definitely a much better event than some of the previous comments would have you believe.

Flat but monotonous

Much of the race was on the boardwalk, but they don't keep the boardwalk in good shape - not good for a distance race. I saw two people go down in the first few miles because the boards were not nailed/screwed down securely. Going north, the wind was awful. Going south at your back was nice. Water stations were only manned until the 4-hour mark and then abandoned with a few cups left out. If you're not a lead runner, as you finish, you'll be dodging the tourists the last 2 miles to get to the finish line. Staff was very friendly, and the pockets of spectators on the course were enthusiastic.

unimpressive

+ Opening 10 miles are nice - after that it gets a little repetititititive w/ 3 u turns + gatorade avail - gatorade diluted to water strength + late reg avail - late reg people will not be counted on the official list of finishers + casino is easy to find - casino hotel is expensive + bus terminal at casino is free to sleep at! - janitors will not let you sleep on the floor of the bus terminal, must sleep in a seat + free buffet post-race - no food avail immediately post-race + man in top hat at the end of the race - man in top hat will not help me get water, food, nor will he give me my medal until after I turn in my chip - this is this cheap. I understand the chips cost money, I understand they want the chips bk, but I've never seen the chip for medal swap at any other marathon and as practical as it is, it's feels cheap after I finished the marathon + nice run along the ocean - I dropped my ipod in the ocean + restrooms along the board - are locked! + this marathon didn't ruin my wkend, - it could've done better. I wouldn't recommend it.

Nice run but poorly organized

First of all you could not have asked for a more beautiful day. I felt it could of been more organized considering they have been doing this for 49 years. Packet pick up was just that. A lot confusion could of been avoided by putting the chips in our race bags rather than race morning. Spectators their was very few if any. The people on the boardwalk could of cared less and most had no idea what was going on. Could have been more water stations on the board walk considering you have to go out on it 3 times. Last three miles Should have been marked off so the runners did not have dodge all the people. No hype at finish line. After running for almost 5 hours I was greeted with ' sit down and take your chip off and I will give you your metal'. I guess I was looking for a little more help, and thought I deserved My metal as I crossed the finish line. Really did enjoy the board walk, too bad it can not start and end on the boardwalk.

Good small event

I knew going into this marathon it was going to be smaller and my expectations for organization were in line with what was a small, friendly event. I've read some other comments and I'm surprised to find the tone of some responses. Is it really a big deal to pick up your water from a table? I try to thank people every time I'm at a water stop - these events happen because of the support of those volunteers. We owe our thanks to them, not criticism. I also knew going into it that there'd be a good deal of looping on the course. The last six miles were especially difficult. On the plus side, water stations were convenient because the course passes by them more than once. Views of the ocean were great and again, because of the loops, my family was able to spot me on the course with some frequency.

Perfect setting - beautiful day

This was my first marathon and I enjoyed it very much. They do have some organization issues to deal with, but everything went well. You can't beat an all you can eat free buffet at the Showboat as the pre-race meal. The run along the boardwalk was beautiful. Not many spectators, but those who lined the course were friendly and encouraging. The volunteers at the water stations (there were plenty) were great. I enjoyed the course and it was very well marked (I saw every mile marker). They do need to do something about the last few miles to avoid collisions with strolling gamblers, but it wasn't that bad. The last few hundred yards were blocked perfectly. I would run the race again and hope they improve the few things that went wrong. I had a blast.

Not great for a 1st-time marathon

This was my first marathon and I wish it had been a better experience. I had read comments on this board regarding prior years, so I was somewhat prepared for the problems associated with this marathon (having to dodge people on the boardwalk, a lot of looping, lack of organization, lack of crowd support). However, there were some good points. The weather was awesome, the people (mostly the other runners) were very friendly and supportive, the ocean view was great and the free buffet at the Showboat Casino the night before was an unexpected bonus. I'd run another marathon again, but not this one. I wouldn't recommend this marathon to anyone unless they live in the area or they just want an excuse to go to Atlantic City.

I loved it

This was my first marathon and I thought it was great. The course was flat, and running on the boardwalk was cool. The road part was well marked, and there were plenty of water stations. I liked the loop backs because you could keep track of who was ahead of you and who was behind you. Although there were not a lot of spectators, many, many people clapped and said motivational things as I ran past. I do have to agree that at the end you did have to dodge tourists a bit, but by that time I was moving pretty slowly anyhow, so it wasn't much of an impact. Overall, I thought it was well organized. I picked up my packet and got my chip with no problem. I would definitely run this again.

This was my first marathon (but certainly not my first race). I finished in app. 4:22:10 and turned in my chip, but got left off the list. Beautiful day, nice flat course, breeze off the ocean, but crowded boardwalk at the end; I almost ran over some people strolling the boardwalk.

Great club race, not an 'EVENT'

The buffet the night before and the lovely weather were the highlights of the race. The club members had great pride in their race and were helpful. The problem is that this race is a secret from the city and the tourists. I agree that the course was a bit confusing (loop within a loop), and the last mile or two dodging tourists was horrible. Bag check, I talked to one of the organizers who said the charity group that was supposed to send three volunteers never showed up, what can you do... they did their best to remedy that. Nice cotton shirt I'll probably never wear, decent medal, easy registration(I drove in the day before and had no problem). In fact, that would be what I would suggest as I would imagine the weather could be a factor. I had a small knee issue that slowed me down, but still had fun.

Nice and unique venue, but poorly managed

Having read the other 2007 comments, I would agree with most opinions that are posted. I try to be very understanding of how difficult it is to successfully orchestrate all aspects of an event, and therefore refuse to be too "nit-picky," but this one has problems. The AC Marathon touts its long heritage and will celebrate its 50th year in 2008. One would assume that all the kinks would have been worked out by now, but sadly they have not. 1. This event attracts mostly local runners and I think I know why. All area motels, hotels, and casinos that have rooms for $50 to $90 during the week, TRIPLE that rate for Saturday night; unless the directors can get some of them to allow runners to pay weekday rates as a special "marathon rate," I suspect many would-be entrants coming in from out of state see those rates and decide it's just too expensive. Most of the runners from outside NJ that I spoke with (including two from Canada) were here because they were running doubles, having either run the Baltimore or Hartford Marathons on Saturday. 2. Starting at 8:30 is absolutely an hour to an hour and half too late. Why? Because by noon the boardwalk is full of people wandering around who are totally oblivious to the runners weaving and bobbing around and through them. We are a nuisance to them, not people they want to cheer on. 3. The post-race food consisted of bottled water and a clear baggy containing a plain bagel and banana. Boy, is that lame and to me it speaks volumes about the lack of support given this event by the massive casinos that line the boardwalk. 4. According to one local runner, the course changes from year to year. Why? I thought it was unusual, but not that bad. Contrary to that one runner's comments, the miles were spray-painted on the boards and posted with signs. Plus, according to my GPS, the markers were pretty accurately placed to boot. 5. If you are going to call it the Atlantic City Marathon, then do your best to promote, support, and cater to the marathoners and don't pretend that you aren't relying on the 5K, 10K, and half-marathoners to pad your numbers and sustain your event. Here is what I thought was amazing. Runners received a coupon with their packet to eat in the Showcase Casino's buffet restaurant. That is a $30 value and what a feast! What other marathon gives you a free pre-race dinner. Not even the Las Vegas Marathon offered that to runners. Secondly, running on a wood deck IS unique and easy on the feet, especially with the ocean views. Let me do it early enough in the morning so that only friends and family are there to cheer me on and I would LOVE it. OR, cordon off a lane and reserve it just for runners (monitored by volunteers and or police) and maybe the strollers would actually stop to watch us fools run past.

Beautiful Course; Underrated Marathon

This was a great race. I really do not understand some of the comments below. Most of the course was on the boardwalk, along the beach on a perfect cool, clear day, with a few miles along the million-dollar beach block homes in Margate and Ventnor. There even was a school of porpoises swimming in the vicinity of the Longport Pier. Frequent water and Gatorade stops with PowerBars at many, and friendly volunteers at all (OK, one was unmanned) of them. To boot, the pre-race pasta dinner turned out to be a free buffet at the House of Blues. My 15th marathon, and I had never had all-you-can-eat Alaskan King Crab legs at the pre-race meal. A PR day for me, a friendly and free kids race, and the race management could not have been nicer. This race was a last-minute add-on, as I had Chicago-like heat and water problems in a local distance run the previous week, that I had intended to use a training run for the Marine Corps Marathon. It turned out to be one of my favorites, competing with Shamrock Sportsfest for the top spot so far. The Boardwalk was clear at the humane starting time of 8:30 - it was a little congested at the end, but I never lost a step (a couple "passing on your right, sirs" kept me on my admittedly slow pace). 5* course, 5* organization. By my own introverted standards, I would make it a 5* fan support, too - a few people along the way stated words of encouragement, and I felt free to run my own race. A great family weekend, with the boardwalk, the beach, the pier shops and a great marathon.

Beautiful course with a disorganized finish

Although I have run in other races, this was my first marathon experience. The weather was perfect and the course was beautiful - right on the water. I thought the course was easy - very flat - and there were plenty of water/Gatorade stations. The volunteers and staff were very friendly and helpful. I was disappointed in the number of spectators/supporters and it was apparent not many people on the boardwalk were aware there was a race taking place. I was very disappointed with the final few miles of the course. There was not a clear path marked for the runners and we were forced to run around casual boardwalk strollers. There was such an abundance of police on motorcycles and bikes at the beginning of the race and this force could have been a great help at the end of the race when runners were forced to dodge casual boardwalk strollers and kids on bikes (to my knowledge bikes are not permitted on the boardwalk after 10 a.m. and this rule was not being enforced). This made it a difficult ending.

Beautiful course; could use better organization

This was my tenth marathon, but first in Atlantic City. First of all, the weather conditions were perfect. Fifties for the start, sixties for the end, not a cloud in the sky. The course was beautiful and I actually liked the switchback loops. There was plenty of water and PowerBars available. The problem was with the lack of organization. First of all, none of the volunteers seemed to know where the baggage check was. When we finally located it, there was one person trying to check everyone's stuff. There did not appear to be enough people to register all the participants causing a 15-minute delay in the start of the marathon. The biggest problem, though, was that none of the boardwalk was blocked off for the finish causing runners to have to dodge the casual strollers who were unaware of a race going on. You could not see the finish line until you were a few yards away making your whole finish anticlimactic. Overall, I enjoyed my experience but would consider coming back if I knew the conditions for the last few miles were much improved.

Looks good on paper, but horrible in execution!

I have run 5 different marathons. I rate this the worst-run race yet, and would never recommend it to another runner, especially a first-timer. The course route was confusing. There were very few true spectators or supporters on the route. I had constantly to dodge tourists for the last 3 miles of the course as these people had no idea who I was or what I was doing! On paper, this looks like it could be a great race venue. But the organizers blew it!

AWFUL

I will never in my life run this race again or recommend it to anyone. At the end of the race, you had to run through boardwalk crowds and yell, "Move." Throughout the course, spectators looked at you but didn't encourage you. Spectators looked at you like they didn't even know what was going on. Second of all, there was no sugar or food before the race for the runners or on the course for refreshment and a burst of sugar. When you did get to a water station, sometimes you had to pick up your own water. Third, no mile markers at all. I didn't even know what pace I was running at the beginning, which is crucial to us marathoners. Fourth, the lady handing out medals at the end wasn't even doing her job. There was no one to take the chips off your shoes, and you had to flag the lady down to ask for your medal. Anyway, a lot of improvement needs to be made before this becomes a recognized marathon.

The worst marathon I have ever run!

First of all, the website describes a trade show. There isn't one. Nothing. Nada. Race support???? Virtually none. Spectators? Fuggedaboutit. Listen, I'm a local. I live in Mays Landing, NJ and teach right here in Atlantic City. This event should be MUCH MORE than it is. This is a great location for a race. It's in A.C. ON THE OCEAN, for God's sake!!! There are plenty of people who have lived here for ages that don't even know there is a marathon in A.C. If the race organizers don't care to get the word out to the locals, why should anyone else care? By the way, I ran the 1/2 as a training run for Philadelphia. Thank God I didn't have to run another 13.1 miles. I was bored out of my mind from the 1/2!

AC not bad, but needs improvement

I ran the half and had a great race. The weather was great and the off-shore breeze was refreshing on the way back around the loop. The course is very flat, so it's pretty fast. My biggest complaint was that the water stations were unsure of the mileage. In fact, the whole race was not well marked. Other than that, it's a pretty small race.

Beautiful course; where is everybody?

It was a blast to visit Atlantic City and run along the streets from the Monopoly game! The best part was running the miles along the boardwalk, with the glittering ocean just yards away. The course is a little too convoluted, with switchbacks and extra loops. It would be a big improvement to extend the course at one end or the other to avoid the confusion. There was adequate support on the course, though one water station early on was unmanned. Almost no spectators were out, though it was a gorgeous fall day. Pretty much a no-frills race, but an organized, safe one that I'd recommend.

Nice Shore Run

I had a wonderful time at the AC Marathon. The setting was really nice, the weather was beautiful, and I really liked running on the boardwalk. I wish the miles were marked a little better, especially the last few. There is little crowd support, but the racers were all really friendly and very supportive. We cheered each other on at every turnaround. I would definitely do this marathon again.

I had a great time at this great race!

Although the marathon was not well-publicized (maybe not at all), there were incredibly small number of participants, and there was 35-mile-per-hour winds with gusts to 45, the people were friendly, nice cheering from the support crew, and very kind and enthusiatic volunteers! Yes, it was very windy, but perfect 55-65 degree temperature and the most gorgeous sun ever! They could not determine the weather. The course was nice and although I have often read 'flat and fast' about races, this one really IS!!! Other than going up and down the ramp between the boardwalk and the street (which is only about 10 PACES), it is truly, seriously, 100% flat as a pancake! There were 4 switchbacks which let me see the leaders a bunch of times, know how far I was from my friends, and be a bit of a spectator at the same time as I was a participant. So, I had a great time and suggest this race to everyone.... Even if I did get blown sideways into a parked car once or twice and ate some blown sand!

great for my first marathon

OK, so the course isn't that great (lots of turns, dodging around some people on the boardwalk and strikers). Organization could have been better in terms of getting the word out about this race. And spectators? Ha. Not unless you brought your family and friends. But I absolutely loved this marathon! It was nice to switch between two terrains so that your legs didn't get too tired from either the road or the boardwalk. There were a lot of other first-timers who were very kind and easy to run with. The weather was absolutely perfect. My boyfriend biked beside me for half the way and cheered me on. We spent the rest of the weekend in AC and had a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend this race to a first-timer. I had trained for months by myself, always with music, but when I ran this marathon I met some good people and didn't need the music at all. I had trained almost exclusively on hills and in the heat of the summer, which also made this race not so difficult since it was almost completely flat and the weather was cool. As long as you do your training and the weather holds (and you can psych yourself out for a strong headwind for 2-3 miles), this race should be a breeze.

Horrible first experience

This was my first marathon experience, and I will probably never run the A.C. Marathon again. I live in Palermo, NJ, so I like how convenient it was, however, I thought maybe the mayor could pull some strings and get the strikers off the boardwalk for a couple hours. Also, the course was not marked well at all. We were running around traffic, and the arrows were not clear! Sorry, but it was really bad!

The 'invisible' marathon

This marathon goes on in and around Atlantic City and no one who lives or visits there seems to know about it. I was actually asked: 'What's with the number?' However, I love this marathon and here is why: 1) Not too far from home for a quick day trip. 2) It's not crowded with runners so you have plenty of space to yourself the whole way. 3) It's flat. 4) At least half of it is very scenic. I know what the negatives are and there are ways to get around it: 1) Know in advance you might not get your award that you've won, know that you've won one or that your time was officially recorded. It's not a top race in terms of organization. You just run it for your own time keeping and nothing more. 2) No fans. Bring your spouse or a friend and have them ride along side you on a bike the whole way for food, water and support. I have done this 2 years in a row and it works out great. 3) Wind. Just hope that the wind blows north (at your back) for the last 5 miles - it usually is at the beach, but no guarantees. Did you expect there to not be wind at the beach? 4) People in the way on the boardwalk. Yell as you come up behind them. No different than running in a park (or other races where there were walkers in front). 5) Too many turns on the course. They seem to change the course every year. Maybe next time there won't be as many turns. Then again there might be more. 6) No clocks at every mile. Every mile is marked with a sandwich sign. so wear a watch. 7) Not enough water stops. See #2 above. 8) People skipping parts of the course. It could happen at any marathon. Rat them out when you finish and they will be disqualified. This marathon is not for first timers or people looking for the New York Marathon experience. This a great marathon to run that is low-key and if you are lucky with the weather you could really improve your time. This is one of the few marathons that have slot machines in the same room as the number pickup. Enjoy it.

Nice race in spite of itself

The brutal wind and rain at the start to 2003 was a gut check. The first half is full of twists and turns which break your rhythm. I guess this is the way the course must be so as to stay within the city limits. The second half is a solitary experience. Unless you plan to run with a buddy, be prepared to tough it out alone with very little fan support. The level course makes it ideal for a first-timer with little hill climbing experience.

A racer's marathon

I ran this five times. Liked course before they added all the turns. At the last turnaround it thins out so it's just you, the road and the person 200 yards ahead of you. Not a bad thing. Lots to do after the race.

Ran 1/2, pretty good race, not as bad as I feared

Ran here for first time. Only did the 1/2 marathon. Race was pretty good. Flat course, but bad weather conditions made it tougher. Hard rain and strong wind. After reading reviews here before I ran the race, was scared. But race was OK. Seems they might have been missing a couple of mile markers and there are not clocks at each marker. Also, water stops were infrequent. I only remember stops at mile 5 and 8, and maybe one more after that. Saw some people at the halfway point of the marathon, does not look like a good place to run one. No crowds, looked depressing watching some of the marathoners trudge on by. Online results still not available 2 days after race, and that's unacceptable.

Nice, small marathon

Prior to race day I had my doubts. The website did not provide that much information, and some of the previous comments were not that favorable. However, registration was easy and the people were very friendly throught the morning. Even with the terrible weather in the beginning everyone seemed cheerful, and one of the organizers correctly predicted the weather would clear. Having the other races start at the same time makes the 1st half of the marathon seem a lot bigger. By the second half I ran alone only seeing people at the turn-arounds. However, there were race volunteers and enough spectators to keep away the loneliness. THe turn arounds were not as bad as I thought. I actually like them because it broke some of the monotony of a long stretches, and it allowed the course to remain compact. The boardwalk is a great surface to run on, but I had to avoid the crashing waves splashing on the surface due to the storm. Also, It's nice not having any hills at the end of race, when the legs are sore. They could have one more water stop in each half. Before and after the race there is plenty to do. I had a fun 2 days.

Small, organized, but boring.

I live in NJ, so I selected this as my first marathon to run. I have also run the 1/2 marathon twice. I loved the stretch along the boardwalk, watching the sunlight glittering on the breakers. It was very relaxing to get into your rhythm. I found the northern section to be extremely confusing, and was so thankful for volunteers pointing you in the right direction. And it was so flat, flat, flat it was hard on the legs. I did very much like that the finish line was the same as the starting line, so you didn't have to lug stuff around with you. The part I disliked most was that there were NO spectators, except near the finish line. Can't they do a better PR job to encourage people to come out? I ran a race in Sea Isle City (just down the coast) and there were people, people, people almost every step of the way. Not only were there few spectators, but there were far too many pedestrians who would look at you, then step in front of you at about mile 25, when you didn't really need to be zig-zagging the course. Please, maybe a runners' lane?

Pretty lame

I didn’t expect much form this race and rightly so. The course has too many loops and cutting back on the same areas and it goes through some pretty shady areas. There are no spectators except at the halfway point where you go over the finish line for the half marathon, the 10 K and the 5 K and the eventual end of the marathon. On the boardwalk in Atlantic City there are some gamblers that are in the way. I think that they could set up a few cones on the boardwalk to make a path for the runners. Add a few clocks or at least volunteers at every mile to let you know your time. There was no Gatorade at the end of the race. And they gave out one of the ugliest T-shirts I have ever seen!! I realize this is a small race but for the amount of money they charge for it I expect a lot more.

Exellent Organization & Plenty of Refreshments

I saw all the bad comments on here prior to running the 43rd Annual Atlantic City Marathon, and I must admit that they scared me. I was expecting a disorganized and unfriendly racing environment. It couldn't have been further from the truth for this year. There were 100s of happy competitors, well stocked refreshment areas with encouraging volunteers, and better than expected traffic and crowd control. While about half the racers just ran the half marathon, there were still plenty of people running the second half of the marathon to keep you motivated and pushing yourself. I'd definitely recommend this race to anyone looking to experience some amazing scenery. What's great about this course is that it takes you through the entire urban landscape of Atlantic City. You not only get to experience the nostalgic Atlantic City Boardwalk with all the flashy casinos, but you also get to see another side of the city. The course takes you through areas in the city where urban planning and development our occuring as well as those of plight and underdevelopment. The most amazing part of this course overlooks the Atlantic Ocean where the race begins and ends. Rightly so...

Extremely fast course

This course is all at sea level with no grades, and about 10 of the 26 miles on boardwalk that is kind to your legs. Half of course has ocean breakers in view -- the rest is still entertaining and the boardwalk is scenic it its own right. Very small field makes for PR possibilities.

nice race, good scenery, below average ammenites

I see a lot of bashing this race in other comments. I like the race. You cannot, however, go into it expecting a race like NY or other big name races. I have run it 3 or 4 times and use it as a long run with friends. It would possibly not be good for a PR due to poor crowd support and running alone if you are toward the front. There is water every 1 to 2 miles and yes, it is true, there are not clocks every mile and some of the miles may be inaccurate. There are also several turns, but this adds to the character of the race. You get to see different parts of Atlantic City and surroundings. You run about 10-12 miles on the boardwalk which is very pleasant unless you are going into the wind, but if you are it is only for 5-6 miles since you run the boards north and south. The towns south of the boardwalk from about miles 16 to 22 are scenic and pleasant. The part north goes past condos and neighborhoods and is also pleasant. If you are dissappointed with the race, it is because you were expecting something different. Not every race has to be sensory overload like NY or Boston. Some races can just be run for the fun of running 26 miles.

Awful

There is NOT water at every mile, nor are there clocks at every mile. There are too many hair-pin turns around orange cones or poles, which break momentum. There is no crowd support. In fact, boardwalk gamblers are strolling aimlessly all over the course. The race organizers are only helpful on race day, prior to that day it is virtually impossible to get any reliable information.

would not recommend

small marathon with no community interest. almost no crowd support, in fact, we actually were heckled in some areas. from street punks with boom boxes to degenerate gamblers making smart remarks, you pretty much are on your own. field of about 200 is so spread out, you are alone most of the time.

Pleasantly surprised

I have run a couple dozen marathons and am going for the 50 states. I ran this race to get New Jersey, and because I didn't get into New York. I came to run with my running partner/sweetie. I didn't read the reviews until the week before the race. When I did, they scared me, but we had already paid for the plane tickets, hotel, registration, etc., so we ran it anyways. We are not particularly fast runners, and had not trained very well to boot. We ran a nice paced, relaxed race and took the time to look around. We thoroughly enjoyed this race. The organization was nothing special, but everything that was needed was available and there didn't seem to be any mishaps. There were plenty of water stops. The volunteers were helpful, friendly, kind. The race starts early in the morning, so the boardwalk is empty. That is really nice. You then head out into the residential part of town. There are so many turns, that I think the entire race is run within 5 miles of the start. You get to see the whole of downtown. When you finish, the boardwalk has filled with people who couldn't care less about the runners. They are more the eggs, bacon and a cigarette crowd. So you do a little dodging in the last mile or so. This could be seen as horrible, or unique, or challenging. I had fun with it. I would not recommend this race to a serious runner, or someone who is looking for a PR. But for a nice long run by the ocean, I would recommend it to everyone!! Plus, when you are done, you get to go to one of the many 'All you can eat buffets.'

was atlantic city marathon always this bad

I'm really suprised that this marathon was so bad. I've never run it but I believe this marathon has a long history and hasn't been this bad. Would like to see some comments who might have run this marathon in its better days. Was very suprised to see only 140 or so finishers. I know Atlantic City itself has had better days in the past, I think the same could probably be said about this race.

Flat and fast, overall enjoyable small marathon

The course was flat and fast. Not particularly great surroundings, but running on the Boardwalk was nice. Despite the difficulty in contacting the organization initially, they were well organized at the start, during and at the finish of the race. A lot of course volunteers, plenty of water & gatorade. Too bad there weren't more spectators. Needs to be publicized more locally.

Could be better.

This is such a beautiful area from Atlantic City to Linwood....it seems to me that in the city of Atlantic City alone race organizers could find so much more water, road helpers,( volunteers or paid)......put more time and money into it and you will get more out of it ! . It has the making of a beautiful experience. I ran three years in a row....has been progressively worse every year.....sad. I enjoy the closeness to my home but wouldn't travel far to participate.

Avoid this Marathon

I have run 40 marathons and ultras, and this has been the worst one. The start was disorganized, the support was inadequate, the course is uninteresting and pedestrians kept getting in my way as I ran on the Boardwalk. Check out the race Web page and you will see that it is terrible as well. No one should waste their time and money making a special trip to Atlantic City for this disappointing race. The T-shirt, however, is one of my favorites.

Dissappointing

I was unable to run the Chicago Marathon due to a conflict in my schedule and chose to run this one instead. Organization was awful. They couldn't give the results after the race due to a computer failure. I later found out I placed in my age group but was never contacted or given any type of award. I traveled from Tennessee to run this race, but would not do it again.

Not a very well attended race for obvious reasons.

Running on the Boardwalk was nice, but much of the course was looping back and forth along the streets of Atlantic City. Not very scenic. Hardly any spectators. Where was Donald Trump? He could have at least shaken my hand at the finish.

terrible

I ran this as my first marathon and would not suggest this to anyone. Not knowing that I actually won first place for my age category until the little post card came in the mail. I tried every way possible to contact the event organizers to claim my prize ( You know how important that is when it is your first marathon). After several unsuccesfull attemps of letters, emails, and voice mail message I gave up. Don't bother running. The course was even worse. No crowd support and you ran on the perimeter of a street and then the inside of the same street as part of the course. Not good at all.
